E46 large case Diff 2.28 changed to X5 4.4i Diff 4.10 ratio.

Bmw E53 X5 Rear diff is perfect swap for a better ratio of drifting as i found low ratios are hard to get correct wheel speed and falls off boost, this 4.10 looks be keep it on boost so easy now as you can see at the end of video

@@SMTMOTORSPORT Yeah when everyone discovers this they are gonna rocket up in value. E83 3.91 ratio diffs which fit in the e46 are 2-3 times more expensive.

A lot of missing info here and a bunch of nonsensical random questions in the comments. GENERALLY SPEAKING, you can only swap internals from cases of similar type. 188mm (e30,e32,e34,e36) 188k (e39,e46,e53 (6cyl)) 210mm (e36 m3, e46m3) So on and so forth... They are non-compatible otherwise, unless you do some machining and/or use spacers (at which point you wouldn’t be here in the comments asking such basic questions). In the video, I believe the direct swap is between two 215mm cases.

This video was only to show a large case diff can be swapped from x5 to large case 330d e46 diff. X5 come with 188 and 210 diffs of different ratios. Like you explain There is many many diff in the Bmw range so it’s up to the person doing the job to research what they are about to do or buy. 🤗

so what model e53 x5 did you get the 4.10 from or did I miss this? also do you think this could work on a e46m3 large case diff ? the OE lsd unit from them3 is sorta of trash lol wouldnt mind trying this out

x5 2005 4.4L with short driveshaft i just swapped my 650i big diff with x5 2005 4.10 it was direct swap i was planning to get custom bracket and spacers to make it work but it was machining my 215LW Large diff 100% !!!!!!! don't know how but it happened !! 😆

Yeah it can if u get med 4.10 as x5 use both just finding right size. Large you know as it’s hard to lift compared to a med diff

@@SMTMOTORSPORT Thanks for the reply mate, in the end i went for X3 3.91, as i only need to swap out the output flange and call it a day. I am still using A340e auto gearbox on my 1jz vvti E46, guess that should be good for daily.

Hi I believe most 4 cylinder Bmw are small case meaning diff is same size as med case found on 6 cylinders only the cup side where drive shafts connect on are different but in the uk a e46 330d has a large case it’s much bigger and heavier diff I believe small and med case are 188s and 330d is a 210 and possibly m3 is 215 but never measure one of them so not sure The small and med share same subframe but the 330d has a different subframe and it’s same with m3 also completely different subframe for that diff Hope that helps anyways

Hi, great videos loon! Hope youre well after op. Watched a few of your videos and just subscribed. Would you know off the top of your head the folowing? Im researching lsd options for my 2012 e70 40d with 3.15 ratios. I think the rear diff is a 188k and front diff is a dana but ring gear size is unknown. Theres a wavetrac atb for an e60 3.15 but unsure if this would fit. Im not even sure what size of case I have. Quaife apparetly do make one for the rear and a diff builder thinks one could be machined to fit the front diff. Quaife of course lose traction if a wheel is lifted so not ideal for off roading. Have you any idea if the e60 wavetrac could be fitted to front and rear with a bit of fettling? I havent checked in axle sizes yet. Cheers, Alan

The case for the e46 2.28 ratio diff is supposedly a medium case according to ebay? 210mm case is found in the m3, do you mean the 215mm case? 2.82 diff is large case 215mm I beleive.

M3 is large case also but it’s longer and different cups so yea can’t use x5 stuff in m3 diffs already tried

Hiya Circlips stay with bearings so whatever u swap keep it same don’t mix circlip x5 one side and e46 bearings

@@r34t9r there’s 4.10 x5 come in large and med case so depending what your e46 has you then need the same size diffs med to med or large to large it won’t work doing med to large etc

Awwww yes 👌👍 is that a large case 4.10 with large case shafts cause i think u get large and med case 4.10s from E53, i have a large case 4.10 but my rear end set up uses med case and shafts so i have to figure out if i can swap large case CVs on to med case shafts, dont suppose you know if thats possible atall ? Oh yes I just found all this out large case cups etc don’t fit with med or small case only small and med u can do cup swap I have a med 4.10 and 4.44 welded But yea it’s now large case diff 4.10, 330d shafts and 330d trailing arms 🤙

Big cir-clips pliers did the job for me and a flat head screw driver to help break the seal

330d case as the 330i is actually a med case diff but the 330i have large case trailing arms…. 330i uses a drive shafts that are med case inside cv and large case outer cv Hope that helps answer your question 🤗

So question would I be able to shove an upgraded e46 m3 LSD into a 330 case? Of even better question I've been trying to find if the 330d which is a large case 215mm, would that diff be able to fit in the 330i? I'm trying to find out if I can take the LSD unit from the me and fit it into a 330d large case diff and stick that whole thing into my 330i?

Hi short answer no and no M3 diffs are large but longer, 330i is med case diff with large case trailing arms so weird setup as only 330i shafts fit on the 330i nothing else

@@SMTMOTORSPORT right I figured that because when I looked up part numbers for large case diffs I saw the same oil seals and shaft numbers so that threw me for a loop. But I've found out that the 330d or di the coupe have a large case 215mm diff case. So I was wondering if the m3 LSD which is 210mm could fit into there because all else aside, the 330d or diesel diff should fit into the pertol subframe. So my intention was to upgrade 2 fold, a larger case can handle more torque, and upgrade to an LSD as there are only really expensive options for the petrol 330.
