Peak torque is up but it's not carrying (holding) the power across the rev range. It should be sustaining that high peak torque value farther out in the revs which will make more HP as revs build. It may be having breathing issues. It could be a physical restriction or a harmonic timing issue from the reeds or chamber. Pull the air cleaner out of the housing and make a pass just to see what it does and to check something. Make sure to leave the housing boot connected to the bell mouth of the carb as it will act as a velocity stack which will help make power at the higher revs.. I would expect it to carry that torque level (at least) a little further out before tailing off. While running that pass with the air cleaner out............Also take notice of the bell mouth of the carb and note how much 'Bark Back' (carb spitting) is being thrown out of the carb as it spins up. Use a mirror extension (on a stick) to view the bell mouth inlet. It’s not uncommon to get some bark back as the engine is transitioning 'on to the pipe' through the mid-range revs………….but that should cease after it’s pulling hard on the pipe. If it's throwing a lot of fuel out into the air cleaner boot...........That can generate a 'too rich' condition because the carb is re-fueling an air stream that already has fuel in in. The air cleaner should never be soaked or dripping with fuel when you remove it, which is an indication this is occurring. Barking Back for a prolong rev period indicates the reeds may not be seating completely or seating fast enough because they are too flimsy and don’t match the chambers sonic impulse timing. The reed stiffness ( a specific harmonic value) and chamber harmonics may not be a good match. The reed tension itself and/or the combination of the reeds with a specific chamber may also conflict with the basic port timing of the cylinder. Try a stiffer set of reeds. Make sure the reed stop plates (if there is one on the reed block) are set (bent) far back enough to allow the reeds to fully open. You mentioned something about you added a capacitor to the ignition? Remove it while you are trying to troubleshoot. It may be altering the ignition timing at high revs. You can always reconnect it later if you think it actually helps to start the bike. Put a timing light on it and map the advance (with and without the capacitor) to see what kind of timing curve it is producing just to make sure the curve is what it should be for the CR500. The engines ability to produce a flat torque curve is very dependent on proper timing curve. In general only change one thing at a time as you build an engine up. You will get a better idea of what kind of performance change occurs when you make a particular mod to the engine.

Excellent advice. We spent three days straight trying dozens of combos. Max was 56.78 rwhp. I think the 38mm carb might be the bottleneck
@mikemcduff4273 жыл бұрын
@@KaplanCycles The CC displacement and RPM numbers don't support the need to go to a larger carb. The engine just isn't moving enough air, even at full rpm, to require a larger bore carb. The engine can only pump about 80 CFM based on a V.E. of 90% which is typical for a two stroke engine. The current 38mm can easily flow that and more. You could try a 40mm or 42mm and you might gain a little peak HP........... but you WILL certainly lose some part throttle response down low...........which you don't want on a motocross bike. It won't pull as hard coming out of turns as you roll the throttle on. I don't know for certain but I would expect that because this is a recently designed CR500, (within the last 10 years) it has the benefit of modern computer flow modeling. I'm guessing Honda chose (and tested) the 38mm and found it as a good compromise size for best peak power and best part throttle response. Unless a significant change to the ports were made to increase the V.E. of the engine, which would make it flow more, I wouldn't expect a bigger carb to help much (if at all) but you'll still get the negative aspects of worsening part throttle response as carb size gets bigger. But what the hell.................If I had a 40 or 42 laying around and I could hook it up without too much trouble...............I'd try it just to see the impact of it. Keep in mind that peak power doesn't make a GREAT MXer. One that has the broadest torque curve across the rev range is what you want. Don't get hung up on peak HP numbers. Make mods that produces a torque curve that stretches wide and flat all the way across the screen.

Did anyone ever see that video on utube, I think it was in Denmark, Sweden somewhere like that, where someone ran his Lager CR500 on the dyno, but didn't pull the clutch and/or blip the throttle at the end of the run but let the bike over run and after handful of runs it seized up solid. Try running a thicker base gasket. I know a team that ran the Nationals and all they did to the engine was run a .050” compressed thicker gasket than stock, Reeds, Pro Circuit Exhaust and jetting for race fuel. The team owner told me it lessened the hit at the bottom but gave the bike more top end and smoothed out the power. The thicker gasket effectively changes the port timing. The owner didn’t mention adjusting the squish of the head but he was more talking about the port timing with me. So he may have glossed over that.

I've done the same thing before with base gaskets and you're spot on, the top end power gain is very noticeable and widens the power curve somewhat -vs- stock is all bottom end and mid but falls hard up top.

great video as always. my 2c lift cylinder thicker base gasket reduce squish and Cc size 39mm oval bore PWK go for a rev pipe. big problem with 500s is the lack of rpm wasting time having to shift. DEP is mid to top with a long silencer will also help rpm. then fit a STIC to the carb (massive over rev and flattens torque curve. big increases in throttle response) try some longer gearing. I use 14-46 gearing to make the most of the power and torque. I found it revs so fast through the gears I literally couldn't keep up dancing on the gear lever with anything shorter. nothing can touch it
