any reason you decided to do the timing chain? was it rattling? I have 174k on mine and it's never been done but no rattle? everyone says life of the engine or unless it rattles?

Hi, there's three chains on the M57 and although not exceptionally common, they do let go. Mine had 190k miles on it when I bought it and as far as I could tel it was on originals. I do some quite long road trips and I decided to do it just for peace of mind. I have an X5 with the single turbo M57 and that's just about to hit 200k miles on original chains and it sounds great still with no rattle or slap from the chains, but every time on on a long arse road trip across into Eastern Europe I start to worry about it. I guess I may be worrying for nothing, but sometimes it's just good to be sure. Take a look at "crank" on KZbin, he's seen quite a few failures and covers the damage that occurs when they do fail. Thanks for viewing and for the comment.

@@shanehogarth6373 appreciate you taking the time to give such a good reply, enjoyed your video, recently got mine and my first job will be gearbox zf service kit and change diff oil & engine service, also considering deleting swirl flaps but heard you lose low end torque so I'm conflicted haha.. also considering changing the crank case breather whilst I've the bonnet up. I lucked out and got a top spec model with the m57d30t2 engine, so happy with it

Hi, glad you got a good one. I too need to do the ZF trans oil flush etc, whenI do mine I'll change the three tube like bits (sorry, can't think of the correct name just now) behind the valve body. I've got rid of the swirl flaps and really don't feel any difference. The biggest thing that I've found that affects low down grunt is deteriorating vac pipes around the pressure converters etc on the assy above the turbos. They go crusty and fall to pieces eventually, but when they start to fail the system isn't capable of holding vacuum and the boost from the first turbo is compromised. It's a fiddly uncomfortable task but on mine at least it was worth every bit of effort. Good luck with the car.

@@shanehogarth6373 yep I'm doing the gbox seals too, there's actually 4 of the tubes, 2 short, a medium and a long one. Also some people on forums mention their car struggles or never does a dpf regen when they deleted the swirl flaps but I'm not sure why that would affect it ... thanks I'll keep an eye on the vac lines :) all the best
