I had a flat tire on my PCX150 during my return trip from Missouri. So, I thought that I'd share my patch routine with you in case you don't already have a good emergency flat kit.
I picked up a nail in my rear tire while blasting down Beltway-8 at 70 MPH. I rode on the flat for nearly a mile until I realized what was happening. At first, I thought it was our infamous grooved pavement that was causing the bike to wander and wobble at 70+ MPH, but it quickly became apparent that I had more trouble pending.
I exited the highway just as the tire went completely flat and then I managed to pull into a Chic-fil-A at the nearest intersection. This was in the middle of the afternoon, so the parking lot was FULL and there wasn't any shade anywhere. Oh, goodie... it's time to SWEAT! 😰
I used my @Leatherman Wave Plus multi-tool to remove the nail from the tire. A big shout-out and thanks to @On the Rebel 11 for this great addition to my road kit! He gave this gift to me during the @LifeOfBurch meet-up ride in October 2021!
The @Dynaplug Carbon Ultralite plugged the nail hole quickly, and the CO2 inflator made quick work of getting the tire pumped up and ready for the road. I recommend using the larger 25g CO2 cartridges if you have the space in your emergency kit. These CO2 cartridge that I used today were the smaller 16g type, so I needed more than one to reach ~30 PSI. Cheers! 😉👍

As you recently demonstrated tubed tyres (can) suck and it was good to see your plug kit working in real life conditions It was a concern of mine that the CT125 had spoked and tubed wheels so a month ago I converted mine to tubeless using the low cost and quick “ghetto” technique. It is widely used in SE Asia and in the MTB world and four weeks and several hundred miles on I can report that there has been no leakage of air what so ever from my wheels There are many You Tube videos but here is a synopsis:- Find yourself a couple of tubes 2” smaller than the oem ones and cut around their greater circumference - put the tube back on the rim with it now splayed out like a kipper then refit the tyre on top of it. You now have a tyre with the old tube forming an airtight lower part and covering the spoke ends while the tyre’s bead presses against the rim with the tube trapped between the two. Just trim off the excess part of the tube that sticks out and you cannot tell that it is anything but the oem tyre Concerned that the tubed tyre might be air porous I fitted Continental road tyres but a CT 125 owner in the States reports no air loss so far from the original tyres and we can see no reason why this would not work with 50/50 or off road ones

I've put Ride-on tire sealant in my last Seven Motorcycle's and Scooter's never had a flat,But watching this video make me think about Why I should carry a tire repair kit full time even on my shorter trips .I live ten miles from town so now I'm carrying a kit full time even though I have Ride-on in my 2022 Pcx tires. I will HAVE to SAY that I really appreciate your Channel.

Hey there Quasi, glad that your safe and that you had the presence of mind to recognize the tire issue before it really got out of hand. EXPERIENCE PAYS Be safe and thanks for recording the repair, it's going really help other beginning riders that although dangerous to have a flat while riding, it can be remedied rather quickly and safely. Be safe and stay hydrated!

Eight miles from home?!? Oh, you poor sap. I had to get a second cold 🍺 while watching you fix that flat. I don’t carry CO2 but a teenie tiny tender-powered pump, and I use the same plug kit and a Leatherman. I’ll bet that cold shower felt good when you got home. You probably took a chilled six pack into the shower with you. 🤣 Edit: I got my Pitbull rack. Perfect fit for the Rebel 1100. That’s for the heads up on that!

Never tried dynaplugs. That was a fast repair. Guess I'm a rope plug guy. Never had issues with them and never replaced the tire as "they" recommend after a puncture but rode it to the end of it's life. I am tempted though to get a few of those CO2 cartridges. Glad it was a tamed tire issue and that you made it home safe. 👍

Dose dyna plugs are great I have a grom that plug twice and never have had air leak out I did use the other tip to clean the rubber so it could seat properly and at the end cut it flush to the tire and know I bought one of does small handheld cordless air pump the are made for small car/motorcycle and bikes but that co2 system also looks small and more light weight.

A key point is to not ride too far is the tire goes fully flat as the tire could break loose from the bead. If that happens reinflaing gets quite a bit harder. If you can afford it a tire monitoring kit will alert to a leak well before you start to feel the bike squirming around or getting hard to steer. So the sooner you recognize the leak the better.
@sunrisejak2709
@sunrisejak2709 7 ай бұрын
Oh I forgot the plug is a bit easier to insert if the tire has some air in it. So if you remove the nail and you have some pressure it's good to quickly be prepared to put the applicator on or lightly replace the nail a wee bit until you're ready to insert the plug.

In mountain and road biking we would hook the adapter/trigger to the valve stem and then attach the CO2 cartridge to the trigger then open as it screws in any leak should go into the tire.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
Great tip! I usually don't have any problem with these inflators not sealing the CO2, but the O-ring scooted sideways in the neck this time. I figured it out later when I removed that cartridge. I have already upgraded this road kit with larger 25g CO2 cartridges and a fresh O-ring. Hopefully the next time I use it, I'll be able to tackle it with only one cartridge! 😉👍 --QM

I didn’t know about this method! Wow thanks. I have had many nail/screw flats over the years. I carry the co2 cylinders and the eye of the needle and gummy rope set which works well, but not as quick and easy as what you demonstrated in this video. I have already looked on Amazon and most say it’s for bicycles. Is there a difference?
@QuasiMotard

Definitely get the DynaPlug Carbon version for motorcycles. The bicycle version uses much shorter plugs that aren't suitable for most motorcycle tires. 😉👍 --QM

Fine job! Do you run awhile on a patched tire? Or do you get a new tube
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I usually don't ride on patched tires any longer than necessary to make it back to home base. If the tire is still has lots of tread life remaining (like this one does), then I'll pull it off of the wheel and patch it properly from the inside with a vulcanized rubber patch. Motorcycles only have two wheels to keep me upright, so I don't like to take chances on patches that could come loose and leave me stranded (or worse). Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Hi Quasi, I have a question about the windscreens you have on both sides of the scooter for leg protection. How did you install them to your scooter? I want them too on my pcx because my knees are sometimes cold
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 3 ай бұрын
Those leg shields are the Daytona Side Visors from Webike Japan: japan.webike.net/products/22641463.html (check the fitment years for that link). Those are for the older 2015 body style, but Webike also has fitments for the newer body style. The visors attach with super strong 3M VHB double-sided tape and 3-4 optional screws into the plastic fairing. I cleaned the fairing panels with rubbing alcohol, fixed the visors in place with the VHB tape, and then pre-drilled the screw holes with a 3/32" drill bit (to avoid plastic splits). The visors transformed the airflow around my knees, making the center tunnel area almost turbulence-free. Wind and rain are directed out past my knees, so they help in both cold and wet weather. The PCX runs cool, so I didn't notice any new discomfort riding in hot weather. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I have had tires with 3 plugs in them and ridden 5 months longer with 3 plugs and never leaked a bit. They work if you do it right. Not recommended for riding long term with plugs but you can if you want😂 You're supposed to clip off the excess after sealing the tire though.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
I've tried it both ways... leaving the excess or snipping it off. I've had the plug recede a bit and leak a few times when it was snipped too close to the tire. I generally won't ride any farther than necessary on a plugged tire just for safety's sake. If I decide to keep this tire, then I'll pull it off of the rim and repair it properly from the inside with a vulcanized patch. This Michelin City Pro still has a bunch of tread left after 4K miles, so I might put it back into service just to see how long it lasts! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

What is the best psi for those pcx scooters ?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
I usually run my PCX tire pressures near the manufacturer's recommended maximum of 29/36 (front/rear). My typical highway pressures are 32/36 for lower rolling resistance and less tire heat, and that firms-up the front end a little bit for a less "squishy" feel. You may need to tune the pressures according to your altitude and riding weight for best performance. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Where did you get that kit ?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
I made it! You can find all of the product links in the video description. This kit works well for scooters because it's small and takes up very little space under the seat. I made identical kits for several of my other motorcycles, and I just leave them under the seat for emergencies. All of the components last almost indefinitely and don't need replaced/refreshed unless you use them. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

How did you hit 70 on the adv ??
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
This was on my 2015 Honda PCX150. I have a Dr.Pulley performance variator and sliders in this scooter, so it routinely hits 68-71 MPH on flat ground, and up to 74-76 MPH when running in fast traffic (disturbed airflow). Those speeds are GPS-verified, but the speedo is pretty close... within 1-2 MPH indicated speeds. 😉👍 --QM
@FranklinHicks-qs4gs
@FranklinHicks-qs4gs Жыл бұрын
@@QuasiMotard very nice !!! What was the speed before the variator/sliders? On my adv I've hit 65 flat out. But I'd just like to maintain 55 with ease.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
The PCX would always bounce off of the factory rev-limiter between 62-64 MPH. I installed 14-gram Dr.Pulley sliders into the OEM variator, and that bumped the top speed to 67-68 MPH before hitting the rev-limiter. A few months later, I installed the Dr.Pulley performance variator with 13-gram sliders, and that pushed the top speed to a drag-limited 71-72 MPH on flat ground... no rev-limiter interference. It will occasionally hit the rev-limiter at 78-79 MPH downhill, but that's only in very rare circumstances because it doesn't have the power to get there without some help. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
