Dyson Face-Off: Gen5 Detect or V15?

The price of the Gen5 is usually less than $100 difference to the V15 in Australia. Pulling a trigger is fine if you're doing some spot vacuuming but a double-storey house can take 30 minutes to an hour to vacuum and if you vacuum twice a week, that's 1-2 hours of strain on your finger/wrist. If your job has you clicking a mouse all day or some other repetitive motion with your fingers, you're at a higher risk of carpal tunnel syndrome already. $100 is well worth reducing some of the strain on your index finger.

For $10 I have bought a gadget that switches on and off the trigger. This means that you don't have to have your finger on the trigger at all times. With the gadget, you can still use the trigger if you want. The price on Amazon is a few hundred dollars between the 2 vacuums. With the $ 79 extra crevice tool, you are looking at a big price increase. That is why we bought the V15 multi-colored for less than $ 600.

It’s a complete gimmick. Giving an accurate live digital reading down to the nano particle is not realistic and just to make the user “feel good”

Mah is misleading for capacity. Mah is how much current can be supplied in one hour. But you also need voltage for calculating total amout of energy. Gen5 voltage is higher , so basically those battery capacities are the same. In Gen 5 motor, hepa filter and overall vacuum is heavier, They changed the geometry to find best weight distribution. Thats why battery looks bigger. We should compare Wh numbers for capacity

PSA on accessories: The gold tube with the crevice tool and brush comes standard with the V15 Detect Absolute (possibly the Extra) but NOT V15 Detect standard. That is the only difference between those two V15 models as far as I know.

I have the Gen5 and I'm afraid to install the wall dock because it looks like the only way to uninstall it if it has to be moved is to rip it off of the wall.

I did see a video of the two lasers in use and the Gen5 seemed 5x brighter in daylight.

The Gen5 is brighter, but the original laser fluffy head on the V15 can be turned off. For what it’s worth, you can get the new brighter head for the V15 and I think new versions come with it now.

Something tells me the gen6 will have a trigger plus the on/off option.

The accessories are NOT compatible between the Gen 5 and V15. They will not fit each other's vacuum. One massive problem with the Gen 5 that NO ONE has mentioned, is that even though the Gen 5 comes with a built in crevice tool, the end is way high. You have to bend to reach the floor. You CANNOT use the small crevice tool at the end of the wand AND try to fit the outer wand back. It does not fit. I have had Dyson engineers look at it. You HAVE to buy a separate crevice tool that you have to place at the end of the wand. The extra part cost $ 79 and change on Dyson's website.
