It has become common practice for the AAA game industry to release games in an unfinished state and then proceed to sell us the finishing bits as extra dlc. Todd Howard (executive producer/figurehead for Bethesda) even came out and said something along the lines of "it's not about how a game is when it launches but where it ends up that matters" in response to all the backlash at Fallout 76.

Just want to add that MVP Baseball 2005 was also just $20 at release. Both are considered by many to be the best video games of their respected sports, both came out during the 2004-05 seasons, & both cost $20 new. Talk about "a bang for your buck", you could get both of them then for cheaper than Madden 2021 alone, & they were complete games with no DLC or microtransactions. 15 years later, sports games are getting worse & more expensive.

2K5 is what got me into football games. I played Gameday 2002 and 2004, but when I had the most fun playing 2K5. Ever since EA got the exclusive rights, I switched to Madden. Played Madden 07, 08, and 12. Those were alright but then I fell off when I saw where Madden was heading. Ironically, 2K5 was much more “premium” compared to Madden, even at a lower price.

Here’s the most important thing though- you and I AREN’T the customer. Neither is anybody who bought the game...at least, we aren’t the target customers. The real customers are the people buying MUT packs and cosmetics in The Yard. That’s who EA really cares about, and just like a Vegas Casino buffet, why they’ll give away their game to thousands. The only thing anyone at EA will have to answer for is what are the $$ numbers YoY for MUT and how much added revenue did The Yard bring in. Unless in-game gambling is curbed via legislation or revenue via said gambling mechanics drastically falls we will NEVER see EA Sports care about the initial purchaser ever again.

Madden's main issues with being able to make solid games is the cost of production, and the fact that they make a new game every year. they should just make a single madden game, and every year they should provide purchasable DLC that updates the game with new players and updated player ratings. After how its been for the past few years, they should just focus on making a game and improving it instead of rapidly making new editions that they can't keep up with.

bro i fucking love you.. No lie i use to be a high level head to head competitor top 100 in the world in madden and use to be number 1 in nba in 2k for a few years. I decided about 4 or maybe 5 years ago im done with both of them. once they focused on myplayer or MUT and it was clear that's all they ever cared about i have yet to buy them since. I love head to head but i love franchise and gm mode on these games more then anything. Innovation with these sports monopolies have stopped. The only focus they care about is the microtransactions. I have lost hope over the past several years due to not seeing enough people speak up in anger about their continuous copy and paste jobs. Thank god you have come along i have regained hope in the fight. keep fighting the good fight we need more people like you out their with the energy and effort to make a change. my god ea has the resources to do it its mind boggling why they do not .

Video games now are structured like mobile games. The core loop to have players go through is now in consoles. The overarching formula is to program the user to keep returning to complete daily and weekly tasks. To make way for conversion of players that play the game for free to spending money on in-game content or dlc. In the end, games like Madden are nostalgic and hold a strong tradition with many players. But please remember, this is a Product, and this product is produced by a corporation that has an obligation to their investors. Unfortunately, the design of the game has to follow the formula set in place by the company. Unless economic changes happen that affects how corporations earns revenues from products more and more games will fall prey to this type of design.

I always liked the playoff bracket picture that Tecmo Super Bowl for NES had. For the last 30 years, I always wondered why Madden didn’t have one. I guess it finally will have one. Oh, and I also liked the celebration screen for each team when they clinched their division (I.e. in week 15, it would say “Dallas Cowboys have won the NFC West” with a picture of the coach and players celebrating. It would show this even if you were not controlling that team)

Very predictable tbh. Amazing how backwards the game has really gotten since the PS2 days. Graphics got better, but they took away the aspects of the modes, the collisions still aren't right, and they market a new one every year for $60 still. I've been a fan for years, but I am not going to pay for new copies, and I started last year when I saw they didn't do shit with it.

This is why sports titles need to go to abt a 3 year release cycle, to release a complete game. Annual releases are no longer needed with live updates. Quality games these days take 3-5 years to make. But sports titles consistently release incomplete games and charge full price plus in game purchases. Huge scam...but hey people keep buying them so why would change a successful business model???
