Here it is, My comparison episode - Dynaudio Confidence 20 VS Dynaudio Heritage Special ep2 !
I know it's long, and for most it'll likely be boring as I go into quite specific detail, however, if there's ten grand to be spent on speaker and you want a little insight, an hour isn't much in the scheme of things.
Over the next few weeks, I'll be listening closely to the pair for episode 3 then I'll drop you my thoughts and see what you think.

One doesn't see or hear such in depth reviews/comparisons one audio gear ANYWHERE . . . VERY much appreciated . . . I broke the bank for the Heritage speakers - worth every penny . . . great great sound . . . the best speakers I've ever owned . . . I really like the comparisons you make here . . . I think that if I had the SPACE to let the C20's properly BREATHE PLUS a HUGE budget for upstream gear I'd opt for the C20's but the Heritage is SUCH a delight that I won't be dreaming about the C20 and wishing upon a star. THANK YOU ! REALLY enjoyed the time spent with you!!

Thanks for the comparison. Excellent insight into the Dynaudio lineup and sound quality. For me the form follows function aspect and technology developed for the Confidence line along with the modern aesthetic, has me liking the styling over the Specials. I have had speakers in the past that are similar in appearance to the Specials, and I like different now. Can't wait for part 3! Cheers

Fantastic stuff! I'm keen to experience now both Heritage Special and C20 (and actually C30, too). These two are the backbone of my end-of-life upgrade, I'm one upgrade away from it. Started HiFi when I was late teens, and in the last 23 years I've had B&W 602S, and moved to Dynaudio Contour 1.1. Then there was a break, and after not being able to enjoy true audio for almost a decade due to work/travel, I bought Emit 10, and moved two years later to Special Forties + Stand 20, driving them with a Denon 2500NE, and accompanied them with Denon 800DCD-player. Had a horrible room for the first three years for the Special Forties, but had them in a new apartment for a month now, and they came truly alive. Created a listening room using all sorts of bass traps and sound dampening panels first time ever, and started thinking of an upgrade. That brought me to your videos, and gave me a lot to think about, in a good way!

Awesome review. Very informative for anyone who has the good fortune of being familiar with either the HS or the C20. I had the HS riding on the back of a 35k US front end and felt that they not had reached their zenith. Now I am dangerously curious about the C20. Whatever the future may bring, the HS stay - Special they are! Thanks again for your detailed comparison.

26:44 Yes, if the soundstage gets conjested with other speakers in comparison to the CF20, then that signals that the high freq, pzieoelectrically cant be played out accurately through the midrange to 20khz etc> those high freqs can get pulled into the midband midbass, if theres to much inductance or wehatever could cause the soundstage the conjest etc. or could be a crossover issue etc

I have a pair of C20’s that I got for a similar price to the Heritage. Love them. One of the key advantages of the C20 that some may overlook is that they have a downward firing port that works really we in small rooms, worked better than many other rear ported speakers in my small room. A few years ago I heart the S40 in this same room and it was a struggle to manage the bass, I would imagine the heritage might be the same with its large rear port. I agree about adjusting, the C20 is a lot to take in, but now I absolutely love them! And I know there is more to come once I upgrade my equipment….
@MadViking82
@MadViking82 6 ай бұрын
This is why I'm considering C20 over the Special Heritage as I'm upgrading from the Special 40. I have difficulties in small rooms managing the bass, and for them to sound "Dynaudio" speakers, I need to put the full form foams in the back port. That gives the highs and mids more focus and bass is less boomy. However, I do feel they lose something with the foams in the rear ports, they lose the openess. Therefore, the only "real" way to manage the Special 40s is to use the foams but only the ring part of the foam at most to keep them open, and then try and find a way to have them at least 40cm from both walls. The problem with my rooms is that in my listening position there is a wall behind me immediately, so the reflections behind me are massive, despite sound panels and what not. So that is why the C20 with the downward firing port would save me a lot of pain, but I'm still thinking...

I had the C20 for over a year and by chance, got a pair of HS for audition from a friend. Just to note; I drove both set up with Gryphon Diablo 120 integrated amplifier and I must add that the Diablo + HS match was more synergetic. From the very first moment I heard the sound of HS, without question, I decided to keep them. HS are truly amazing performers and different than the c20s in many ways. Obviously, it all comes down to the personal taste but to start off I should say the HS is more open sounding than the c20. I am sure there will be many lovers of the dark sounding c20s but the excitement and fun factor is more dominant with the HS. The details are literally flying above your head and in the room. On the contrary, the c20s do sound bigger and have a tad more body but the realism and musicality of the HS are just mind blowing. There is significantly far more information in music with the HS without never being analytic in any way! With bass, HS delivers more texture and just enough weight to justify the swap with the c20s. However, I find c20s to be better all-rounders as HS is a bit picky with poor recordings and personally don't find the HS playing that well especially with Rock music! At first, I had serious doubts wether this would be an upgrade or a downgrade but the sound of HS have cleared the air. As Carl puts, C20s might the better speaker overall but perhaps not the type of speakers that best appeals to my taste.Personally, the musicality, amazingly disappearing character and the beautiful mid range energy made the HS speakers a no brainer for me.

Your take on the HS is well expressed and I not only share your opinion but I actually have a pair too :-) As I wrote to Carl, at 53:15 in his video he pretty well nails the difference between the HS and the C20 . . . the HS zeros in on the "feeling" in the music and may make your mind and body want to dance whereas the C20 presents the musical event and more or less dissects it as if it is happening in front of you . . . that's also loads of fun :-) So in a nutshell, one , (the HS) touches the heart while the other (the C20) is more "cerebral" if you will. BOTH have their place in the sound reproduction hierarchy and the choice (a difficult one I must admit :-) is, really, a matter of taste . . . soul vs head :-) Of course cost and appearance can play into the equation but having said that, I'm not a huge fan of the look of the C20 although I do appreciate the reasoning behind its design. On the other hand , for some, the HS may be a bit TOO retro looking albeit once heard, all reservations in that regard will probably dissolve on first listen LOL 🙂 Happy listening to your HS!

If you support the HS with a nice sub you pass the Confidence left and right. For me the only advantage the Confidence has is a big bigger bass output. The HS needs a good sub that rolls off from 50 Hz. This makes all the difference. Without a sub the HS isn’t as magical as it could be with a bit of help from a subwoofer. I like the first order crossover in the HS, with the high quality drivers from Dynaudio it’s was always the way to go. The Confidence uses a second order crossover, and you can hear that. It’s a matter of what you like in speaker sound, but it definitely characterizes the HS with the pure and clean sounding vintage looking masterpiece design.

@@StudioincarI’ve listened a lot of hours now, HS with the Hegel H390 and my conclusion is that the tweeter output is a bit too high. This is fatiguing and certainly not good. It gives voices (John Mayer for example) an unnatural color that’s not how it’s supposed to be. It’s discussed in a lot of forums nowadays, some want to change the crossover to tame the Esotar3 a bit. I guess Dynaudio should update the crossover for those who want to correct the tonal balance a bit. Now I am using the WIIM pro plus equalizer to correct the flaws.

Same here Michael - Carl pretty well nails the difference between the two speakers at 53:15 - the HS pretty well goes for the "soul" of the MUSIC and makes the head and heart want to dance whereas the C20 presents the event of the recording in front of you and more or less "dissects" the music making - the choice really comes down to a matter of taste and what you are wanting a speaker to do (and for some, like me, the wallet :-) Cheers!

@davidbee8178
@davidbee8178 5 ай бұрын
@@Freedom89984 Mmmm that IS too bad . . . VERY surprising that you feel the bass is "timid" due to your H390 which, if I'm not mistaken is 250WPC 8ohms and 420WPC into 4 . . . I have an amp (not Hegel) that is rated 180/8 and 360/4ohms and I'm getting truly stunning bass from my HS's which, as you know, bass is rated at 42Hz@ -3DB . . . If I may suggest . . . before shopping for an alternate amp, get your excellent H390 checked out for performance to see if it's operating at or near rated power and if it is, THEN test drive a higher rated HEGEL to see if you are happier. Mind you, our HS's are not particularly fussy about placement BUT if you haven't got GOOD stands (Dynaudio best) or isolation footers (like isoAcoustic Gaia or Aperta) for them, you might be missing out on some of their great potential . . . best of luck and whatever you do, don't give up on the HS's !! FYI, to "fill in" the lower octaves I went for a REL S/510 and it is a FINE complement for the HS's - it augmented the already beautiful midrange and even the highs in terms of "presence" - I'd get TWO S/510 but the single one already kind of broke my wallet in two LOL - IF you have the wherewithal, get TWO No.31 or 32 RELs for truly outstanding room filling sound even with your Heritage Specials which are THAT good :-) If your HEGEL IS performing at it's best,, then I'd suggest you TEST DRIVE a REL S/510 (as a minimum - don't go lower in their T range) before trying a different or more powerful amp. IMHO, the REL will probably do more for your sound than a more powerful amplifier will, especially a good one like the one you have. Cheers and happy listening !
@davidbee8178

@@Freedom89984 Mmmm that is too bad . . . your HEGEL ought to be sufficient to drive your HS's to their potential. My amp (not a HEGEL) is rated at 180WPC into 8 and 360 into 4 ohms and drives my HS's really VERY well. Don't ditch your H390 just yet ! By all accounts it's a great amp . . . 250 WPC into 8 and 420 into 4, right? May I suggest that you get it tested to see if it's behaving well at rated power - if it is and you are still not happy then maybe test ON TRIAL :-) a more powerful HEGEL? Mind you, our HS's are not too fussy about placement but they DO benefit from good stands (Dynaudio's highly recommended ) or on isolation feet from isoACOUSTICS (their GAIA footers or Apertas are really great) . FYI I filled in the lower octave with a REL S/510 . . . as you probably know a REL not only does bass but also "fills in" the mids and gives them and the highs more "presence" and indeed, the S/510 does so in spades. If you opt to give a REL a try, you might find that it does more for your bass than a more powerful amp might do. If the idea of a REL does appeal to you, and you have the wherewithal to buy TWO, even better! :-) I wish I had TWO S/510 's but the one I just bought broke the wallet in half for the meantime:-) I suggest that you go for - at minimum - one of the S serie subs. OR even better yet, two No.31 or 32's ! - If I could afford two of those beasts I'd go for them in a heartbeat LOL The GOOD news is that our Heritage Special speakers are THAT good (in the sense that two of REL's most expensive subs would be a terrific match) All the best in finding a solution . . . BTW, our HS's are good to go down to 42Hz - 3dB so although the bass is stupendous for their size, let's face it, no matter what amp we throw at them, they won't be going into the 20's anytime soon LOL Happy listening and cheers from Montreal!

Hi Rick, I did record segments of it over Christmas 20/21 but I never finished the video. Reasons are the confidence 20 was significantly different (better, imho) in a domestic environment but the amplifier I had on load over that period (valve amp) that we were looking to bring on board just didn't sound very good so it affected the overall judgement of the speaker and its comparison to HS, therefore I felt I shouldn't really comment on the topic any further as that amplifier had marred the results. That probably sounds like a strange reason but add in the fact the C20 had to be returned shortly after I just didn't get the time to bring in a more familiar amplifier. I hope that explains a little. Ultimately, it was a time thing.

It might be instructive to know what Model Dynaudio brought to Munich High End in 2019 to introduce the new Confidence line. Was it the C30? Obviously the 60 will do bass lower than the 30 . . . but is the 30 or 50 the sweet one in terms of vocals and musicality and grabbing your heart like the Heritage Special did? Just wondering what YOUR choice would be money no object. Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year!

I disagree with topping out with any speaker in regards to amplification. Better source and amplification will always improve a speaker, even a very modest speaker. The Heritage Special just like any other speaker will sound better with better gear. Also a Hegel amp is not the best for Dynaudio Heritage special imo. It just doesn't have the drive these speakers need. This is after audition compared to a Naim seperates setup.

Great review, thanks a lot! Me and my wife made the decision between the two 5 months ago, coming from a Dynaudio C1 that we wanted to replace after 14 years of great music. After an intense listening session at the dealer we decided for the C20, because we found ourselves completely lost in the music with them. They have such a consistent sound while still being incredibly detailed and make music sound just like... music. The HS is a fantastic in its own right and as you say, the C20 builds on the HS strengths and further expands their abilities. With the downfire bass, placement is easier than with the backfiring HS. And the C20 sounds incredibly big for a standmount.

My living room is about 4m x 5.5m as well. Today I have Evoke 50. Which are quite alot larger cabinets. But having a standmount instead and of higher quality instead is something I consider. My hifi plays from the wide wall, so the distance from baffle to listening position is about 3 meters or slightly less.

INTERESTING Carl! ! At about minute 53:15 you pretty well zero in on the ESSENTIAL difference between the C 20 and the Heritage Special . . . with the H S you're experiencing or being touched by the MUSIC whereas with the C20 you're listening to or experiencing the SOUND and how it's made, the "dissecting" of the musical event if you will, as it is happening before you. Noting wrong with that if that's what one gets a kick out of :-) However, if one's priority is how the MUSIC makes one's mind or body "want to sing or dance" then it seems to me that the choice quite easily falls into the Heritage Special camp.At least that's what I'm reading into your prresentaiton here. GREAT episode, Carl . . . All the best with greetings from Canada . . . I only bring Canada up because if you were just a LITTLE closer, I'd be dropping into your shop QUITE often! P.S. I own the H S's and I share your feeling about them to a fare thee well ! :-)

Very nice review, I agree fully. Owning the Cf20 driven by Naim. The fun-factor you are talking about is what I am missing even since I have the Cf20. This foot-tapping element has gone in the much more matured Cf20 and I will believe that HS is s.th. like a big SP40. The Cf20 is analog a big Contour 20 which also resolves superb but yet with less fun than a SP40 does. I am looking forward what Dynaudio will do in the net generations with them. They were and they are great speakers - butteryness is not a common expression? ;-)

Hi Sascha. I've had the SP40 and upgraded to Heritage. And i'm just in love with my Heritage. The musical perfomance regarding "warm sound and foot-tapping" is like the SP40 but even more refined and even more fun listening.

What do you think about the 20's with some good powerful valve amplification. Would it mellow them a little....sounding a little less etched or hyper detailed perhaps? Even on some well recorded KZbin vids of the Confidence 20's they sound amazing kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZSqhqyNpdabgJI

Wow, i totally lost track of time listening to you (my spelling and gramma is a little of, sorry). I really like the way you present your self and your opinions. 4 month ago i bought the Heritage (with standmount20 - and filled it up 3/4 with sand), together with Yamaha AS2200. I had considered the Hegel h390, but that beast was way out of my pricerange. I also bought Lindemann Bridge and Chord Qutest. My interconnect is Chord Clearway and Chord Shawline. Speakercables are Chord Epic. All in all I went and spend a lot more than I first had in mind ;0) Now... I have not heard C20. Simply because i wanted a more "warm" sounding speaker, and at speaker that wasn't so detalied as you describe the C20 to be. My concern right now is.... is my Yamaha AS2200 adequate? There offcourse is a note to this question. I just adore the warm and realistic sound comming from my Yamaha (i had Yamaha AS11100 in my previously set-up together with DynSpecial 40). It's hard when to know to stop.... Ohh... regarding positioning. I found it a little difficult. I live in a flat consisting a lot of concrete and big glas facades. But i think i got it now :)

Hi. I have the Yamaha a-s1200 with the sp40. I consider to upgrade to the heritage. Do you think the a-s1200 will do the job with the heritage? Im not sure. The sp40 are ok with the a-s1200 but I think there is no spare power currently and the heritage are less efficient than the sp40.

@@igaldins I can highly recommend yamaha A-S2200 together with Dynaudio Special Heritage. I made the shift from Yamaha A-S1100 and Dynaudio Special 40. WOW. Mutch more control in the soundspectre overall - and the 2200 is quite muscular in abundance. The Heritage are demanding and needs a ferm hand from an amplifier, that consist of som extra muscles.

@@Studioincar It is indeed a lovely sound. Hmm... now I'm curious. Regarding the fact that I'm hooked on Yamaha amp soundscape. Is there another amp you think to be superior. Of course, it has to be less expensive than an aeroplane.

I can hear an air conditioner. Great review. Avoiding the over-used cliche descriptors. Thanks. My experience is if you have a lot of cheap poorly recorded music on any format, don't buy these kinds of speakers. They won 't do your music (which you have cherished forever) any favours at all. People (I made this mistake too) often buy more expensive speakers thinking it's gonna make their music sound better and better. It's a huge disappointment when it turns out to be the opposite. I have a small but well loved mid 80's collection of pop rock big hair bands on vinyl amongst other thinks. Think Def Leppard, Whitesnake etc. It sounded great on my 80's entry level gear, but as my budget grew and the gear got upgraded the recordings became almost unbearable to listen to! All I could hear were the recordings deficiencies. Sounds like, if you want to rock out to your music with some 'air guitar' buy the HS. But if you're sitting back listening to Herbie, Miles, Chick or John Coltrane with a nice whiskey on ice, get the 20's!

I have to say in terms of looks, no matter how good the Heritage Special sounds, I just can't buy it. I am into modern looks through and through. The Heritage Special reminds me of speakers like Harbeth, Rodgers, Spendor and the likes which I will never touch. But, that's just me. I will happily buy just about any other Dynaudio speakers, with the sole exception of the Heritage Special.
