Be interested to know how this performs and how long it lasts! Do they give any idea as to how many miles it should last and what kind of torque rating it can handle? The 530d and 540i really should have come with an LSD from the factory!

bought the same LSD set for my E39 530d. Never started working properly. Not even on wet surface. It was like 2,5 years ago. Back in the day they didnt have friction shims, just regular washers. And watching your video i see that they have also changed the instructions a little bit. Going to open the diff this winter again and see what it has caused in there. Probably gonna contact the seller to see if i can get a set of those friction shims. Everything else seems to be the same. I think my grinding work was done poorly and thats why its not working. Probably gonna use a lathe to grind down does satellites, just to be sure for it to start working properly again.

This seems to work pretty well. Not much slipping even with 255 rears.

I bought the same kit not long ago. Absolute rubbish. A donut is impossible. In a straight line it will sometimes lock... Sometimes!

Im not sure but it seems possible to buy the newer 188L M-performance diff from BMW for around 700 Euros ( They could be sold out by now, the 3,08 ones ). And do a bearing conversion. But have not opened one to see if its welded like the newer open diffs are or bolted. Im not wiling to spend 700+ bearings just to try.

Seen those lsd hold 400+hp in a 330d e46, I'm guessing they can hold that much power with such small riction disks because the clamping force involved is much bigger than in a regular lsd. Edit: fixed some typos.

@@mazaispiileens I mean, you believe what you want but I've seen a 330d, big turbo, intercooler and all of this shit, remapped to over 400 hp and whatever huge amounts of torque a 3.0 6 cylinder diesel makes, repeatedly doing launches, burnouts, and other shenanigans with both wheel spinnign at all times. And it was indeed one of those tiny racediff open diff to lsd conversion thing. If you think your beliefs without any scientific proof are worth more than literally dozens of car running this without problems, and that your judgement is better than racediff engineer's, good for you buddy.

Really the same 188K diff? Bc the 330d (MAN) had the 215K diff. The (AUTO) came with 188K.

Hyvä KZbin. Juuri eilen katselin eBaysta kyseistä settiä ja mietin tekeekö tuolla mitään. Heti tänään tämä osasi suositella sun videoo mulle. Laita kestotestiä kun pääset sutimaan. Itellä ihan käyttis E39 mihin olis kiva saada sutia molemmille pyörille.

People now use a ( lead locker ) for a LSD conversion,. . just get casting sand a put some into where the output flanges go , block one of the open sides of the centre were the four gears are then pour heat lead into the other side . . People use this in burnout cars in solid rear axle cars . But well not work on diffs with C clips

Here they just weld up the gears :D It's called "kemppilukko". But it's really shitty to drive in normal traffic.

I built one of these up for my e63 645. It didn't work at all. I spoke to the manufacturer about it and they eventually concluded the auto box stopping it locking up correctly as the power doesn't hit hard at the diff like a manual clutch would. Sounded like a bit of an excuse but they refunded me most of the money so to be fair their customer service was very good. It tested it by launching in the wet and dry. Both resulted in 1 wheel spinning. It also couldn't do donuts in the wet or the dry. I have since fitted a e60 M5 lsd and it's absolutely brilliant. I'm interest to see if this works out for your E39

Was it with the older style washers and not with actual friction discs? They have updated the design, because the older design didn't hold up. Mine seems to work fairly well. It's not tight as real LSD but well enough locking for normal use.

5:16 tuossahan ei pinta-alalla ole merkitystä, vaan tehollisella säteellä ja voimalla millä sitä levyä painetaan

On sillä pinta-alalla metkitystä paljonkin. Mutta joo jos se sama pinta-ala on pienemmällä tai isommalla säteellä, niin niissä on. Ja painavalla voimalla toki kans. Tuossa nyt on vaan vähän hassusti että pinta-ala ja säde on pakostakin pieniä, niin sitä on kompensoitu isolla voimalla=esijännityksellä. Mikä tarkoittaa että nuo levyt kuluu todennäköisesti melko vauhdilla koska ne hierautuu toisiaan vasten isolla voimalla aina kun auto kääntyy.

Ei oo kokemusta, mut quaifen heikko puoli on siinä, et se on samanlainen avoin perä kun vakiokin, että jos toinen rengas pyörii tyhjää, niin veto loppuu. Jos taas renkaat on tiessä kiinni, niin sen pitäs toimia normi lukon kanssa. Semmosen asentaminen vaatii peräs shimmausta, hammaskosketuksen säätöä ja muuta, mikä ei ihan helppo homma oo, jos semmosta ei oo tehny.

please please please do the 188LSD swap into 188K casing and make a video! i assume the video will take some time and i would like to discuss a few things regarding that modification: 1. 188 LSD into 188K diff will require trimming of the LSD since in 188K the K stands for "Kompakt" (smaller). have you tried putting the 188LSD you show in the video into the 188K casing? is it really necessary to trim the LSD or is this just a myth? or maybe you have some 188K diff laying around where you could testfit the 188 LSD into? 2. if You put the LSD inside the old diff you would have to readjust the side shims (one you have says 3.38 in video if i remember correctly) because the shims center the gearset of the diff and with the LSD maybe the tolerances are shifted so you would need other shims? or will this stay the same? would be really cool if you could answer my questions. i really want to have a LSD in my E46. if you could provide the answers to my questions above i would buy 188LSD and try to fit it into 188K case

@@driftalliance1556 1. The typ188 LSD unit might need trimming to fit 188K casing but, not sure. Haven't tested. The 188 one is bit beefier on the speed sensor side than 188K. 2. Every time you change something in the diff, like bearings or the open diff pumpkin to LSD unit, you need to re-shim the diff. There is no way around it, if you want the diff to actually work.

For me it looks like you can't do that in lathe because those are hardened gears. Surface grinder is much more suited for that. But it's quite specialized equipment and not many places have that. I just grinded those as flat as I could and called it a day.

pazi88 what do you think is the likelihood of me being able to swap the pumpkin and gears from the 6 bolt 3.38 diff to my stock early e46 3.08(?) diff? I realllly don’t wanna go down the road of swapping my 4 bolt input to the new diff. Basically I just want the gears in my current housing for ease of install. *edit - I am unsure of my fact specs on the gear ratio on either diff. Just know that one was the factory one from my 99 323i (us) and one came out of a post facelift automatic e46 but is not the 3.4x diff. It’s a 3.38. Looked at the label.

@@toddwilliams7020 Changing gears to different diff is huge and time consuming operation. You need to assemble and dissemble the diff many times to properly shim the bearings and tooth contact.

Kyllä tuo vielä ainakin on pitäny ja toiminu. Eihän tuota nyt siihen e30:iin asennettuun 4 levyseen oikeaan lukkoon voi verrata. Mut viimesen päälle mukava ajella kun raapii kahdella.

Itte suunnitellut samanlaisen hankkimista omaan käyttikseen niin samantien vaa infoa ja videota kun kokemusta alkaa olemaan :D Paljonkohan koneistamolla mahtaisi maksaa ottaa siivut pois? Loistavia videoita ja toivottavasti myös tulevaisuudessa pysyttäisiin e39 :D Ja toimiikohan automaatti ja luistonesto normaalisti tuon kanssa kun käyttikseen tulisi ja en oo ainoa kuljettaja :D

Automaatin toimintaan ei pitäs olla vaikutusta ja luistonesto toimii ihan entiseen malliin. Eli ankkuri putoaa kun valo välähtää :D Koneistamo hinnasta en osaa sanoa, mutta nuo rattaat on karkaistuja, niin ei varmasti joka koneistamolla onnistu ohennus.

Joo ei nekään häävejä ole. Racing diffsiltä onneksi saa BMW:n levylukosta kopioitua lukkoyksikköä uutena samaan hintaan mitä quaife/wavetrack maksaa. En edes harkitsis muuta kuin levylukkoa jos semmonen on saatavilla.

@@pazi88 kyl. Kattonu sielt kans. On se iha eri ajaa kunnon lukol, kovemmissa vauhdeis kans tasapainottaa hyvin ku päästää kaasun eli ei oo levoton ollenkaa, mitä nää quaifet ym ei tee.
