HP Umpire Edwin Moscoso ejected Pirates pitcher Aroldis Chapman for arguing balls and strikes during his 8th inning appearance. The ejection occurred as Chapman approached Moscoso (with glove in front of face) after giving up a two-RBI double to New York's Harrison Bader. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2024/...

A few things: 1) the ump was pretty good here. Had that bad missed strike but everything else seemed correct. Chapman just seemed to take his frustration out on the ump. 2) While he deserved to be ejected, I don't understand what he did that merits a 2 game suspension. Seems excessive. 3) The catcher is over-framing. I see some catchers do this and it's not helping your case with the ump. If it's already in the zone, it's better to hold the glove still. I feel like it makes it harder for the ump to track the pitch when you move the glove so much.

0:29 Those are the stats for the 2-1 pitch. The 2-2 pitch had a pz of 1.67, which is still a strike. It's higher than the strike 3 pitch though, which may contribute to why Alvarez was complaining after he struck out.

Does it call strikes just based on the x and z values independently? If that's true a ball could just barely have the correct values to be a strike, but miss the corner by half an inch because of the curve of the ball. If anyone knows I'm curious.
@ericwildfong
@ericwildfong 15 күн бұрын
If you're looking to determine whether any part of the ball passed through an imaginary box would it make sense to consider x & z separately or together? Even if the ball is high enough to be a strike if it's not over the plate it's not a strike. Not sure what you mean by curve of the ball though
@spencertegtmeyer6525
@spencertegtmeyer6525 15 күн бұрын
@@ericwildfong you obviously have to consider both because it has to be over the plate and within a height range. What I'm saying js if you draw a corner of the strike zone and extend the vertical and horizontal lines outside the zone, you could have a ball touch both lines but not the zone because the ball isn't a cube.
@ericwildfong
@ericwildfong 15 күн бұрын
@@spencertegtmeyer6525 Huh? If you extend the lines then you can't have the correct values for a strike. The only way for the ball to have the "correct values to be a strike" is for the ball to be inside the zone. Or am I missing something? Just cause it touches both lines doesn't make the px pz values correct for a strike. The px and pz are the center of the ball, then there's some math for the radius of the ball (to account for it not being a cube) + a margin of error. I'm no expert on how the tech works, but I'm pretty sure a low and outside ball won't be considered a strike even if the px and pz are such that the edges of the ball would touch the extended edges of the zone box

The MLB disciplinarians and commissioners needs to crackdown with these MLB umpires provoking and antagonizing the players, managers and coaches with their attitudes and bad conduct. Like making bad calls. They're not cops or above the law. His catcher is the worst pitch framer ... in particular on the one pitch that was clearly already a strike low in the zone, but the catcher yanked it up a foot and that doesn't sit well with the blue.

Henry Davis, overall #1 pick in 2021. Last year the Pirates brought him up but played him mostly in the outfield, as fellow rookie Endy Rodriguez was seen as having better defense behind the plate. But Rodriguez had TJ surgery over the winter and last year's backup Jason Delay had knee surgery. So time for Davis to learn in the big leagues I guess.
