A cover of this with the instruments of Hopes and Dreams would go so hard. Anyways, here’s some possibilities of what may be happening during the song. The first is the traditional, Occam’s Razor concept of saving Matzu. Nikku to the rescue. The second, which I visualized, is not necessarily that, but Matzu sitting in a blurry room. Her face is still contorted into that blank smile due to her corruption, but this time, for some unknown reason, she’s calling out. Maybe part of her is still in there. As the part from the trailer occurs, she sends a pulse out through the Dreamfield with that warbling trickling noise, and as the dreamier ambience kicks in, something happens. The blur fades like a person coming out of water, and Nikku’s voice “arrives” from across the airwaves and her form fades in, semi-transparent and shocked. Connection occurred, and they’re “synchronizing” this time, not fighting. Matzu is still under evil’s control, the fight won’t be over after the song ends, and it won’t be for a long time, but Matzu’s allowed this duet with what little power she has. At the climactic saxophone part she stops singing and *reaches* out, reaching for her daughter. Somehow, through the Dreamfield, Matzu’s hand nearly physically touches Nikku’s fingers as they materialize out of the waves, and then the physical connection breaks. Matzu falls to her “knees,” spent and broken-hearted. Even then, the blank smile doesn’t fade off of her face and she just stares at the ground. Nikku sings still, looking down as if at her mother even though they’re worlds apart, and Matzu eventually jerks her head up, as if expecting to see her daughter. The song ends thus, Nikku’s form fading and Matzu kneeling there alone.
