Here is my review of the E-flite Habu SS 70mm EDF jet. This is the same aerodynamic design as the Habu STS but the power systems allows up to 6s power which means more performance. :) The assembly is quick and simply and the airplane really flies great! Sweet EDF plane! Few points to note for others that I found on the near identical Habu STS RTF version: (1) Make sure the wing hard-points in the body for the wing screws is properly glued into place - mine were but other folks found this was a problem (missing glue - QC issue) and glued them back themselves. (2) You may need to trim the front wheel control horn back a bit to keep it from contacting the plastic housing that holds the servo or it will bind/catch and not work right. HH should use a shorter control horn or just trim it back at the factory (They may have done this for the SS). (3) Other who fly this plane on grass field have noted grass debris getting sucked into the fan intake and causing real problems - check it often and keep it cleaned out if dirty. Happy flying!

Hey Chris, quick question bud... I plan on using a CC 10Amp BEC instead of a second battery., I have set it up at a max voltage of 7.2 volts out tied into the main battery leads., via CC software... My question is though, when I plan on setting up thrust reverse for the jet, does or would your center burner/after burner get tricked out or glitched or hopefully not shorted out, by reversing the motor? Just would like to understand better about your product is all... All of your help is much appreciated.. and Thank you

Honestly, I’m not certain regarding the motor reverse using the bec. My guess is that it would probably be ok, but I can’t say definitively. In all honesty, I’d recommend using a 2s 250mah pack (motion rc has them). The weight and size isn’t much different than the castle bec.

Yes. All of the eflite bnf models have safe which provide the auto leveling capability of selected.

There’s enough spare channels to do both. Plus, my v2 centerburner is compatible with Smart telemetry, so you can use a yharness on the throttle. 😁

Another great video Chris. I enjoy the fact that your reviews are honest and straight forward. So I picked this plane up when on sale a while ago and have yet to fly it. If you’re an experienced flyer, you’ll probably do fine with either one. So I’d say, go for whichever you’re most comfortable flying first. 😊

Yeah, pretty much. It has safe and AS3X the same as the sts.

We got your mini burner today for the Habu SS! Thanks! Now, before installing it together with the help of a friend, do I need a seperate 1S or 2S LiPo for it or can I get the power from the main battery? (Currently I only use 4S 3200 30C smart packs for this plane). Thanks!

So glad it arrived safe and sound! The burner does need a small 2s lipo for operation. I use a 2s 250mah for all my airplanes which is perfect. It’s compact and lightweight so can be placed anywhere and lasts many flight outings on a single charge.

Sir, once again, thank you for all the great videos and information. I am ready to purchase this Habu; I do have a question you might be able to help me with. The AR631 receiver that comes in the BNF SS version - is it an "open-stock" 631, or is it a proprietary "locked" 631? I wish to do my own forward programming. Thank you!

Thank you! The receiver that comes with it is technically locked I believe, but I think you can factory reset it to program it however you want.

Just got mines and I'm having a serious problem with high voltage warning fresh battery pack I've done all I know to do and I keep getting the warning

What’s the warning specifically? When you plug in a freshly charged pack it warns too high voltage? You can adjust the max voltage in the telemetry setup menu. Or you can just turn the warning off altogether.

@@Thercgeek fresh battery pack in on take off full throttle once in the air it gives me the warning then I back off to 75%, it stops if I stay on full throttle for any length of time it starts to pulsate then so I back all the way down and then give it throttle and it stops pulsating I have calibrated my AC the warning is gone but now I still have a pulsating problem

Oh, interesting. Sounds like the battery is dropping considerable voltage. Is the battery cold? What’s the capacity and c rating? You may want to look at the voltage cutoff in the esc menu also.

It’s a good bird for sure and would be a great option. With your experience though, you might have more fun with the 70mm viper given it has flaps and retracts. That’s always my go to recommendation for a first jet.

I love speed when flying . I have v900 , v1200 all the timbers and several others . I want either viper 70mm or habu ss 70mm . What's your opinion on which one to get .

Between the two, I think the 70mm viper is the better way to go. Hard to beat the added fun with the retracts and flaps. 😊

Technically you can, but the motor is tuned for 6s and so on half the voltage (3s), the performance will suffer quite a bit and probably be less than the sts version if I had to guess.

The STS has a higher KV motor so if you want to fly 3S or 4S go with the STS.

Hey after you weather your planes do you clear coat with original decals on. I bought the t45 freewing version 2 and wanted to weather it and add couple stripes to Match the tigers ones. But wasn’t sure if I just clear coat over the original decals. I know it’s a long dumb question. Thanks

Great video!! I have q question: that plane comes I believe the AR631 wich it requires a DSMX or DSM2 transmitter. Would a JR X9503 work? The transmitter is DSM and I have found mixed reviews. Some people says it will work without any issues, but other people says it won't. I contacted HH and the answer was literally that they haven't tested because they don't support that radio anymore. Thank you so much for your time.

Hmmm, I’m not sure. I know at one time they were compatible since jr was building spektrum for a time. However, I think they have diverged quite a bit in the last number of years. So, I’m guessing it’s a long shot that it may work with that receiver.

The nx10 is a good rig. You can always keep the stuff you have on the jr and then just start setting up the new stuff on the new radio. Unless you only want to deal with one radio system. I have up to 3 radios that I use at any given time. generally I just bounce between the nx10 and the ix20 mostly, but have a dx8 on reserve if I need it.

Nice flying but the assembly part was not very helpful. Horizon Hobby did not include assembly instructions with this kit, the wires do not have labels for the receiver like freewing planes have for throttle, aileron, elevator, rudder and thrust reverser. The only moving part connector is for the rudder but even that you left what holes to put it on in the video.

This was a bnf model, so most everything was plugged into the receiver if I recall correctly (it’s been a long time). If you have a servo tester, I’d recommend simply checking each of the leads with that to determine to which surfaces they go. If you don’t have that, then simply plug them one by one into a single channel in your receiver and that’ll tell you also. I’m not sure why there weren’t instructions, there should have been. Thanks for the videos. I have been following yours, and others about the habu ss. I have a quick question. I modified mine by installing a new 8 channel reciever and programmed in fkaoerons and crow( spoilers) all that seemed to work fine on the bench. I programmed in safe and esc stuff and still on the bench, all seemed fine. I took it out to the field today and on a 4s 50c 3700 lipo, it wouldn't take iff, not enough power( speed) any idea what would cause that?? I brought it home and stuck in a 6s just to see and it had of course way more power, but it's suppossed to run on the 4s right?? I have two, brand new Zeem 4s 50c 3700 liposuction. Wouldn't fly with either.... Ed

Well, The habu ss is intended for 6s. I wouldn’t expect much performance from 4s. It’s the sts that is intended for 4s.

Question, I like this for a 1st EDF, but aside from the telemetry does the ESC have a menu to assign a reverse thrust to an open or available channel and switch -- I use a Spectrum NX8. I have reverse thrust on both my EF T-28 1.2m Trojan and Commander 1.4m mPd both assign ed to channel 7. This Habus SS 70mm running on a 6S seems like a good trainer (no flaps needed) for stepping up to a Viper 90mm or F-16 80mm?

I believe that you should be able to assign reverse thrust to a spare channel. It’s a function within the avian esc’s as a whole.
