In this video we show you how we make traditional rope narrowboat fenders. We purchased some manila rope from Tradline rope and fenders at Braunston on the Grand Union Canal. and proceeded to teach ourselves how to make rope fenders.

I can remember my dad making fenders and looped ends on ropes etc when I was young (I'm 60 now). He was so fast it was hard to follow the steps. Even to this day I can't look at a rope without thinking "dad would have tidied that up." Thanks for helping me remember a nice memory about my dad.

Hi Mark Really interesting. Next up is a tipcat. I liked the sound of Phil English. Makes me think of breakfast. Your fender hook was brilliant. How about putting a backsplice in the rope instead of a half hitch. It would look neater, I think. Keep making the vlogs. You cover things that other vlogs do not. Jeff

Nice craftsmanship on both the fender and the fender clip. Seems many narrowboaters have side businesses. I don’t know how many purveyors of fenders there are but I would think you could definitely sell the clips in 4 packs and likely in complete sets with fenders. Curious, do all narrowboats with the style of roof edge (not a grab rail) have the same size edge where the clip sits?

Well done you. How satisfying to to make your own fenders. Great video. Thankyou. Have you made or going to make a button. We had our narrowboat for eight years and cruised many miles but became to difficult to mange so we had to sell. So now we watch all you tubers. Many happy hours boating. Thanks again. We wish you well. Enjoy. Carole and John

Don't sell yourself short Mark, not every "imbecile" would have the wherewithal or the discipline and patience to research and acquire the skills required to 'craft their own fenders. Looking forward to the new buttons for the stern, and button with wings for the bow (now see what you started - lol) Good job mate, 'smart as a button stick'.

I do like your idea for the fender hooks but... you could possibly pass a bite through the one hole and then pass the tail through that bite. Still completely adjustable and secure. Plus you can move the fender to different hooks without untying the lanyard. Just pull out the tail from the bite, then pull out the bite.
