@catholictruth102 knowing the apostles is nothing like learning from and living with Christ! Seeing the miracles and writing about Christ's life firsthand can not be compared to writing about the apostles' experiences. The Bible is the Word of God. I think I am still going to go with Logos. I do want all of the various different commentaries, lexicon, audio Bible, the whole nine yards. And I want them to be digitally searchable. If I want to look up a Greek word, I want to see how many times that appears in the Bible. I want to type in John 1:1 and pull up all 15 commentaries and which the commentators talk about John 1:1, for example. Not to mention theology and apologetic books that are goid for just straight reading. I would consider myself a lay-scholar (A layperson who researches as in depth as a PH.D). I like to get deep in the weeds. That said, I think E-Sword is great if you only want the basics. Thanks for the video. 🙂

One thing about Logos is purchasing the library. Logos has levels to purchase. If you have all the resources you need, then there is no more purchasing. You can also pick specific resources to purchase. Once you have purchased that resource, it is yours. Logos’s business model also has the ability to chop up payments to a degree. If you purchase a resource that is part of a package, the price of that package drops accordingly. So up front, it does cost some money however, that purchase drops off when you have what you need.

However, I am making the transition from MS Windows to a Linux OS. Windows 11 is now out and two of my laptops cannot run Win11. I have been running Linux for a several years and have now removed Win10 and added the Archlinux operating system. I knew of E-Sword and have followed the development of the software for a few years. I was pleasantly surprised that I can install E-Sword on Linux and have installed it on two laptops. WOW, this is great. I have been following your videos for a few days. Like you I've used e-sword for over 10 years but I have not used logos or any other bible program. I used one prior but it was a real dog and I don't even remember the name of it. I used to keep all my bible verse notes in an indexing word process program called Yeah Write (okay I confess I still do as a back up). I totally agree that a good hearty search tool and some basic tools like Strong's and Smiths are all anyone really needs to do quality bible study. But what I've loved about e-sword are two things. #1 a fantastic verse oriented study note tool. Over the past 20 years I've read hundreds of books, and done scores of bible studies, not to mention all my sermons and e-sword has allowed me to cross referencing them by verse which is important to me. If I preached or did a bible study on 1 Corinthians 13, I want to know what I was saying in the past. literally Second and enormously valuable to me are it's Topic Notes feature. First, there are tons of these resources available online but once I learned to set up my own I've gone to town. I've set up scores of Topic Notes. I'm sure others do stuff like this in a word processor the ability to indexed them right in e-sword works great for copying and pasting. I guess this is where some people want to keep their sermons, I'm more interested in having references close at hand. I've entered in the Revised Common Lectionary in a format I prefer so that I can reference it by the correct Sunday, I've created a Topic Note on Prayers that I've encountered and when I've used them, I have a Daily Office Topic note to tell me the readings for the current Book of Common Prayer Daily Office readings, I have hymns entered and indexed as I do sermon planning. This feature is so flexible and handy that I can't over state how great it is. All in a free program! A program that I'd bet other than a regular donation that I make when I update, I haven't spent $100 on in the last 10 years! I wish the support was a bit better, but the program is fantastic and I'm a die hard evangelistic user. Thanks for your review.

What a great review! This is a goos testimony of the huge potential available within e-Sword. I think this video should be VERY helpful for the hungry heart looking for help researching the Word of God. I initially purchased the Logos program back in 2002. After about 3-4 months I gave it away and started using E Sword. Simplicity was the issue, and E-sword gave me plenty of tools to work with. Now, a good 20 years later, literately hundreds of new volumes have been offered via E-Sword. Complete Sermons of Spurgeon, Lange's Complete Commentaries, many new Bibles and Dictionaries. etc. The nice thing about E-sword is that it offers Bibles in other languages. The resource's available for E-sword are vast, and if you outgrow the free modules they offer a limited selection of 'paid' modules that will not drain your bank account. Many author's will make their works available for digital copy for a small fee as compared to the charges for the a physical book...and lastly, e-sword is really easy to use.

It's true that the Logos packages have a lot of resources you don't want. The rule I use is add up the value of the resources in a package that you DO want. If the individual cost of those resources is greater than the cost package, then you're still getting a better value than buying them individually.
@timohanes2 жыл бұрын
I do something similar, but maybe a little more complex: I look at each resource in the package and evaluate, at what price point would I be willing to buy it. I add it up and compare to the price of the whole package.

I too, am an e-sword fan, and very conservative when it comes to commentaries: preferring pre-20th century works by believers. However, Logos has powerful lexicological tools such as word usage graphs, for people who are more linguistically talented. For ""boots on the ground" pastors and teachers, a solid TR based Bible, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and e-sword are all we need. Thanks for your honest video!😎👍🙏📖 FYI: The STEP Bible is very good and free as well.

Logos is expensive, but you can start with the free version and even something basic like fundamentals for around $60. You get a free book a month and a bonus book on your birthday. Later if you want to upgrade you can, and you only pay once. If you buy the latest version it is your for life. You then just have to purchase the feature upgrade if you want it, and that is usually every 2-3 years.

LOL Now days used book stores have them for less because everyone is getting rid of them for electronic programs!! Bible Gateway was a great FREE online with Tools, but now they are wanting money for the Tools and they have removed the Study aides, Tools, but still have the FREE Bible with many Versions for use. E-Sword another great FREE resource of Bible AND TOOLS! And YES, I too am a Pastor, Missionary, Minister of God's Word, and WE ALL NEED TO HANDLE THE WORD RIGHTLY WHEN WE STUDY TO KNOW HIM, AND SERVE IT TO OTHERS. NOT using other people [commentary writers] opinions, thereby promoting "another gospel" than what the Holy Spirit through the resurrection power of Jesus inspired His disciples to write. Keep it pure so you will be found pure before HIM.

Yes, so the PC windows version is totally free. The Mac version has a small cost. And the Apple app and Android app both cost a couple dollars. Not sure why, probably something to do with hosting. And, in my opinion, the couple dollars supports the developer who has made this available for free (or almost free) for years now.

Correction - Logos has a free full desktop and mobile app, as well as the web app. And the free app has all the core features. E.g., when you buy any book (or use any of the free books that are released every month), each book is fully integrated. You do have to license/pay for higher-end features. I would be very interested in an impartial, objective comparison of the free Logos vs. the free e-sword - without spending ANY money, what do you get in comparison.

Logos is incomparably better in every aspect: custom searches, resource synchronization. libraries, and more interestingly for me, as I am Brazilian, the entire application is in my language and also a large number of books. Another difference is that version 10 of Logos already comes with a translator, and even though there are books in several languages, I can read them in Portuguese! For all this set of features, I consider Logos to be incomparably better! The only point to take into consideration is price - it is a very high investment. But, if you were to buy all the content individually, it would be much more expensive!

Very understandable points brother. My goal when I made this video was to show young Bible students that you don't NEED (key word) to spend a bunch of money to start studying the Bible. Yes, Logos is VEEEEEEEEEERY expensive but is BY FAR WAY SUPERIOR IN EVERY WAY to e-Sword! I don't work for Logos! If you don't have the money you literally can't have Logos, SILVER is $800 and PLATINUM $1,720. I'm not criticizing but (as a developer myself) software development costs a bunch of money but if you think about it, BIBLE COLLEGE costs WAY more! and chances are you will never have access to the material Logos is giving you! 😉
@kalehorvathmedia3 жыл бұрын
Good points! And I totally understand where you are coming from with this. Sure, it is superior in the amount of resources it provides. I'm not arguing that. Also, I completely agree that you should pay for things that were developed by skilled people. My father is an auto mechanic, and has often told me that he has spent countless thousands of dollars on his tools. But, his tools are what allow him to make a living. So it's not wrong to invest financially in the tools of your trade. I have hundreds of books on my shelves myself, and graduated from a local Bible college through my church. But, I would also posit that a good Bible will cost you $50-$100, and e-sword and work-ethic are free. If you are a vocational pastor and want to invest in your study tools, by all means do that. You will in one way or another. But nobody NEEDS (that's the point) this software to study to show themselves approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. :)

Have come to this one very late but Olive Tree often goes under the radar when discussing bible software. I have the basic Logos which is fiddly if you dont want to spend time learning how to use it. OT on the other hand is much morr pleasant visually and wins hands down on mobile devices. Desk top version of OT is ok but not as sophisticated as Logos, Accordance etc. There is no automatic or easy click function in OT to create morr than two window views. You have to open a resource is a new window then manually resize and place these windows in your preferred layout. These a separate to your main view so you when you click on main window your new layout disappears. You have to select the new window view to go back to it. Also, you cant save these layouts. It’s somewhat dated now and lagging behind all others in this item of functionality. That said, its still the most pleasurable viewing experience in my opinion and its free, although you do pay for the products.

In regards to your comments about e-Sword having a traditional interface. In my mind that is a big plus, for the reasons you enumerated, and more. I have Logos, and while it is a powerful and even awesome program, I find the design clunky and non-intuitive. What happened to the old days when there was a menu with the many functions on drop down lists. Now, with the modern interfaces, all you have is a bunch of random symbols, where you have to hunt all over to find a function. These modern interfaces are terrible, and the standard menu interface is far superior. Well, the ribbon in Microsoft Word is OK, but Logos is nothing like that, its just a hodgepodge of unintuitive design elements. But once you do learn some of the ins and outs of Logos, it is a extremely powerful program, although very expensive if you build up much of a library.

You are partially right. It is true that Logos can cost a lot of money. But, still, you decide how much (if any) money you want to invest. Second, the moment you want to go deeper into the Bible, Logos gives you MUCH more information. E-Sword tells you the Strong's numbers but there is no analysis of the grammar. Logos gives you both (for the OT and the NT) and more. Bottom line: it depends on how deep you want to dig. For me, E-Sword is fine for any Christian. But for preachers, theologians and interested Christians, I suggest trying Logos - you might find it more helpful. It's worth the time (there are short videos that will give you an idea what you'll get).

His bias is obvious, he uses one software exclusively, so of course he prefers it. I just want to address a logical fallacy: The video is a bit like comparing a bicycle to a car. I can give you 5 reasons why you don’t need a car. 1) They are very expensive. 2)You live in a city where your work, schools and stores are all close by. 3) There is good public transit for things farther away. 4) There are many added expenses to owning a car, and 5) Riding a bicycle is better for your health that riding in a car. Many people would say, ‘That’s fine for your needs, but my needs are different.’ I assume for nearly all people who do serious Bible study, they want to build a library, and for that you need to purchase books. In Logos you do NOT need to purchase any program features. You can get the free version for both computer and devices, and only buy books. Therefore, BOTH E-SWORD AND LOGOS ARE ABSOLUTELY FREE. I used to have two rooms of library when I lived overseas. When I moved, I decided to go digital. (There are pros and cons to both, so that’s not worth arguing, only evaluating) Now I can access all my library on my phone AND my laptop AND my iPad, wherever I am. Yes, ebooks are expensive, but so are paper books. If you use ESword and buy a bunch of paper books, you aren’t coming out ahead financially. Books are tools, and what tools you need depends on whether you are an amateur, a hobbyist, or a professional. You just have to answer the question for yourself, Do you have simple ‘bicycle’ Bible study needs, or more powerful ‘automobile’ Bible study needs? E-Sword IS great, but so is Logos!

So you admittedly did say you have a bias here and I believe that shows. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't believe you NEED Logos nor eSword. But, I don't think you characterized Logos in the most appropriate way possible. As this was mostly a "I recommend eSword because I don't understand Logos and it cost money", which is fine. And I agree that a lot of pastors or shepherds what have you can't afford the bigger packages in Logos. And I've actually taken the last like 4 hours to learn what Logos is, the different plans, how to use it, etc. And the biggest thing about Logos you didn't really point out is the library. Yes it's good for traditional Bible study like eSword. But it's power is in the library is where the power is. Cause you spend $300 on a high ish end plan, yet get the value of $3,000. And I just don't think you fully understand that, hence your aversion to it. I'm not trying to be argumentative just for the sake of it. But just saying as you said this is a very biased video. And I do agree for less tech savy people eSword is likely better. But I think what Logos is doing is not only appealing to the newer generation; but allowing Pastors and people in ministry to go deeper faster and cheaper than ever before. For a stand alone quick Bible Study, sure eSword is great. But the power of Logos is so much more than just that.

There is no comparison for serious, in-depth Bible and original language study. Logos is simply the best!!! E-sword is not even in the same camp. You really need to use Logos before you begin to compare how “cluttered” it is. Logos, when you first run it, always opens to the “homepage,” but continued usage would have yielded the information that you can use workspaces. Logos is powerful, simple to use and is the best. For exegesis and original language study, it is the pms e to go.

Since you said you haven't used Logos in-depth, here's an analogy. All you need is a $20 USB microphone to record your God-given voice effectively, but I see you are using a $400 microphone, which requires an additional cost on the interface to make it work. Why do you invest in this expansive setup? The answer is the same as why you want Logos. I've used Logos since 1994, while still in seminary. They came in a set of 5 floppy disks. Over the years, I've tried other Bible software due to the cost, but nothing came close. Now, I believe I have more than recovered the cost by the time I saved, the knowledge I gained, and the additional souls I harvested. You are right, you don't need Logos unless you see the value for your ministry. God bless!
@kalehorvathmedia3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like Logos Sam. There's nothing wrong with investing in our tools. Passive aggressiveness aside, I think your analogy is a poor one. My mid-level microphone and budget level interface are not of equal value in comparison to the top-of-the-line cost of Logos in the Bible software world. Certainly not an "expansive setup". Perhaps if I had a professional studio with a $2,000 microphone and pro gear this would make more sense. Did you watch the entire video? My point was that I only require a few specific resources to study the scripture, all of which are available for free. Many people don't even know that you can access these materials for free. And, as I said at the end of the video, it is totally fine if people would rather use Logos. But as a pastor, I have seen people wrestle with spending money they don't have to buy Logos because they think that can't truly study the Bible without it. And that is just not the case.

As someone who has had E-Sword, theWord, Wordsearch, and currently has Quickverse, Swordsearcher, Accordance, and Logos, I can honestly say E-Sword cannot compare to Logos. What research I can do in ten seconds in Logos would takes weeks in E-sword. I can type John 6:44 in the go-box and it will tell me what everything in my library (4,400 books) says about that verse, including timeline, Bible background, and corresponding verses elsewhere. That takes ten seconds. Go through the Logos training videos and you'll see by the end of them that E-Sword can't compare. After all, E-sword is a more reliable version of Quickverse, which I still use. Logos actually sells (at a very low price) digital versions of the oldest manuscript fragments of the New Testament, like P46 etc. It's mind blowing what we can do today with a computer and Logos or Accordance. I cannot imagine with Calvin or Edwards could have done if they had today's technology. Take the time to do the research. I learned more my first month using Logos than I did in four years of seminary.
@kalehorvathmedia2 жыл бұрын
I'm curious if you actually watched this whole video, because you're proving my point. I literally said, in this video, that the reason Logos is expensive is because you are paying for thousands of digital resources... and if that is what you want, then get Logos! Obviously, if you purchased 4,400 physical books that would be expensive. And, being able to search them all instantly is a great resource. But do I NEED (that's the key word here my guy) 10,000 resources to study the Bible? No, I do not. Are they beneficial for someone who can afford them? Of course! But don't knock the guys who aren't lining the pockets of all these huge book publishers, because all they need is a Bible, the Holy Spirt, a concordance, and a TSK to rightly divide the scripture.

@@kalehorvathmedia I agree. I think for every ordinary simple Christian out there, even including Pastors and Christian teachers and catechists, e-Sword is already more than sufficient enough for excellent Bible study and devotion. Logos is more of only for scholars, theologians, and academicians who want to dig deeper into the many facets of Bible scholarship and exegesis, or even for lay people who just love doing with the Holy Bible what those scholars, academicians, and theologians love to do. So I agree with the points that you present in your videos. I am an ordinary Filipino Christian, and I have both e-Sword and Logos for many years now, in my home laptop and office desktop. Logos I rarely use, because it is very clunky, heavy on the system, slow, somewhat unstable, and complicated to use. E-Sword is the opposite: it is very simple to use, very user and ergonomics friendly, very light on the system, very stable, and very fast as well, with simple direct features and resources that are intuitive. These are the reasons why e-Sword has been and is my home, really, when it comes to Bible study and devotion through these years. Honestly, e-sword is nice. However, most of the free material is outdated. Commentaries do not address current theological issues (how to respond to theological arguments that did not show up 100 years ago), Greek material and grammars at too old to be reliable, Strong Dictionary is all but a dictionary, it is just a log of how the King James Version had translated the Greek words in English... and since, we have found thousands of better meanings to Greek (and Hebrew) words through the many papiri found during the last 150 years. So yes, e-sword is good, but in order to be relevant you need to buy products that are e-sword compatible.... otherwise, preachers will quote material from these public domain books that are often no longer true or relevant. And at the end, the paid products in e-sword can also make this app very expensive.

@@kalehorvathmedia of course just the Bible. But this is is not what the video is about only. You talk about the tons of material within e-sword.... the is what I'm referring to as well. The Bible is always relevant. I preach it every week in church. But at the same time, although there are many great tools available for free in e-sword, even the maker of e-sword knows that they are limited and often totally outdated. The is why they also offer paid modules. Let me give you a simple exemple. Thayer's Greek dictionary not only is outdated, but it was so from on its inception. At the moment it was published, scholars published their discoveries of thousands of manuscripts that gave new light to many words in Greek. Therfore new dictionaries where written. E-sword, therfore sells the highly acclaimed and relevant: A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature And if you buy all the paid resources they offer, at the end, you end paying several thousand dollar, as well. In think that you should have said that in your video. Itv is good, but not ab objective comparison. Most of the public domain books offered by e-sword can be found elsewhere and at times in Logos. However, the cost for Logos is not due to these books, but to the enormous library of contemporary books they offer in their packages. Now, I totally agree with you that most of these books can be found in many preacher's bookshelves. I personally have about 3000 books on my shelves. And I would personally suggest Logos to create special packages with much less unnecessary resources and stick to the most essential ones. For instance., for Biblical languages, the most updated Hebrew and LXX texts for the Old Testament and Greek for the New Testament + some tools, dictionaries and parsing help should be more than sufficient and the cost would be contained under 500$. Anyway I was not trying to criticize your excellent video, I was trying to bring some adjustments that I believe are appropriate. Blessings

@@life-is-excellent8861 I understand what you mean. Each preacher must determine what tools he needs in his toolbox, but that is also determined by what he deems valuable in studying the scripture. Truthfully, this video was made in mind for the many laymen out there who feel like they must spend thousands of dollars to study their bible, which just isn't true. In fact, as a pastor, I've been studying and preaching the scripture for almost 10 years now with just my KJV bible, and the few resources mentioned. And I know I'm not the only one, as I'm friends with many of them, and many of them trained and discipled me. Sometimes people can rely too much on the tools for studying the Bible, and not enough on just the Bible itself. Comparing scripture with scripture, and letting God speak for himself. But, I see no reason to use a reconstructed pronunciation from the 16th century when you can just pronounce it the way Greek Christians do. And I see no reason to think that the pronunciation would have changed quite so much. We have the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom and the writings of the Greek Church Fathers that have been in continual use liturgically since the 5th century. I tend to think there's probably more stability reading in that form of pronunciation than to sort of guess that a European Catholic scribe got it right. Anyways; I agree with you. @@kalehorvathmedia Kale, you don't need to make snide remarks to defend your point. I do not see things the same way you do, but I have not resorted to these tactics to make a point. I believe your approach is simplistic, and KNOW that there are a multitude of things you can learn from resources you do not choose to use. I frankly do not buy your approach to Bible study using only the simplest of tools and thinking that somehow that is "good enough." Some of your statements about Logos are, to put it simply, misleading. If you don't want clutter all over your screen, you can choose to only open a Bible and read it full screen. Or you can choose to add a window that has access to a commentary, or any one of more than two dozen excellent tools that give access to better resources AND save time. Of course, if you believe that people who write commentaries are writing another gospel, there really is no point in trying to make an intelligent argument with you. Your attitude seems to be one of disdain for biblical scholarship. I think that is very unfortunate. You really do not know what you are missing. As to the costs, I've got a physical library that has somewhere between 3-4000 physical books. I would estimate the costs of those books has been well over $25,000. Multitudes of times as I went about sermon and/or lesson preparation, I used some of those resources and had eye opening learning that helped me understand some of the differences between our western culture and the times in which the scriptures were written. Those experiences have helped me provide my congregations and classes better understandings of what the biblical writers were addressing than I could have ever gotten with a Strong's concordance, as good as it is. I also have Logos 10 with all the bells & whistles and about 3050 digital books. I have been to the place where I could not afford any of the more sophisticated tools Logos has, nor much of it's library resources. I've used free Bible software, and took all the advantage of it I could. But, given the choice, I would not go back. Why? Simply because having learned to use the tools (yes, it takes TIME and EFFORT to learn how and why to use them) and resources Logos presents, I can present so much better a product from pulpits and classroom lecterns I may be called to occupy. I'm not here to denigrate E-sword or The Word or any of the other free tools out there. They have their place, are good and beneficial. However, the best they can do is not even in the same league with Logos. It is a different tool that has flexibility and study aids other tools just do not have. It's OK to advocate for E-sword or whatever free app you want to use. Congratulations for getting beyond the old methods of laying out a dozen books at the time and comparing them against each other. But you do not need to try make specious arguments against Logos in order to make your point. I think I would have appreciated a fair comparison, perhaps with charts featuring corresponding tools, liabilities, and assets with accurate representations of the abilities of both programs. Let the functions speak for themselves. I agree that there are some people who do not need the resources Logos 10 Platinum edition provides. Not every Christian needs a ThD. But for people who occupy pulpits and teach or preach, I think the issue is how far they want to carry their adherents. I have found I am not comfortable with just using simple tools when I have a host of others available. And, yes, Kale, I watched your entire video... Had you been in one of my classes on Bible Study Methodology, and presented this video as your project, I would have given you a "C" because your arguments were primarily one-sided, simplistic arguments and indicated a bias against Logos. Also, please know I would not have even written this had you not made the snide remarks in response to Kevin, above. I really wish you well, and encourage you to make better arguments when comparing products in the future... Blessings
