It'd be good to see this demonstrated on a dog that isn't already trained to that level of obedience and has a lower level of attention
@sararunge15983 ай бұрын
But if your dog doesn’t know simple commands like place, sit, down, etc. they’re definitely not ready for e-collar training. You do not teach a dog obedience with an e-collar, you enforce it. They learn that once the said command (that they know how to do already) has been honored the pressure from the e-collar stops. Thats how they learn how the e-collar works. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks for this. I'm a dog trainer, and the only dangerous thing about these collars is the lack of knowledge of the owner. A car can be dangerous in the wrong hands but that doesn't mean that all cars are bad. Learn how to utilize the tool, and it gives more freedom to your dog than a leash ever could.

Negative reinforcement: you are taking away something to increase a behaviour. Punishment: you add something to decrease a behaviour. He described it correctly. But what does he take away? The shock from the e collar, which he pressed. So he was actually adding that shock. Therefore, it is a punishment. He was the one who is doing the marketing stuff for the e collar.

The Tom Davis 280C is the best remote-collar on the market. Your custom button layout is logical, easy to learn & very safe for your dog. Combined with your methodology for introducing the remote-collar it works amazingly well. My dog gets excited now when I get the remote-collar out because she knows it’s a fun off-the-leash walk or hike. Thank you Tom! Wonderful explanation about how the e-collar works and how to use it. I started using an e-collar for training my dogs more than 10 years ago. The best thing I did was engage a professional trainer to demonstrate how to use it properly. One benefit I found was when one of my dogs lost his hearing. Using the e-collar in vibrate mode, I could get the dog's attention to look at me and then I was able to give him a hand-signal. Fortuitously, whenever I was training my young dogs, I always gave commands along with hand-signals.

Great intro to ecollars. The most impactful group demo for me when I was skeptical on the ecollar was someone holding the collar facing the group. Trainer standing behind pressing button starting at 1. Group can watch the face of the trainee and see where they feel it. Can be a very different #?by person but it’s usually teens. Then put on a dog and see where they feel it. As you say, much lower number. Feeling is believing! Or watching someone else feel it for the not so brave😅

Good intro. Way too many people have been told this is the dreadful "Shock collar" That is nothing but a pain delivery system. I find it frustrating that so many trainers who actually know better perpetuate this myth. My dog and my board and trains love their ecollars. To them it means freedom. We're going to do something fun. I did however use a correction on a dog while teaching them to drop a ball and the dog decided balls are no longer fun and wouldn't play with them after that. A few things I did wrong. The dogs toy drive wasn't high enough to counter balance the correction. My dog has high toy drive and I can correct all day and it's not an issue. He just loves his ball that much. Also, I hadn't worked with her long enough to understand the correction before using it for the toy. Now when I introduce the ecollar I mostly use food like you did because there isnt a dog on the planet who will starve themselves over a little correction. I may also use crumpled tissues or a shoe or something the dog shouldn't pick up anyway so at least if the dog develops a superstitious behavior about it, it works in everyone's favor.

Thats one of the reasons why I wouldnt use the e-collar in such cases. So many things can be trained effectively withouth it. I would just use the e-collar for recalls since I think that's the single most important thing when a dog's off leash. Using the e-collar for a bunch of other stuff because it's easy becomes a slippery slope and people will make mistakes and superstitious behaviour can appear. My dog already has a superstitious character and I'm building confidence with him. I feel like e-collar corrections can take that away. Like you said every dog is different so It's important to know the dog you're training.

@tomdavisofficial I just got a e collar a few days ago I started at a level 6 and my dog just ignores .e no matter how many times I hold it .. I tried going up little by little and I got all the way up to 23 before she started looking around and trying to scratch it I feel like that's high but I'm not a dog trainer.. so I wanted to know if that's fine or that's too high.. even at 23 she will walk back and fourth like 6 to 8 times before listening.. any tips
@DogSpeak10 ай бұрын
@@youngmoney1410 Double check your fit. A loose fit, long or thick fur can give inconsistent stims. If after that your dog still responds at 23, then that's his working level. It's really up to the dog to determine the level, but typically you can dial it back some once the dog has a better understanding of the training. My dog responds quickly to 1, which I can't even feel on my tongue. I had a dog that wouldn't respond until 60 like it was nothing. Also there is environmental factors. In a park you'll often have to level up a bit because of the excitement. So start in a relatively neutral place until the dog picks it up. If you say come and she paces, its sounds like she is confusion. A new ecollar can cause them to be unsure of where it's coming from, what it is and what it means. In any case of uncertainty, leash pressure is your friend. Say come, engage the collar and give leash pressure in your direction. Once the dog commits, you can turn all of the pressure off and reward when she completes it. If she gets distracted halfway, mark it no, and engage the collar and pressure again until she commits. Rinse and repeat. Once she gets it and you say come and she immediately turns and comes, then you dont have to use the collar. Essentially I'm teaching the dog how to turn the collar off and how to keep it from turning on by following the commands. If you teach place... Say place, engage the collar and use the leash to guide the dog to the place. When all 4 feet are on it shuts off. But you may have to guide her for a while before she gets it.. Personally, I dont use the collar on a dog in place. If she steps one foot off however, I mark it no, engage the collar and guide he back to place with the leash. Dogs can sometimes get confusion but it's important that we follow through and teach them what we want from them even if they struggle at first. Always end with, the dog went to the place good girl, and we lived happy ever after. Don't end with, 'the dog hid under the table, I felt bad and took the collar off.' Over time she'll get better and you'll definitely be able to dial it back some or you may not need to use it at all. Play with them after training, put the collar on before going out, eating, etc and they will get super amped to have their collars put on.

I use it for recall mostly also. I can let her run around off leash. If I can’t see her I push the beeper on collar and she’ll come running! Feel it’s a safer way to let her run. Warning!!! Don’t put it in your pocket and forget about it! I’ve done it!! Sucks! lol

I wore my dogs bark collar on my wrist to see what they experienced. It vibrated, beeped and next shocked. Two warnings. My dog Chester actually would come to me to put it on him so he could go outside. Chester also learned to moan, huf, stomp under the sensor levels. My dog Bear opts to stay quiet with his on. Most of the time the batteries are dead now. When they figure it out I just charge it. I am learning a lot about the training collar version because FionaClaire my 30lb puppy is all muscle and can keep up with cars at 35mph. She also will yank and pull me to test me. She knows training cues and will do them when she chooses. FionaClaire doesn't have a bark problem so I don't need the bark version for her. I am glad I came across your videos.

I just got Dogtra ARC 802 for my 2 dogs (2yo and 1.5yo), we started training and conditioning yesterday,the dogs are working at lvl 5 and responding nicely and faster with their already known commands. Thanks to you and your videos I decided to give it a go and train with an ecollar, in hope to give my girls more offleash freedom when we go for walks in nature and at the beach. I tried this without ecollar and I always have fear that they wont listen in case something grabs too much of their attention (like for example the other day we were walking in some fields and a rabbit jumped out 2 meters away from us, they went into wild chase, one dog came back right away but the other took off and didnt come back right away,took her at least 15 secs, I was terrified she was going to hurt herself as there were bushes and holes and uneven ground and all kinds of crap in the field. Thankfully she was fine, but I do not want this to happen again as we walk around nature alot and I want them to freely explore without having to stress or restrain the dogs with long leashes or extend leashes all the time) Thank you for your videos and content,they help us so much in our journeys with our furballs

Just wanted to say I got this collar months ago, but was still unsure about it, and had it hanging on my wall for the longest time. Meanwhile, we've been working on recall, and he's been doing really good, but sometimes he'll come and still fly by me, which I didn't want off leash, it was making me nervous. Seen a video of a husky with your collar on, so I thought to give it a try again, since he mostly needed fine tuning. Didn't bother re-tuining it to him, just put it on, had it at a 7 because i couldn't remember exactly where you said, but it seemed like a good spot. Had some treats on me (even though he doesn't only come for those), called his name while pressing the button and I got an instant laser beam dog sprinting towards me. Felt so much relief.

Sorry, I didn't see the part about "without food". Definitely try a treat like Tom suggests but if not toy motivated either, you could try having the crate open at both ends and use a leash to have the dog go through it to see that it's not something scary. Then you close the one end and bring the dog in and out and then close both ends. Just another suggestion.

I can not keep them concerning my circumstances. 2 of the 3 husky's apparently have a scares social issue. These two do not allow me to touch or pet them. The original owners have shared that when they got the husky's, they were caged, and obviously the original owners never trained them. What can I do now that they are at the age of 2 and 3 yrs. to get them to trust me as my efforts is only to share love and care.

It would be nice if dog trainers actually used dogs that need training rather than dogs that are already well trained. Of course it is working on a well behaved dog, but what about a dog that is out of control? I think that is more real life stuff people want to see. But great info and very helpful for the most part!

My course does all that

I just had to replace my dogs collar after 8 years- I got this collar. Same brand. I love the colors.. however I did order it from Amazon… but I know the difference between a 30$ collar and this one. I was trained with it years ago.

We just purchased a Dogtra 1900S for our newly adopted (roughly one year old) German Shepherd who is displaying some behaviors such as play biting/nipping (still hurts!), jumping and dog reactivity (only in very close contact which is good!). How long should we wait to use a "correction" for these behaviors? My understanding is that we should always enforce obedience to try to prevent these behaviors from happening at all, but when she gets excited, she starts nipping and play biting.

P.S. I ONLY ever considered buying an e-collar after watching all of your other videos and seeing how much you genuinely love dogs and would not harm them. You explain everything so well. Love the fact that we can eventually allow her the freedom to more safely go camping, fishing, etc.off leash. So excited for that! Thank you!!

I'd like to see a video like this done with a dog that isn't already trained as well as he is.

You should make a video of e collar training with a stubborn untrained dog

Why would you get a dog if you don't like barking? I love it when my dog barks it's literally how we communicate. I wish I could send a video of her singing while I cook or her interaction with the television. She is so funny and lovely.

Appreciate the video. Do you have one on E collar training with a dog that has little to no prior training?
