I think one advantage of the KEF over the Special 40 is that they are more forgiving in terms of height of your listening position. IIRC the Special 40 have an extraordinarily deep suckout when your seat/stands have the wrong height and you end up slightly below the tweeter. But since I haven't heard the S 40 I can't comment on how much this might effect the perceived sound. (After all Sonus Faber says they create such a suckout on purpose to balance out the frequencies as in their crossover region the human hearing is most sensitive.)
@TheAudiofool4 жыл бұрын
I experimented with the height positions (tweeter center) a little above ear, at ear, and below ear, and they didn't seem to be affected, but may depend on by how low you mean. But the KEFs definitely have an advantage in terms of more consistent sound/image as you move from the listening position.

Thanks! Gloss finish is hard to do, and it definitely adds to the cost, and enclosures are usually the most expensive part of a speaker. But my main complaint is that my glossy grey birch was 3000, and now, they phased that veneer out and the new black vine/ebony waves are 3500. So, maybe just grab the birch veneer before it runs out of stock.

Love it. The S40s get trashed on ASR but blew me away in a demo on stands in a treated room. I could definitely hear the cabinet resonance at loud volume but the tweeter and bass extension and slam are just amazing for a 2-way bookshelf. Such a shocking performer. For comparison, $10K Revels floors floorstanders I heard right after left me cold with their excessively clinical high end. Contour 60i, as well. If my room was smaller I would probably pick up a pair and just run room correction and boost the mids a little.

Hey! what a fantastic review! i subscribed to your channel as your speaker comparisons are second to none; to the point. this particular review is fascinating as i have always been attracted to the ATC sound but there are not many reviews, objective reviews out there of the ATC 11. your comparison between these 2 "champs" is intriguing, to say the least! i will be able to stretch my budget just short of $2000US for a new pair of speakers... i could almost buy the ATC 11...but not quite yet. I was able to listen to the the Special 40s through Crutchfield's "listen and compare" website (which is a pretty cool idea!) and found their sound superb! maybe you can point me out in the right direction towards a nice pair of speakers around $1800US... for classical and jazz. anyway, keep up the GREAT work, your really thoughtful reviews.... one thing (if you allow me to) i don't like about your reviews, is the "what you hate" part... i can understand there are things you would hate in a pair of speakers, an amp, etc... but sometimes i feel you force this section too much. sometimes there is really nothing to "hate" about a particular product. perhaps just with the "what you don't like" would be enough. anyway, it's just a constructive comment as i love your work and wish you the best of lucks. in fact i can't understand why don't you have a ton of subscribers yet. i have pointed out your channel to several musician friends who happen to love Hi Fi, like myself! we all love your reviews. all the best to you! thanks!
@TheAudiofool4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. I was actually going to remove the hate part, because most people just focus on the hate and automatically think it's a negative review which is not usually the case, and it's besides such a taboo word nowadays. But I really hated the price increase hehe. Will do so in the future. It's hard to make a recommendation... without knowing your sound preference and what your amp is and if you like it. If you liked the S40, maybe the Evoke 10, or revel m105/6, as they have a neutral disposition. If you like it with a bit more sparkle or better imaging off axis, try the KEF R3s. For something warmer, the Wharfedale Lintons or the Tekton Perfect SET are good options. If you're okay with used, you have a lot more options and you can follow my recommended prices.

@@TheAudiofool hey! thanks for the reply. I currently have an iota VXSA3 and an Iota VXPA3 paired together. I absolutely love the sound i'm getting! @vladimirrusev4684 жыл бұрын
bass in Special 40 is indeed more and deep ... but nothing special from quality point. ATC and LS50 don't go so deep but have much more refined bass, with more texture. Hights on S40 are a little bit love and hate thing. I have to love them at the beginning (one of the reason to bye them) but after a year or so come to conclusion that this is just unrealistic too much of a details. Yes, it sounds airy, sapcy and very interesting but this is not realistic. Good for electronic and synth music but not so for jazz and acoustic staff. Now listening to the bigger ATC SCM 40 i am even more convinced about this. ATCs in general are extremely realistic sounding speakers. Yes ... for some kind of music even boring, but for other kind you really see the instruments in front of you.
@TheAudiofool4 жыл бұрын
Definitely like the imaging and soundstage better, but I"ve been discussing this with a Dynaudio lover friend of mine, and he found it the other way around, that he liked the flat soundstage because it was more "accurate" because we are listening to a recording. Well couldn't really say something about that, except that we all have our own things.

Do the ATC SCM 11's allow you to play at softer volumes 70-85dB despite the higher power requirements? I heard they can't nearly as well vs the Special 40's. I want to pair it with a Parasound JC5 which uses 12 watts of class A before A/B. But if that wont allow it to work at lower volumes maybe the 40's?
@vladimirrusev4684 жыл бұрын
@@BrianGarside I heard the same about the smaller ATCs ... 7,11,19 ... but 40 is another type of speaker - 3way with dedicated mid driver, that is actually the half of the speaker performancewise. I listening the most of the time on lower levels and is OK.

@@BrianGarside ... With a similar budget, I could have gone for a single T/7i. That's even the option I was initially considering since I could have bought a second one later. On the other hand, after testing these two options, I preferred listening with two T/5i's rather than one T/7i. I had the impression that the 7 alone wasn't reaching its full potential. The result of the pair of T/5i was to my ear more natural and the marriage with my ATCs more successful. My main goal was not to get the lowest frequencies but the best symbiosis with the rest of my stereo system.
@BrianGarside4 жыл бұрын
@@magikfred818 I can see how a bit smaller driver integrated better with the these.Now with down-firing configuration did that mask anything sonically? That was my concern with the T/5i vs the 7i.
@magikfred8184 жыл бұрын
@@BrianGarside ... I can see how a slightly smaller driver integrates better with them. Now, with the down shot configuration, does it hide something in terms of sound? That's what I was concerned about with the T/5i compared to the 7i. I didn't have the opportunity to measure at home the performance of a 7 VS compared to a pair of 5s. But if we take the specifications provided by Rel, knowing that by doubling the number of T/5i, we should gain 3dB over the whole frequency curve ... the 5s have the potential to go down to about the same level as a single 7. But the frequency curve is not the only variable to take into account. The acoustics of the room is paramount in the result. If everything is very satisfactory with an ear adjustement, I intend to have the curve of my installation measured. I look forward to comparing the results.

Extremely useful review and comparisons, thanks. Great that you take the time to make these 3 tables (test tracks, music genres and sonic characteristics) to make us understand what a component is all about and help us making a buying or audition decision based on what we are personally looking for. I’ve been looking for good bookshelf speakers for a few months now and the search has been very frustrating. The most important speaker characteristic for me is the natural, realistic reproduction of female voices. (One can easily get that, in a way, with headphones but I much, much, much prefer listening to my music through speakers). I’m kind of a newbie at this Hi-Fi thing but I have listened to reasonably priced models from companies like ATC, Magnepan, Harbeth, Dynaudio, Wharfedale, Q Acoustics, etc. and the sonic coloration over female voices in all cases was surprisingly high. This is in different rooms with different front ends. It seems that most audio reviewers are used to this coloration and don’t hear it anymore or take it for granted. And this brings me to an inquiry: of all the bookshelf speakers that you have listened to (at whatever price), which ones were the best at reproducing female voices in a "real life" way? The speakers I have right now at home are a pair of US$200 (used price) Cambridge Audio Aero 2 with their BMR driver. The more recent Aeromax 2 is supposedly a bit better. The BMR (balanced mode radiator) driver covers the frequency range from 250 Hz to 22 kHz and the traditional woofer covers the lower frequencies. These speakers are not as bad as the other ones I have listened to so far with regards to female voices but they have some flaws on their own (not very good at high listening volume for example) so I’m still searching. Anything out there that have impressed you, at any price? If we consider the price now, anything interesting below US$3000? Any feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Unfortunately, it didn't give a lasting impression so it's our of my mind and probably won't review it unless I find a very very good deal on it. As for my impressions, it certainly didn't lack anything in particular, somewhat neutral and the bass was louder and lower than I was expecting. Looks pretty cool with stand and all but it was a lot bigger than what I imagined. What did put me off was the treble, which was slightly fatiguing and this was with the attenuation at the lowest treble level. Using the warm HF rolloff filter on the chord would alleviate this somewhat though.

@@jackryder6732 You're not happy with the sound? You can use any speaker wire as long as it's 12 AWG

Ah I missed an opportunity to take a listen at that. How does it compare to the SCM11?

Man , you know them Tektons are better :)

For special 40 the “41 hz” isn’t a lot of bass.

Not really a fair comparison Dynaudio 3k, LS50 1K

Thanks for watching. I compare all speakers I review to the LS50 as a baseline, then whatever else I have on hand.

If you don’t have a 3D soundstage with the S40 you’re using the wrong amplifier
@TheAudiofool4 жыл бұрын
Yup you need a tube amp for that
@vicentemonsalve58844 жыл бұрын
The Audiofool you don’t need a tube amp for that, you can have 3D soundstage with Moon amplifiers, Moon is the perfect match for the S40
@TheAudiofool4 жыл бұрын
@@vicentemonsalve5884 I was using a Moon 250i to break in the S40. Unfortunately, doesn't make the 3D soundstage in the same league as the ATC or Tekton.
@vicentemonsalve58844 жыл бұрын
@@TheAudiofool Ok, off course there are better options when it comes down to 3D soundstage, Magnepans come to mind, I've been tented to buy a Tube amp, specifically the Cayin CS88
@TheAudiofool4 жыл бұрын
@@vicentemonsalve5884 Try to borrow one and test it out. Your moon is quite nice and if you like that sound, there's no need to downgrade to a CS88 (it's a downgrade for me at least) unless you're really curious.

What do you like the most about the ATCs?
@andrewjames52184 жыл бұрын
@@TheAudiofool There is something another level sound about atc. The dynamics of the small atc easily beat my old kef r700 floor standers. The tone also and the neutrality. I also love what dynaudio do also. And can easy live with either
