i'm a life long sail maker. you can improve your boat's performance by simply putting more tension on your mainsail luff. this will keep the draft forward and enhance the twist which will lower your heeling moment and improve balance for self steering... and you will go faster easier. same goes for headsails. in addition, keeping strong tension on your luffs will take load off the attachment points and stop early failure. give that a try and let us know how it works. i love your spunk and self reliance. i cruised your pacific route between 1975 and 1978 (w/o GPS) and love to see it all again. by all means, go to Ahe' and visit the Kamoka Farm pearls and Patrick Humbert. it is a welcoming place, lots of good fun and great people. aloha barry

Dear Holly. I just binge-watched your video's and I like so much what you share!! A couple of weeks ago I decided to plan for a circumnavigation solo trip myself. I used to sail a Grinde years ago. Now I am looking for which boat to buy. When I asked around someone advised me to check if a Grinde already has done a trip like this and then I found all your video's. I'm so grateful what you share on both the sailing experience as on prepping and refitting your boat. I am not so technical, but your video's make it seem doable. This Saturday I planned to check out two Grindes in Holland, where I live. Thank you so much for your inspiring video's and I will switch now to patreon to support you. Lots of love. Jacqueline
@WindHippieSailing4 жыл бұрын
So cool! I love my Grinde so much. she handles incredibly well in big seas. Even when I'm a bit overpowered, I almost never out a rail in the water. The plumb bow makes her skim over the waves rather than slicing into them. She's also small and easy to handle. I'm so excited you're looking at getting one too!

@@WindHippieSailing Actually, I have been recommending Holly's channel in other sailing channels in comments on my accounts; you guys may want to consider that. That may help Holly get more subs and frankly help people discover some great content that is a very authentic and doesn't have that contrived/over-produced feel. Holly, a lot of us are in a life position with a lot of life "ropes" tying us down much like the Lilliputians did to Gulliver. Not all those are bad things, most aren't, they range from responsibilities to people we love, limits on resources and also include emotions like fear....but all are constraining what we perceive we can do. When we have the opportunity to see content from generous people like you it is SUPER encouraging, brings joy and tons of vicarious adventure; it is the most constructive escape. : ) Thank You. -- Stephen in Missouri USA

The search algorithm is very critical. The first 3 words must be either: adventure, location and the word Solo. People are individual persons. They enter the word Solo a lot. No pronouns, no asking questions, no numbers, no Episode,etc. Just those words in different order. If the word Solo doesn’t apply, don’t use it. You have a fun channel. Hope it grows. 😎🍺👍🏽
@vxnova14 жыл бұрын
So what are you saying change the format to be something like “solo sailing the South Pacific then out the episode etc at the end”?
@dangonzales28964 жыл бұрын
@@vxnova1 The word Solo may not apply. Example' Sailling Pacific on way to Polynesia First two or three words are critical. Advanture, Location, word Solo. Any order. If Solo doesn't apply then the adventure first. Search algorithm. Critical in KZbin.

Holly: I would love to have your comments about stowing the dinghy on the foredeck. How about rowing? I like to row having grown up in antiquity when rowing was most common. I am building a kit dinghy to stow on the foredeck of my boat, a narrow 33 footer.. One piece of advice I got from a woman is to buy/build as light a dinghy as possible! I too favor hanks on headsails. Love to watch and re-watch your stories. Best, Norm, Cape Cod
@WindHippieSailing4 жыл бұрын
Hey Norm! I love rowing too! Once I adjusted my mind to the fact that I'd get everywhere slowly, it became a joy instead of a chore. Having a dinghy on the foredeck does get a bit in the way of a hank-on sail. However, I've discovered that it also makes a nice wind block when I'm trying to flake the sail at sea when I change headsails. Have you looked into the folding two-part dinghies? I met a couple who built one, and it rows really well. The two parts nest so that when you're storing it on deck it takes up less space.
@NormanHenryMartin4 жыл бұрын
@@WindHippieSailing Holly! Thanks for the quick reply. My boat has an 11 ft foredeck and I am building an 8 ft dinghy so, if my measurements are right, I ought to be able to get around it. I met a couple with a sectional dinghy on their Olson 38 which fit behind the mast and in front of the hatch but I don't have that room. Agree about rowing and a state of mind. A good rowboat is a joy. In '95 I did a race to Tahiti and we also visited Moorea. Beautiful places. So different from Caribbean. This was a crazy year so we didn't even launch and do our favorite Maine cruise. Keep well. N

Awesome video, yip single handing is not for everybody, I take it you've got no tiller pilot as backup for your wind vane, would sure help with upwind reefing, great to see such a brave sailor in a small boat making a big passage, I beat you on size but only by 3.5' and a bit of beam. Currently planning a solo Atlantic crossing on a Nebe Miura masthead sloop, great little tumblehome hull, transom hung skeg rudder South African built boats (Cape to Rio class winners, overall winner and class winners Cape Town St Helena return single handed races and more confirmed circumnavigations than any other boat under 31') my reefing and foretriangle setup is as follows, 3 slab reefing points on the main with two bullhorns on the boom and a short snap shackle pennant for the luff cringles, halyard led back to the port side cabin top winch with dual jammers, leech pennants are in boom through deck organiser and back through jammers to stbd side cabin top winch, so I only have to go to the mast to attach the luff cringles, also got a second track on the mast going up to the spreaders for a storm trisail, loose footed main sails, furling 135% cruising genoa with 2 reefs, removable inner stay with hank on 100% working jib and storm staysail on a single sheet self tacking track led back to the cockpit with cam cleat, cruising gennaker and asymmetric spinnaker with small retractable stainless steel bowsprit, adjustable split backstay so can sail as a Solent style cutter. Hydrovane (on order) and tiller pilot as backup. I'm not a fan of fixed footed mains. Everything can be done from the cockpit except obviously hanking on the staysail and hooking the main's luff reef cringles onto the respective points, all very simple and safe. Respect to you, stay safe, fair winds and following seas. Stoked you made it across safe and sound

As a land lubber, with none of your incredible experience, good, and not so good, ( it all shines through, even after the edit). I think if l was aboard, on that tilt, or rise and fall, l would try a funnel to pour, whilst my container was stood in the enclosed sink. You impressed upon me, how very important it is to conserve water, like re-use canned water from vegetables, for rice boiling etc. I would be scared to death, sailing, but with you, l would feel safer, and keeping a vlog, with feedback is probably a very healthy thing to do, whilst solo.😉💖

Single handers should be adept at heaving too. Much easier to reef when hove too. Second you need to tie your reefs in MUCH tighter. You're setting a reefed (smaller) sail, but its baggy and that depth is adding power you're trying to take away by reefing.
@svkusi4 жыл бұрын
Yep, heaving to is good, the simplicity of having everything at the mast is good, also mark the halyard for the reef positions so you know how much halyard to let out! Awesome stuff, inspiring and wish I was sailing across the Pacific not racing round the solent! There's so much in not having the wrong amount of sail up, no need to overpress her as it's no faster once at hull speed, all it does is break stuff.

It took a miserable 16 days tacking non stop to accomplish this first leg of Pacific crossing however sailing to the Marquesas was a smooth and easy 4 weeks, but no fish no birds, thousands of dolphins greeted us as we approached Fatu Hiva.
