E-bike Torque Sensor and Cadence Sensor Explained

E-bikes use different types of pedal assist technologies, and in this video, I show you the difference between an bike with a torque sensor, and an e-bike with a cadence sensor. On an e-bike with a cadence sensor, the bicycle senses, when the cranks are turning, and when it reads that the cranks have turned more than 3/4 of a turn, then it applies full power to the rear wheel. On an electric bicycle with a torque sensor, built into the pedals and cranks, the bike measures how hard a person is pedaling and gives them an equivalent amount of power, so, if you are pedaling softly, then you will get a little bit of pedal assist power from the electric bike motor, and if you are putting more pressure on the pedals and pedaling harder, then the electric motor will give you more power because it senses the extra torque on the bicycle crank arms. I used two different bikes in this video to demonstrate the difference between a torque sensor and a cadence sensor, and I hope it helps you make the right decision when selecting an E bike. If you are buying a bike that you mostly want to ride with the throttle, then it doesn’t matter, but if you are planning to do a lot of pedaling, then a torque sensor is much better.

Excellent demonstration, and how useful each type is does depend on how you use the bike. But, the quality of the setup also plays a role. I've used bikes with dynamic cadence sensing that have been great for pedaling (I'm a former marathoner), and I've ridden some bikes with torque sensors that are just poor and difficult to maintain any consistent speed.
