What makes them shorten and lengthen?

how did you induce the waves? background: i'm a geology teacher and I woul d like to explain fossil wave ripples by producing then in the field.

Is that because of a standing wave?

yes the approximate pattern formed is because of standing wave, fixed volume of water & external air current.
