Mark thanks. I have the M4 CS and just bought my dream car growing up…M5 e60 48k 1 owner with all the service records at the bmw dealer. I am so excited but very anxious from all the bad image online. Your videos are the most informative for a new owner like me and find them very well thought. Thank you very much for all the e60 videos. Many thanks to everyone sharing their own experiences as well. Very helpful.

Greets Mark My experience and habits about the overall maintenance in my 13 year old M5 and what I did and still do: Oil changing max!!! every 10.000 km, and of course only 10W-60 Castrol (I bring the 10L to the dealer) and always with Oil Filter... never drive when the Oil level is more than 1,0L or less than 0.1L.... when the level gets at 0.3L I fill up... it's better for the Vanos too.. only original parts and services at the dealer, it costs more but I have always warranty and a better selling price in the future...if.. but I have no intention to sell it... I would rather take it with me to the grave hahaa... When the engine is cold I don't wait, never... I drive away but very slowly, very gently... it's like holding my daughters hand.. .. absolutely never never never push it more than 3000rpm, when it gets warmer I do not exceed 5000rpm... when 100 degrees Celsius or 220 Fahrenheit I do whatever I want with it, often 8500rpm, since 11 years with ECU Program 250 more rpm and speed limiter delete (you say governor), hard and sometimes brutal...we all know that the engine loves it, always.. it was built to do that. SMG Gearbox always in Manual at position 5, never in D mode or less than 5. Always start in 1, never in second. When arriving at a traffic signal or being in traffic I select N. When parking also N with handbrake of course. Very few Launch Controls only in the first years. I have still the first clutch!!!!!!!! The SMG pump once changed! Spark plugs, Differential- & gearbox Oils, also Brake fluid changed every 30'000km. Engine and gearbox are one poem together.. A couple of weeks ago I had to change the Oil cooler, which had a tiny little crack... also changed at the suspension Syneblock and Querlenker.. 2'000 EUR... after 13 years!!! new Michelin Super Sport tires..some fluids some tiny strokes...some leather treatment... another 2,5 grand.. that's live... all in all for that supercar the expenses are more than reasonable... Blackstone test is done each 2-3 years.. in January done and it was just excellent.. when the engine is treated good, especially in cold phase till it gets 100 C the bearings have no problems.. nevertheless, I told the mechanic to change the bearings this year...why not.. Generally I am more than satisfied with the M5, it shows great durability and takes every day hard punches when warm without crying or complaining... and I am sure it'll last for another 13 years... and so on. Peace & Love

The owner of VF engineering stated the reason for the rid bearing ware in the e92 and e60 is because of the knock system. Witch is based off the spark plugs. And when the spark plugs begin the age the knock signal isn't as accurate making the rod bearing ware unevenly.
@ivanmoore754 жыл бұрын
Just a question, additive called ZX1 that uses the oil a a transport to all the metal surfaces in the engine, in particular in between the rod bearings, would this stuff be a benefit at all, or would it harm the v10, it apparently clings to the metal surfaces & in theory stays on the metal even after an oil change, thoughts ?

Hey Mark! Any thoughts on Archoil 9100 to aid in rod bearing lube, especially during startup/warmup? Alex at the Archoil shop responded to my question with "You can use AR9100 in your E60 M5, AR9100 will help protect the rod bearings from wear and premature failure. I do actually remember speaking to an S62 engine builder who liked using AR9100 in his builds, I cant recall his name though.". I add it to the oil on my 02 E450 7.3 Turbo Diesel and it's quite awesome. For the M5 though, I can't find anyone else using it. Any thoughts on it? Thanks - Dave P

Mark any idea if it is below 0 weather and you start up the car in such cold weather will that cause some kind of bearing damage since the oil is so thick from freezing weather.
@ECPP5 жыл бұрын
In short, cold weather does not do it any favors for sure, thats why a corrected viscosity may be needed to reduce this issue in winter. People do drive them in winter and it is fine, but warm up periods are very important.

Castrol 10W60 good to use on these engines?
@ECPP6 жыл бұрын
Hi Carlo yes another option that is suitable is the 10w-60 Castrol Edge "SUPERCAR" as it is a full synthetic and that WAS spec'd for the M5 previous. Recently they switched to Shell, but I would use the Castrol as another option. MUST be fully synthetic though.

No true, the tachometer warm up indicator being at 8200 is still at a time when the oil is not warmed, not nearly warm enough. This is why so many of these E60 V10’s get rid bearing damage, all these excited people want to rip on it way too early,,, WAY to early. Patience is a virtue.

@bugtown81626 жыл бұрын
Better to drive the car straight away from cold, but only gently. That way you will get everything up to temperature much more quickly without causing any damage. It is cold running that causes damage, and by letting it idle you are extending the period of cold running to the maximum possible.
