This is old news. Let me clear it up for my fellow Hip Hop heads out there. During the Death Row days, If music was sitting around for too long, Suge had a habit of either releasing it himself or giving it to another artist.. He did this to Dre all the time as Dre would sit on his records for ages. So California Love was given to Pac, as was Can't C Me. This really pissed Dre off at the time, too.

The original version with 3 Dre verses was supposed to be the 1st single for "The Chronic 2" but the story is Pac deebo'd the beat from Dre. It's the remix that ends up on "All Eyez On Me" tho so maybe they worked it out for the original Dre & Pac version to be on Dre's album. From the sonic direction of this song & "Keep Their Heads Ringin'", "The Chronic 2" might've been one of the hardest sounding projects of the late 90's if Dre stayed on Deathrow. Same goes for Snoop's 2nd album. What could've been...

Dr. Dre originally recorded California Love for (what would have been) Dre's second album on Death Row and the follow-up to The Chronic: The Chronic 2. That was one of several albums that was planned to be released after All Eyez On Me. Check the original pressing of All Eyez On Me and go near the end of the booklet for the album, in the Upcoming Releases page. Dre originally had a second verse and removed it for Pac to replace it with his verse. It's been rumored that the remix only appears on 2Pac's All Eyez On Me album because the original album version (that was released later on the How Do U Want It maxi-single) was gonna go on Dre's The Chronic 2 album along with another song that featured 2Pac on it. Dre remixed it for him and that one is on Pac's album.

I first thought when he said Dre made it for himself and an other rapper- immediately thought Snoop - maybe that's why EDI didn't tell the name..Cause of jealousy. It's rumoured anyway about Snoop beef with Pac being jealous of Pac's success even he acted like there were brothers, putting him on the inside cover of "The Doggfather".. Dre was wise to his own stuff with leaving and doing Aftermath! As much as I like Pac the reaction wasn't cool. Dre gives him the perfect comeback single which was the base to the fans for his entire album and as thanks he talks about how long Dre needs to do a track, etc..That's a childish behaviour. Ok, 24 Years is young but he had done 3 albums already with shitty contracts. Almost not very much money for an #1 album. He was a lyricist but didn't know shit about producing. How long it takes when it comes to find the right samples, beats, vibes and putting that stuff together perfectionally. That's why Dre's the best producer since the NWA days. You can put that music on any time now and it's still better than newer stuff. Good music takes its time. That's what differences a good song to a "monster" like EDI says. A lyricist like Pac comes in and says yo gimme a beat without knowing what work was it to get the ideas for samples, the beat etc.. That's why he rapped so many double albums ignoring that many instrumentals wasn't that good. From the albums after he died, which is an album that has more than 3 really good tracks out of 24? That were all double albums. I can only say Dre knows what's good music plus he can rap, too. He gave us so much and still does. Without Dre no NWA, no Cube, no Eazy , no Snoop, no Death Row, no Em, no Game and so on! That are the best rap albums to me. Dre made through Em way for Fitty, G-Unit, Young Buck and all of them have own labels now... Just say thanks!!

I heard it was a dre song but suge insisted he put pac on it. The first song with dre and tupac together and it was a great song made it a smash hit.
