E36 BMW 328i Gutted Exhaust sound - M52

I gutted a standard M52 328I backbox and added staggered 2.5" rolled tips. Here's how it sounds with some pictures at the end. Its still pretty quiet on idle and light throttle, but sounds great on WOT.

Ignore the white smoke from the exhaust, car was pre-warmed - it was just a very cold morning.

Yes, a little first thing on a cold morning is fairly normal, it's likely just condensation.

Thinking of doing this to my e36. Thoughts, Concerns and what does "gutted" mean? Straight pipe?

At the end of the video you can see what 'Gutted' means - Basically gutting the internals of the OEM 328i exhaust. Doing this creates no drone(in my experience) than just fitting straight pipes, its also less noisy. I recommend doing it, sounds great and i have had no problems.

do you have the m52 exhaust camshaft still? What all did you do in order to make the timing work?

Yes still m52 exhaust cam. Timing is not an issue, just time it up as normal. The M54 inlet cam end has to be trimmed about 5mm to fit in the vanos, simple job. You can also put in a M50 NV inlet cam into the exhaust side which works well, but i havent been able to find one. Google and you will find more info, been a while since i looked into it.

No problem. Yes, stock 328i (pink) injectors are pretty good for those basic mods listed. I think some ppl use m3 ones also but i dont think there any gains to be made.

Yes i did, stock 328i injectors are good for basic tuning.

Why did you slash cut the new pipes you put inside the silencer? Nice sound btw

If i didn't, it would have just been the same as fitting straight pipes. Slash cutting the pipes takes out some of the harshness/rasp/drone of full straight pipes(which sound crap) imo.... i would have used proper perforated exhaust piping but i had none so made my own by cutting the slashs.

Virtually no drone with the way i done it. Putting slits in the pipes helps stop the drone. I have read online that full straight pipes can cause a drone.

Yea, basically. Although cutting the slashs inside and retaining the muffler takes out some of the harshness/rasp/drone of full straight pipes imo

Basically, but it isn't as loud or as harsh as straight pipes. At the end of the video you can see i cut slits in the pipes before welding up the box again so it isn't exactly straight piped.

It does sound better in person to be fair, the iPhone mic doesn't quite capture the sound correctly but each to their own.
