MGR ൻ്റെ അവസാന ചിത്രം 1978 ഡിസംബർ 1ന് ഇറങ്ങിയ മധുരൈ മീട്ട സുന്ദര പാണ്ഡ്യൻ ആണ്. അതുപോലെ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ആയ ശേഷം സിനിമയിൽ നിന്ന് താത്ക്കാലികമായി വിരമിക്കുകയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ചെയ്തത്. പിന്നീട് 1980 ലോക്സഭാ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ പാർട്ടി തകർന്നടിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ തൻ്റെ ഇമേജ് വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഒന്ന് രണ്ട് ചിത്രങ്ങൾക്ക് പദ്ധതിയിട്ടെങ്കിലും അവ മുടങ്ങി.. 1990 ൽ ഭാഗ്യരാജ് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത് പ്രധാന റോളിൽ അഭിനയിച്ച അവസര പോലീസ് 100 എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിൽ MGR അഭിനയിച്ച് പൂർത്തീകരിക്കാതിരുന്ന ഒരു പഴയ ചിത്രത്തിൻ്റെ ഏതാനും ഭാഗങ്ങൾ കഥയ്ക്ക് അനുയോജ്യമായ രീതിയിൽ ചേർന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്.
