A surprisingly not very well known recommendation: The Machine stops is a 1909! Distopic novella (35 pages) by E.M Foster (A room with a view, Howards End…). Internet, instant messaging, Amazon, iPads, 3D printers, AI and more are a reality in a world devastated by an apocalyptic climate change. The way all this alienates people and transforms world society seems eerily prescient.

I've read Brave New World three times and gotten something different out if it each time. I think the core question being explored is what is happiness, and can happiness be socially engineered. It's a question as old as Plato's Republic, and explored well in Brave New World.

If you need any reason to go back and re-read Brave New World, I think it would be because, opposite to Hunger Games, it really explores the reasons behind what you see in the surface of the story. Wonderful, core dystopian book. Cheers!

I love The Giver so much! Another dystopian I loved was called The Alliance by Gerald Lund about a society that has chip implanted in their brain and every time they have a mean or "bad" thought they receive a shock from their wristbands. So basically they are being conditioned to be good. I haven't heard of The Chrysalis. I will have to look into it.

I've always loved dystopian novels! This is a fun list, filled with a lot of excellent books! Have a few other recommendations- for what is probably a middle grade recommendation, I loved the Shadow Children series starting with Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Then for YA- the Uglies by Scott Westerfeld really had my heart as a preteen- great books for that stage in life! And for some adult books- Never Let Me Go is a quiet dystopian novel that I really enjoyed. I need to read We by Yevgeny Zamyatin, A Clockwork Orange and most overdue is The Handmaid's Tale! And we are totally on the same page, I also hated Brave New World when I read it back in high school haha- the most minimal interest in picking it back up again! 🏬

I highly recommend the Arc of the Scythe trilogy by Neil Schusterman. It's not only my favorite work of dystopian sci-fi fiction, it's also one of my favorite books of all time. It's about a future in which humans have defeated death. However, humans still procreate, and Earth's resources are scarce. "Sythes" are people who decide which humans are killed to sustain the society's way of life. Great world building, multidimensional characters with relationship depth, an interesting cult, political intrigue, and some blood baths that I would consider body horror adjacent.

I didn’t like Brave New World in high school, either; I think I was part of a group buy for a Cliff’s Notes of that one! (Sadly not enough internet for that to be free online; we had to pay to skip reading a book. 😔) I reread it as an adult and understood it more but didn’t love the prose. A lot of this is like a “books Laura likes” list! I will not beat my usual Ishiguro recommendations onto you again, but have you looked into This Perfect Day by Ira Levin? I would definitely classify 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?' by Philip K Dick as dystopian sci-fi. I enjoyed it and would recommend reading it at least once. "Station Eleven" by Emily St John Mandel is more of a litfic spin on dystopia, but it definitely reads like a similar thought process to The Giver. Should we remember or should the 'before' be destroyed for the good of the after?

I’d like to recommend the Japanese light novel series: Library War by Hiro Arikawa, it set in an alternative world (or in fact, an alternative version of modern Japan) that all publications were severely screened and miniature ‘wars’ broke out on a daily basis between the public libraries Libraries and the the scrutiny committee. Everything else is perfectly normal which made it more sarcastic. It’s YA and I did read the series when I was a young adult, but I still consider it’s interesting today.

Interesting. I also read BNW in high school and I remember it being one of the few assigned readings that I actually liked, though it is rather philosophical and as such not everyone's cup of tea. I think what drew me in was the extreme juxtapositions (the obvious one being "civilisation" vs "savagery"), something that Huxley later criticised, and the pending question of which was supposedly better. I feel this is unfortunately relevant again, as nowadays people tend to be adamant on their way of life being better or the right one, and you are often asked to choose a side rather than form a differentiated opinion on a topic.

No i agree. I tried to read brave new world. Its overly pretentious garbage. In the Giver, his job isnt give it's called reciever. He will eventually be a Giver once a new reciever is picked. Also if you like dystopian that gives u actual answers.. (cuz even 1984 doesnt truly give that, still my fav ever) anyways i suggest: The Silo series. It's 3 books and omg it is AMAZING. Gives u answers. They are in an underground silo, ppl who "want out" have to go out and clean the sensor cameras to the outside... they start to think maybe things arent as they are being shown. A young adult series thats good: Uglies, Pretties, Specials, Extras.. its also a series. Set in a place where at 16 kids get surgery to be pretty. And everything is bubbly and perfect... but it isnt exactly what it seems

Please do re read Brave New World. Huxley wrote this in the 30’s and it is a fascinating exploration of what he saw in America. There is so much we can see in our current world. If 1984 is Orwell’s look at communist Soviet Union, this book is Huxley’s view of capitalist US.

Brave New World is relatively short, you could probably read it in one sitting. It's been a while since I've read it (and the other two dystopian classics, F451 and 1984), but from what I remember it's the best of the three in terms of world building, but the weakest in terms of plot.

I reread Chrysalids in the past few years (my prior time before that was high school) and quite enjoyed it... though I'd also enjoyed it in high school. I'd suggest giving Brave New World a try - in Canada, I believe, it's in Public Domain and can be accessed through Project Gutenberg, so all you're risking is time... and you can give yourself permission to chuck it against the metaphorical wall if you're not into it. For me BNW and 1984 collectively opened my love of dystopias (although 1984 was far better, IMHO). As for other dystopias to try, I'd recommend 84k by Claire North a try, a dystopia of a world where a fine can be paid instead of serving jail time, for any crime, including murder, so, clearly, not like our world at all in any way, just a silly story with zero social commentary risk. Also, a bit of an off-beat suggestion, Glasshouse, by Charles Stross, in which in the far, post-singularity future, a spy signs up for an "experiment" seeking volunteers to research 20th century society via simulation, which may be a dystopia in the making just by itself.

I know I’m in the minority opinion here, but _The Chrysalids_ is great… right up until the ending, which (without dropping any spoilers) completely negates the moral arc of the entire book. Wyndham’s fans definitely did not like me pointing that out (I got reams of hate comments on my old website for it 😁), but after several readings I think my interpretation is the one supported by the text.

I had read 1984, so when my high school english class was going to read it, I asked the teacher if we could read Brave New World instead. To my surprise, she ordered a box of BNW and the teaching materials. I don't think she realized how racy it was, haha. It's an important book, but not a fun read for me. 1984 presents the classic dictatorship of fear and power. and BNW presents a society controlled by propaganda, sex and drugs. Huxley has talked about how he was criticizing the Fabian Socialists in Britain, who openly talked about using drugs and mass hypnosis to control society. He said even H.G. Wells (a founder of Fabians) started to distance himself from the movement. I need to read more Wyndham. I read Day of the Triffids, which has been adopted to film several times now but never quite true to the book. The Giver, was made into a good movie with Brenton Thwaites.

1984 was one of my favorites as a teenager. But, I later identified it as being basically patient zero for the third act being a monologue in which the antagonist explains why they're doing what they're doing. That trope really annoys me, because it doesn't feel convincing, and it reads as though the author was more interested in lecturing the reader about their ideas than in crafting a compelling conclusion to the story. I have some other gripes with it, too. For instance, I don't think Orwell really thought out what he was trying to critique super well; it's just a blanket statement of "authority bad," without really probing that too deeply. And, if you look at Orwell's biography, that kinda tracks with his own rather jumbled relationship to socialism during his lifetime. He was a guy who believed that socialism was only good if it corresponded to the very specific vision of it that existed only in his mind. I know you don't really want to, but I would recommend rereading Brave New World. I think it is actually pretty applicable to the current moment. The idea that overwhelming peoples' senses is a much more effective way to control people than outright authoritarian oppression.

Brave New World is extremely satirical; as such, everything is wildly exaggerated. The bizarre and awful characters work in a bizarre and awful society with characteristics all too similar to our own; it's a mirror on our own society's stupidity in government, business, industry, and more. Like Monty Python almost, it's exaggerated to the point of being funny in parts, and it has several ironic twists in the plot. However that humor gets very dark and horrible (it is dystopian). Interestingly it makes a few "predictions" about such things as birth control, test-tube babies, and cloning; but those were ideas that were already being studied at the time. There are inside/meta jokes about Shakespeare and Rousseau, and likely some real politicians from his day. Overall, the writing has a jaded, snide bent; it's snarky and I like it. You should read it again in that light; I bet you'll like it. maybe.

I think I remember the satire rubbing me the wrong way. But I'm hopeful that I'll have a difference experience now

bRAdburY's anthology A Pleasure To Burn is an excellent collection as accompaniment to Fahrenheit 451.

I didn't get along with BNW myself, 1984 is a far superior book.

1984 was one of the two scariest novels I ever read. And no you don't have to reread brave new world although its ideas about manipulation of the human genome were prescient. As for tender is the flesh liked the horror and the general story but found the actual premise in no way believable even for dystopia sci-fi.⚛😀

It's nice to have read BNW, as it's the carrot type of tyrannical government to the stick of 1984. But I totally get academia sucking the life out of books. Here's your dystopian emoji: 👁

I'm going to encourage you to NOT reread A Brave New World. I read Animal Farm in high school and absolutely hated it. It was the only required reading I ever hated. And the idea of picking that book up again literally makes me curl up into a protective ball inside. So my opinion is; why put yourself through that?

I strongly disliked reading BNW and I read it in my 40s. It has some good concepts, but the plot and characters did not do much for me. Also that part in the “reservation” was not my cup of tea. My vote is for not rereading it.

I read Brave New World for the first time at the end of 2023, and I found it fascinating. It was one of my most highly rated reads of 2023. I can't imagine reading BNW in high school and understanding the implications of the choices this dystopian society makes. The society's belief that pregnancy and natural childbirth are disgusting and obscene, the modification of fetal environment to create castes, and the maintenance of complacency of the populous with brainwashing and drugs was absolutely chilling. Really, some of the best dystopian fiction I have ever read. There are very dated and questionable racial, ethnic, and gender stereotypes that I found offensive, but have been told that Huxley may have placed them in the novel as a protest to contemporary societal norms. I do recommend a second read of Brave New World as an adult!
