Wow, I just acquired 2 E.C.E. Planes at a local estate sale for $80. 1 a primus 701p and the other is a jointer plane. Each is 23 1/2” long in great shape (one looks new) and are just beautiful tools! So glad they brought me to your channel! Love your content!

Did I go 'rogue' one handed again 🙈 I really shouldn't "It'll end in tears", they used to say.

They also made a 60cm long jointer following the same principle. It´s kind of rare but if you´re lucky and patient you can maybe get one. It´s just the best for flattening boards because it glides so easily.

Works really well on here and as I say Karl Holtey method too. We'll see how well it works after repairs.

My woodworking teacher at school was the spitting image of Rab C Nesbitt and walked around the class with a 3ft length of dowel. He was always on the prowl for any reprobate that might leave their plane upright. Any offender would feel the sting of the dowel. It became the class prank to set some poor sod's plane upright on the bench and just let events take their course. Can't wait to see the Primus in action.

Blimey Paul. Another era wasn't it. Mine was quite nice to me as I think he liked my Mom 😂 Yes the Primus will get a little done and a few videos. I can't wait to personalise it. Lose that bit of filler, smooth off some 'corners' and add a bit of.. We will see 😉

Thank you very interesting. What is it like to use? What are the benefits over a Stanley 4 or transitional plane? Maybe you will say in the follow up videos.

Hi. I've still not had chance to set it up and complete it. Trying to juggle commissions, teaching, family, and home stuff and build a KZbin channel is a lot. Should be more in the next few weeks/months on planes. Jamie

I think there's a lot to be said for the dexterity that German style front handle would afford you, especially when canting the plane. Inspiring me to make my own eventually.

I have a simplified version of this. It cost me £10 in a junk shop. I put some foam behind the rear”tote”. I agree they need customising for comfort. The other huge positive is the superb quality of the blade. No backlash is a huge plus for me as I find it really annoying. There is a video on you tube showing them being made in Germany by a family business. I see you identify with Worcestershire but I detect a hint of black country or brum😊 Try planing Lingus vitae!

That's cool. I need to do more with this plane. Busy atm. I'm from Worcestershire. My Workshop is in Stourbridge. Lots of accents pass through my workshop. Some might rub off. 👍

until now never quite understood how they made the no backlash adjustment with a threaded rod. Really clever what they did. That plane is made since at least the 50 and yours is likely pre 1990

It is really clever. I need to do a light restoration on mine and then customise it. By the way, mine was bought new in 2021. I've no way to work out how old the used one is.

I've always been fascinated by the German style planes, but my only problem with the examples you have here is that plastic adjuster knob. Why would they go through the trouble of making a great plane, only to use a plastic knob on the end?
@twcmaker
@twcmaker Жыл бұрын
I should think a metal knob wouldn't be cost effective. Maybe I should make a wooden knob. 🤔 Food for thought.
@timothymallon
@timothymallon Жыл бұрын
@@twcmaker I would pay a few extra dollars for a metal knob. It's like Stanley selling their new standard No. 4 smoothing planes for 80 bucks and they have plastic totes and knobs. It's like they gave up caring.
@twcmaker
@twcmaker Жыл бұрын
That's one way to look at it. While I'm not a fan of plastic, the wooden ones would take longer to produce. The ECE Primus plane sells 80% in Germany. So they're used to it being like that. 20% rest of the World is quite a small chunk really. And it it a tough kind of Bakellite plastic. So I'm ok with it. 🤔 I'd rather a wooden one than cold metal though.

I inherited one from my father and it is a fine looking piece of equipment.There is one issue I can't figure out. The fine adjustment block on the bottom sticks out by about an 1/8". No matter what I do I can't get it to sit flush. Any recommendations.
