Had a blast putting some cycles through the new E-Flite Timber! This video has some acro (hovering, torque rolls, rolling circles, knifedge), as well as STOL flying (landing in a super confined area).
My set-up isn't fully stock. I have made two changes. The first is that I use an APC 12x6E prop. This prop truly increases the power-to-weight but does definitely put a load on the electronics, so flight time is down to about 5-6 minutes. The second primary mod was taking out the AS3X receiver (this receiver actually limits the travel on the ailerons). I also did a couple other minor mods. The first I did was I put some extra Multiplex Fun Cub tires on. My stock wheels were coming off the tires and were super off-balance so I just put the multiplex ones on and she was good to go. The final minor mod was moving all the control arm attachments to the points that would give me the most travel, mechanically (closest in on the control surface, furthest out on the servos). I did not use expo on this set up at the time as that's what I was used to.
I use a 3s 2200mah 50C battery.
Overall, I am super happy with the Timber.
Pros:
-Excellent 3D capability
-Great STOL capability, minor wing wag present but easy to deal with
-Landing gear system was designed very well
-Awesome aileron and flap concealed servo installation
-Slats do indeed have positive effect on reducing separation and maintaining laminar flow over wing at high angles of attack and low airspeeds
Cons:
-Aileron roll rate is very lethargic (if 3D is your primary cup of tea)
-Battery life is below industry average, even with stock 12x4 prop (about 6-7 minutes)
-Stock wheels came off tires after continual use
-Slats are fragile
-Really wish the battery hatch was on top. Can be a pain to replace battery as one person without a cradle
Overall, I'd highly recommend picking one up!

Thanks man! Yeah, that 12x6 makes a huge difference, but again, the plane is just too heavy so I can't get good flight times on it. If it weighed 1/2 a pound less, you could use a 480 motor on a 12x6 an get nicer flight times and same performance. Weight is everything!

Hey Mate! Very skillful flying! Respect! In the video you see, that the Timber is a bit more heavier in comparison to the MPX Funcub... The Timber needs more speed for slow flying... The Funcub is more agile I think... But I like the Timbers landing gear... I looks more solid... The hard drops on the ground after Torque Roll would kill the Funcubs Prop for sure. But it seems that you have a lot of fun with this plane ;-) I'm wondering, that the stock motor has so much power!

When you did that full throttle, hit the wall hover, did you just jam the elevator back and lower throttle until it was hovering under the prop? I got MAD questions as I’m just getting back into the hobby after being out about 25 years -36 now. 3D flying was pretty limited in the late 80s and early 90s. I mean, yeah we did knife edges, rolls, etc, but some of this 3D is NUTS!!
@RedDevilSquadron
@RedDevilSquadron 5 жыл бұрын
Ross Fallacaro Are you referring to the on the ground stopped to full throttle, takeoff, and hover? If so, the trick is to start the takeoff roll with full flaps which will raise the nose much quicker with power in, and then the second the plane is almost vertical, suck the flaps up.

Great flying. I've practised quite a bit with Realflight 7.5 simulator and was hoping to bypass the "pure trainer" plane and go straight to this one as it seems very able to fly slowly and also do some aerobatics. Is this a viable approach, or is a pure trainer "a must"?

You must of got a hot motor and esc from factory if it's stock. Unless your running 4s. Because I have flown plenty of 3d and my timber is alittle shy of maintaining on the recommended 3s
@RedDevilSquadron
@RedDevilSquadron 5 жыл бұрын
Ricky Woods no sir. Warm, yes. Not hot. I’ve put hundreds of cycles on this set up. 3s, stock motor and esc, and a 12x6 prop. The stock prop is a 12x4, with barely enough pull to hover even at full throttle. The extra 2 inches of pitch helps a ton. It’s not quite 2:1 thrust but it works for basic 3D.

Have you flown the Night Timber X, and if so, how does it compare to this plane?
@RedDevilSquadron
@RedDevilSquadron 3 жыл бұрын
I've owned and subsequently sold a Timber X. It's too heavy to do what they designed it to do. Not light enough for 3D and too heavy for STOL as well. Even the regular Turbo Timber is a bit heavy too (RIP OG Fun Cub for the proper low wing loading) but it's the best out there as of now unless the OG FunCub comes back from the ashes.
@jdouglasj2000
@jdouglasj2000 3 жыл бұрын
@@RedDevilSquadron Someone on RCGroups said he put a TT wing on his Night Timber X and now it STOLs as well as a TT. But I think he said the weight on his Franken-Timber is the same as it was for his NTX even though he has a lot more wing area. Above you said the NTX was too heavy. But I thought the TT and the NTX had nearly the same fuselage. Can you tell me what accounts for the extra weight? I haven't had a chance to fly my NTX wiht the TT wing. Do you think this will work? I could always send the wing back and just order a TT, although I'd prefer the Franken-Timber if it'll fly like a TT.

@@jdouglasj2000 They're similar if not same in terms of weight, 1.5m timbers have 559 instead of 523 square inches of wing area in a longer wing, which leads to better stol capabilities. No 3d or stol expert would recommend a night or day timber x.

Would you say it's more fun than the Funcub or is about the same except made by a different brand?
@RedDevilSquadron
@RedDevilSquadron 8 жыл бұрын
If I were to give an honest answer, the Fun Cub is a much better flying airplane. The biggest reason is it is MUCH lighter for the same size airframe. While the Timber has a much better designed landing gear system, both mains and tailwheel, there are a lot of parts that also are a lot more brittle. If I were to buy one of the two based off of ease of assembly and design of certain systems, I'd get the Timber. If I wanted a plane with really great power to weight, all around better flight characteristics, and light(er) wing loading, I'd go with the Fun Cub.

Break 3Step I actually am able to hover it stock. It just doesn't pull out as well. The only change I made was making it a 12x6 prop rather than 12x4

are you using recommended CG or did you move it around?
@RedDevilSquadron
@RedDevilSquadron 8 жыл бұрын
Michael Casella Wherever the battery slides to within the confines of the hatch :-P These airplanes are designed with a loss of Velcro in flight in mind. The CG is super tolerant of those limits. I never Velcro or hard mount the battery in this plane or my Funcub.

Where did you set the CG?
@RedDevilSquadron
@RedDevilSquadron 3 жыл бұрын
In all Timbers - they fly best simply ignoring the velcro straps and sliding the battery as far back as it will go. I've never had one slide forward as the thickness of the recommended batteries is sufficient enough for it to pressure fit in the rear of the battery compartment. Cheers

Got it. I’m running a heavier 3s 5000mah and did just that. It put the CG dead on for the book. Right at 57oz for the weight I’m going to swap ESC to the Turbo timer one and run 4S with an APC 3 blade. That should get the PTWR where I want it. I’m still running the AS3X receiver. Will take your advice and go with a basic 6channel as well. I’m not planning on ringing it out like you do, but it would be nice to have the unlimited vertical and longer flight time with the 4S setup.

Dude, that’s f#@$& AWESOME flying, I just bought the Turbo Timber as my first plane. If I could do 1/10 of you did I’d be happy as hell. One question, how long did it take for you to learn to hover like that? And how do I learn on my own to hover? (O.k. 2 questions). Thanks for that video, really great flying.

Thanks much! Best advice I ever got (when gas was more prevalant): buy 50 gallons of gasoline and fly it till it's dry. Just repetition. Simulators are great too. Comes with time...I absolutely have my fair share of crashes from learning and continue to crash when I try new things too haha. Don't ever let anyone tell you they think they've learned it all. If you're not crashing, you aren't learning

Sorry, forgot to open the whole page by clicking on "more". I have 2 XOAR 12x6 wooden props, those might be fine. Batteries are Hacker 3S 2400 mAh 30 C. Should work.My finger just clicked the order button :-)

I'll be honest unlike some I've seen online and say I've never flown the Tundra so I couldn't tell you. I still think the FunCub is the best in this class of R/C.
