If you have no experience with modes, a nice introductory exercise is to learn the given scale along a single string and use that to improvise. It will help train your ear to the sound of the mode as well as help you appreciate the intervallic formula. (A lot of this is explored in much further depth in Mick Goodrick's book "The Advancing Guitarist")
