Hello Kevin Reading a Plug Is a Good Idea. If u see Silver/Gray Specs of material, on plug. It's your Piston Melting. Could be Timing to high, or Running Lean. Running Nitro Methane also does this, Just before piston Melt down. If running Racing gas , at the end of race , is the best way to tell if it's to Fat or Lean. That's why I run methanol. As long as motor is 180*F @ launch & stays under 210 @ top end. I don't have to Get out to read a plug at the end of the track.

Have you tried those multi electrode E3 or other brand plugs? A lot of people don’t understand spark plug temperature ratings. A cold plug has a very short well between the tip of the electrode and where the ceramic contacts the inside of the metal part of the plug. A hot plug has a very deep well, upto three times deeper than a cold plug. The actual purpose of the heat range is to allow the plug to get hot enough to self clean and has nothing to do with the amount of power the engine will make, Except if the plug gets too hot and causes pre ignition without spark. As combustion chamber pressures and temperatures increase due to boost you want to run a colder plug to prevent the plug from getting too hot. As for plug gap, I was always under the impression that as the pressure went up the electrical resistance of air went down so you could run a wider gap with boost. But apparently it had this backwards and you need a smaller gap the higher the boost, but then you run into the problem of not enough size on the ark to properly ignite the fuel, which is where the advertisements for multiple electrode plugs make their claims.
@KSRPerformanceFabrication2 жыл бұрын
Multiple electrode plugs are nothing but a sales gimmick. Electricity will always find the shortest/easiest path to ground through and hanging a bunch of extra ground strap material in the chamber of a race engine is a great way to introduce detonation and damage an engine.

cant see why reading plugs would be bad. it is for sure a good trick. i bought an 03 tahoe missing on what sounded like one cylinder. come to find out it was 2 but when i pulled plugs i noticed plug 1 had 0 timing mark at all and plug 5 had a very faint one and the rest were in the exact same spot and decently gray on hte timing mark like normal. pulled coil packs and sure enough cylinders 1 and 5 had 0 change when unplugging. there was obvious indication of this when reading the plugs in my case.

Absolutely love the content - really good stuff. One thing that would be awesome - figure out how to get the camera focus to work for you on the close up stuff. I LOVE the spark plug reading - but they are super blurry. Also - I loved that you touched on making power past the peak. It kills my soul a little more ever dyno chart I look at and they end the pull as soon as the thing just starts to roll over. IMO, you want to see as far beyond the peak as you can safely pull the motor too, probably limited by your valve-train in most cases. An informed decision on shift points is a lot easier with dyno data to back it up. This is especially relevant to stick shift cars, which have MUCH poorer shift recovery, and in turn need to run out further past the peak to see their best average power.
@hommie7892 жыл бұрын
Kevin what air/fuel ratio did you get on the dyno, during the pull, after moving the sensor?
@KSRPerformanceFabrication2 жыл бұрын
At WOT, the readings were the same due to the amount of exhaust coming through the pipe. The issue that was corrected was at low engine RPMs, the O2 would still read something "normal".
