*IMPORTANT CORRECTION: In our review we use a Spektrum AR620, state that it is not a smart rx, and point out that differential thrust should not work with this rx. We had differential thrust anyway. We go on to conclude that differential thrust will be available to protocols other than Spektrum Smart rx's as the differential thrust is a mix handled by the Smart ESC programming. This is not correct. As it turns out the AR620 IS a Smart rx that is only limited in telemetry options compared to other Smart rx's. This explains why we had differential thrust. Horizon was right on with the information they provided. Protocols other than Spektrum with Smart technology will NOT have the differential thrust and reversing options. We are usually very tactical with what we say and how we say it in a review. We want only to provide the best, most accurate, and helpful information we can. We apologize for any confusion. We will be more diligent in our research and try to see to it we don't make this kind of error again. Sorry for any confusion. I would personally like to thank Old Coastie (on RCG, RC Stuff on YT) for correcting us and educating us on what the proper information is. I appreciate you catching this early and sharing with us so we could get the correction out there quickly. It's people like you in our Model AV8R community that make us better. Thanks again! Very interesting. I seem to remember talk that updating the AR620 and 410 receivers firmware gave them near SMART receiver telemetry but did not expect the differential thrust to work without an onboard mixing board or some radio mixing when not using actual SMART equipment. I'll have to look closer at the dual 40A ESC, sounds like it could be fun. Great flying as always Adam, looking forward to the next review.

Good point on taking the rod off the servo arm. I'm dumb and didn't even consider it. That's why we come here - you always have helpful tips that many people would overlook or not even realize on their own. It looks like yours is a little squirrelly on the ground as the tail begins to gain flight speed but before the rudders are really effective, too.
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jon. The D18 is a difficult tail dragger to handle on a slow, scale takeoff for sure. The extra rudder throw really helps, and you really have to be on it right from the start. As they say in full scale "Happy Feet" - back and forth the whole time. I use that movement instantly as I'm throttling up, and intuitively you can see the effect the movements are having as the tail wiggles side to side under your control. Essentially you are causing all the movement rather than seeing what it does and responding to it. Its incredibly hard to try and just react to what its doing without getting behind it. I have had worse though. I owned a Fokker DR1 that was a total $hit $how to take off and land without it ending up on its back...Lol.

Thanks very much Travis! I love scale flying and I work hard trying to perfect my rudder skills. The part of our review where we get more rudder throw is key. It really helps to have enough deflection/authority to keep it squared away. It is a difficult tail dragger to handle on a slow, scale takeoff.

I flew mine with the BNF AR631 receiver, and wasn't crazy about the differential thrust. I'm sure 90%+ will love it, but I didn't. I put in a Lemon Stabilized receiver, and have loved every second of flying this plane with stabilization, but no differential thrust. What an awesome release from E-flite...my favorite so far!

@@ModelAV8RChannel I do have one additional question, if I could ask. With a smart spektrum radio, with forward programming, can one turn off the differential thrust with a switch? And, if so, is that possible with both the bnf and rtf?
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel Жыл бұрын
I don't think you can on the D18 with forward programming (you can with the Twimber and EC-1500). You can use the Spektrum programmer to turn it off or adjust it, but you can't assign it to a switch. On the PNP having Forward programming would be determined by weather or not you use a compatible RX. You can adjust the ESC's with the Spektrum programmer no matter the RX.

That was nice to watch. Got mine built but haven’t recovered from retinal surgery enough to fly yet so I’m living vicariously. I will say my rudders were way out of sync out of the box, my right vertical stab wasn’t completely glued in and my right wing outer section quick connector wasn’t glued all the way in. Using a smart esc programming box was how I turned on thrust reverse and I did see an option for differential thrust (set at 15%) I supposed only smart receivers would send other channel information to the esc allowing that mix to happen.

Great review Adam! Really appreciate and enjoy the channel. I have just ordered the Beech 18 from HH. She will be here next week sometime. I'm up near Minneapolis, MN and we have a lot of snow right now. I have been flying most of my planes with floats, and landing on the snow, which has been some great fun. I would really like to install floats on this Beech 18. I have some ideas, but was wondering what your thoughts are on floats for this plane. How would you do it, if you were tasked with installing floats on this plane? I was thinking, dry wall anchors. Using float gear that attaches very similarly to the way the FMS Beaver 2.0m floats attach, (not as big of course). Glue in, and countersink the anchors, then just use the self tapping screws that the anchors come with to attach the gear. That way you could easily remove the floats when you want to go back to the original retractable gear. Do you think that would work? Thanks for any thoughts, or other ideas! Keep up the great work! -Mike

Hey Mike thank you man! Really appreciate the kind words. What you're describing sounds like it would work, but the anchors may need ply added to go in to. Not sure just foam would be enough. You might want to check out the RC Groups thread on this plane. I haven't checked it in a while, but there were guys talking about adding floats...someone may have done it by now and you could get some ideas there.

Great video Adam and nice flying. The added rudder throw seems to really help. I was thinking about moving my rod out on the servo end, Honestly i didn't even notice the extra holes on the bell crank end of the hook up... Glad to see you corrected yourself on the AR620. Whole video i was saying yes it is smart.. I use them in everything I fly cause they are Smart. Guess you have missed that in my videos. Also you CAN NOT use forward programming as of right now to change or turn off the Diff. thrust.. You Must have the Spektrum Programmer box. I used mine to enable the Reverse thrust just because I can ha ha. If you decide to do that.. make sure you do both sides of the esc..

Thanks Chris really appreciate it man. It is a great plane. Funny thing is...almost everybody has the BNF and none of that is a concern for them. You are right about the forward programming, but they intend to change that soon according to HH. Also when the 620's first came out they were not Smart...the Smart/SRXL2 was added later. I didn't bother to check on that (never thought to actually), and I have some older ones that are not SMART. I remember when they came out...I was working at the Hobby Shop, and SMART wasn't invented yet. That tech came out later.

Loved this, BUT... His conclusion that the diff thrust will work with ANY RX is wrong.... I need independent confirmation on this. Early on in the vid he mentioned that he was using a AR620 in this model. While the AR620 does not have AS3X or SAFE, it DOES have a "Data" connection that is accessed thru... You got it... The throttle channel... And since the Data port is using the SRXL2 protocol rudder commands are available to the ESC, which is where the DIff thrust magic is happening.... Just checked the HH/Spek site and Yes the AR620 is a SMART RX.... Gonna make the rudder linkage mod in about the next 30 mins... Huge thumbs up for this... Really, really liked this vid, and lovin the plane. I especially appreciate that he focused on the "Airframe" what is the airframe capable of, independent of what the electronics are doing. I like your Review I have the airplane and would agree with most of your observations. I purchased the bind and fly Version. Especially your underlining the takeoff end the ability to make it look scale so very true. I like to add reading the manual really careful The section around the throttle and the trim of the throttle helps with that too. It’s just a couple of sentences but they contain very Porten information

@@ModelAV8RChannel hey Adam and Heidi. We are on the mend extremely slowly but surely. The devastation down here is unimaginable. I couldn't even begin to explain. Today was the first day Emily and I could get to the beach were our place of work was located. An incredibly sad sight to see as we really loved working there. I'm not sure if I have even come out of shock yet. Every day since the storm has felt like one big long day but we are doing our best to stay positive and strong. People like you and Heidi are an enormous help. A huge thank you from all of us here at the Just Enough RC house for your help and support. Hey Adam, I received my Beech 18 and I have kind of a noob question, I was hoping you might be able to answer. How do you get the wheels off? I have the DuBro low bounce wheels for it. I wanted to install them, but I don't see how to get the stock wheels off. I didn't want to break anything so I didn't try pulling too hard. There is nothing in the instructions about it either. Thanks for any advice, I appreciate your time!

Hey Mike. I haven't replaced my tires so didn't know but I just went to the shop and figured it out. It's kind of a pain, lol. There is a seam on the lower strut cover. You put your hobby knife in that seam and pry the two halves apart. You can then take them off and get the wheel off. You either glue them back together or you can wrap clear tape around them. If you glue them, only use a tiny amount in a few places. That way you can get them off again later if you have to. You may want to check out the RC groups thread on it. I think a few guys have come up with different oleo struts to use. One other option to consider... It takes a bit of practice to get used to, but it can be greased in without different tires. There are some that think you have to have the low bounce wheels not to bounce, but if you land it right it won't bounce even with the stock tires. Anyway hope this helps!

How can the ESC do differential thrust without a rudder signal?

The AR620 IS a smart rx as it turns out. The esc recognizes it and mixes the rudder to throttles. It won't work with other protocols.

Adam, so my understanding is that the sub trim had an adverse effect because the rudder ties into the differential thrust in some way. My question is, in general do you advise against correcting an offset surface using sub trim? If so, why?
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 8 ай бұрын
Using sub trim can affect the absolute travel at one of the endpoints, and that can have a small affect on servo resolution. That said, with the surface deflection on most planes we are no where near the absolute travel of the servo. Even at 100% travel in the TX we still are not close. The servo has the potential to go a good bit further. Also, with most planes...and the way most people fly them...we are no where near asking the servo to use all its torque. So, basically the servo has travel and torque to spare in most cases, and this is why in most cases using sub trim isn't a big deal. That said, for my piece of mind I still don't use tons of it. If the number is starting to get big on the sub trim (like over 45 to 50) I'll just mechanically adjust it to center so I don't need so much. Now, all that said with some turbine and 3D applications...the servos are being challenged close to or at their maximum capability. In these cases, no sub trim at all, get all the servo resolution you can get.

Dear friend, i today finished one of these planes, but surprisingly it has problems whit noisy servos. I am disappointed never espect issues whit this brand
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 7 ай бұрын
Noisy Servos? Well, they are digital, which means they will constantly be keeping themselves centered. Also it has a gyro, so as you move it around the servos will make corrections. Also, if you have a surface in a bind the servos will try to center it, so make sure the surfaces move free and easy.

Why not just remove the servo horn and adjust the rudder like that ?
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 2 жыл бұрын
The rudder servo has two rudders and a tail wheel to deal with. You want to give the servo the best mechanical advantage you can, so the closer you can get the pushrod to the output shaft, the easier on the servo it will be. Its already in the middle of the servo arm, we didn't want to go further out. These are not super strong, expensive servos like you'd outfit a 3D plane with. This way, we give the servo some advantage, and still get the throw we want. Also, If you're talking about moving the clevis in on the rudder control horns...there isn't one. Its a single ball link attached to each rudder. No adjustment there possible.
@ianreed4636
@ianreed4636 2 жыл бұрын
@@ModelAV8RChannel I was saying to just pull the servo horn and use it to turn and adjust the rudder not to move it on the horn . So then you don't have to remove the whole tail .
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 2 жыл бұрын
@ian reed Ian watch that part of the video again bud. No, that would not work. The pushrod from the servo is attached to a bell crank that moves the tail wheel. Another short pushrod is attached to that and moves the rudders. We changed several things about the placement and shape of both pushrods to achieve more rudder throw. The tail section has to be removed to do that and make centering adjustments. It is all explained in depth in the episode.
