Dr Craig Stevens is a Professor and Chair of the Radiation Oncology Department at the William Beaumont University Hospital, part of the Corewell Health System in Royal Oak, USA.
As he explains, DynamicARC is key to the future of radiation therapy with protons, providing faster treatment and increasing by up to 30% the number of cancer patients treated on a proton therapy system.
Just like VMAT with X-rays, DynamicARC will probably become the dominant form of IMPT in the next years.
DynamicARC is also more robust and helps spare more healthy tissue around the tumor. It concentrates the most damaging protons, the high LET protons, right in the center of the tumor volume, avoiding high LET proton delivery to the edges of the tumor, close to healthy tissue.
DynamicARC allows radiotherapists to move to the next step in research and development.
Just like VMAT, the vast majority of patients will move to DynamicARC.
