For those of us who saw this film as children in the theater in 1982 this soundtrack is musical poetry. Conjures up so many emotions and memories you can literally see every image play across your mind. Hands down one of the most beautiful scores ever conceived. John Williams has no equal.

JW's music emphasizes the sadness that E.T. and Elliott are feeling, but the music then goes on to illustrate that this is not really a goodbye. It has hope (that maybe E.T. will see Elliott again someday), promise (that E.T. will never truly leave Elliott through their link), and peace (even if they don't see each other again, neither character will ever be crippled by grief). The music helps to make sure the audience leaves realizing that this is a HAPPY ending for all. Well done JW!

Dude, this is really depressing. Someday John Williams will die. That day will be extremely sad. Every one of us has to go through it, but just the idea of us ever losing him is already horrible. I really wish I could prepare for it, to make it less painful, to wave him goodbye and try to accept it and move on, whenever it happens, but there's no preparing for it. We have to celebrate him while we still have him, he's an irreplaceable Treasure. More than National, or International, John Williams is a *Human Treasure.*

Even more: he's a Universal treasure. I'm sure even real ET's, far, far away, tucked in some lost corner of our immeasurable cosmos, will one day in the event of finding our species, even if long gone already, enjoy the marvellous remnants of it. Williams will never truly die...

I think the music played such strong role in ET. There's so much feel in a John Williams scorer regardless of the movie. I get instant goosebumps during the final 20 seconds of this track. So powerful and moving. A Williams score is so unique. More recently ive started listening to just the score and I'm hearing things I never did before. I notice so many similarities in every score he does. Despite that, every score is unique and original in it's own way. The day we lose John will be a very very sad day for film and music.

Sometime in late 1981 I saw an edition of 'Entertainment Tonight' where one of the bits was a 'check in' on Spielberg who was still riding high on the runaway success of 'Raiders' (which, as we often forget, salvaged his career after the beautifully produced but less than successful '1941'). There were some shots of him on the set of 'E.T.' and I distinctly remember the reporter referring to Spielberg being at work on "two smaller films" ('E.T' and 'Poltergeist'), which, at the time, was true (their shared cost was something like $25 million...and there was no guarantee either would be box office hits). It is this moment, reflective of our inability to accurately predict the effect certain films will have on cultures, that has stayed with me. Some 35+ years on, 'E.T's success seems impossible to disinvent, to dislodge from consciousness, a fait-accompli. So enraptured were some that upon its release it was suggested it might be the greatest movie ever made (which seems a little strange today...can ANY any film be given such an absolute superlative and shoulder such a burden?. And yet one thing is clear, that John Williams' score may be (one of the) greatest score(s) ever composed for a film and, if I may be so bold, that the final 6.5 minutes may be the greatest single piece of music ever composed for a film, for even if you don't care for Williams' style, even if you are a chilly and humourless academic (and trust me, I met plenty of 'em in film school), you cannot argue that it takes a genius of both composition and control to compose work such as this. Consider Williams' challenge: to underscore a protracted farewell scene that, if you analyze it, at least in terms of the plastics of the film, is fairly static. The dynamics are emotional ones and this is tricky territory: too little control and the scene collapses into the maudlin, too much restraint and you have stalled emotional ascension that betrays the build of the entire film. And there IS build in this music: there is build and build and build - but always cannily tempered by plateaux in between. I won't do a deep analysis here, only invite you to carefully consider the structure of this piece and sense how many times the emotionality is intensified and then marked by a pull-back. This is Williams at his most knowingly Wagnerian where, as a nod to the 'liebestod' from 'Tristan and Isolde", he braids all his motifs together in a slowly rising flow, pushing emotion to the point of excruciation but offering no release (hence the impulse to sob through most of the scene!) - at least until the penultimate moment of the brass fanfare. This is no big melodramatic hack work, but the creation of composer whose musical intelligence as it relates to the rhythms of film is a rare gift. Incredible. Absolutely incredible. The great Jerry Goldsmith might have been capable of this, and maybe Elmer Bernstein, but few others...and I can't imagine any of the young composers today possessing such mastery, no matter how admirable their talent. P.S. If you mute the sound and play the second part of the 'liebestod' from "T & I" over the visuals, you will be amazed at how well it works with the goodbye scene...and it clocks in at the exact length of this scene (gave or take a few seconds)...it's uncanny.
