Did this tour as a SGT in the Army, 1973. It was such spectacular scenery for a young Texas soldier.

Exactly right. We have traveled to many locations all over the world, and this was one of the most spectacular rides we have ever taken. I am so glad we have been able to share it with so many who may never get the chance to take the ride up this road.

Thanks for a great video! I have made that same trip I think 4-5 times since the first time in 1983. My best friend was a Dod’s teacher for 13 years and I had the opportunity to go over several times to see her in the summers and we would travel in her BMW and then again in 2002 went w/my son and daughter in law and again in 2011 took my husband for our 50th Anniversary and it was a different experience each time! I sure miss the AFFES hotels there- such a shame - we stayed in the Berchtesgadener Hof that first trip and then missed the General Walker Hotel when they destroyed both - such a waste. I never took the time to video - so this is a real treat! If you have others of that area would love to see. My friend taught at Wharton Barracks in Heilbronn.

Glad you enjoyed it. We have been to Germany three times but only once to Obersalzberg. We have been to Europe several times, but would love to go back to the Bavaria area to see the things we did not see before. I know what you mean about the destruction of the General Walker hotel. It is truly a shame that it was destroyed. Here is a link to our entire trip in 2012 with the Ambrose Band of Brothers Tour. It includes our ride up to the Eagle's Nest seen here plus much more. You can fast forward to the Berchtesgaden and Obersalzberg area if you like....kzbin.info/www/bejne/imG4Z5-Qe9OVrbs

@@charliefass wow thanks I will check them out. We are now both getting too old to travel much anymore so looking at these videos helps me relive some of those trips! First time I went over was in 1979 with our middle daughter’s drill team who were performing in Vienna at a Valentine Ball and obviously very cold and much snow so when they flew back to the states I took the train to visit my friend in Heilbronn for a couple more weeks.

Great video for sure! Am I seeing things that aren’t there or was asphalt placed over what was originally a paver stone road? I thought it was all pavers.
@charliefass3 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I don't know what the original paving was. There is some pretty harsh winter weather, especially at the higher elevations, so I would expect that it has been repaved since the 1940s.
@MrVettester993 жыл бұрын
@@charliefass I agree to the harsh winters! Honestly, I think it was all pavers. If you watch closely to parts of your video. You will see pavers under the areas that were started with the asphalt process. Especially after you have gone thru tunnels… great video! Vids from hitler days show areas with pavers. Just curious.

It is truly an experience. When you get off the bus you walk down a long tunnel and get onto the original elevator for the ride up to the building. It is a remarkable structure. We had a great lunch there too. I will never forget the view.

Very Neat. I was sitting in the same spot where you filmed many years ago. I remember one of the very sharp turns near the top where it was possible to see almost right over the edge and down the mountain side. It is a very neat place to stop and see the history. Hitlers get away spot much like Camp David is for POTUS.

So is the entire bus ride up to the top of the mountain only 15mins??? Any chance you know how long the elevator ride took? I'm not a fan of enclosed spaces!
@charliefass8 жыл бұрын
+nomiki21 .......yes, the video shows the entire ride from its start to its finish. I did not time the elevator ride, but it is no more than a couple on minutes from the start to finish. Keep in mind, though, that once you get off the bus, you walk through a long tunnel to get to the elevator. Your option to the bus and the elevator is to hike up the mountain, and there are well marked trails to do this.
@nomiki218 жыл бұрын
+Charlie Fass Thank you so much for replying. I wont be hiking it up the mountain that's for sure but I appreciate knowing that it's only a 15 min bus ride and I'm glad you mentioned the tunnel. I can prepare for it mentally now so I wont be surprised in anyway on the day. Thanks again! :)

I know what you mean. It was beautiful right there at that spot. The Sound of Music was actually shot not far from there across the border into Austria in and around Salzberg. The actual field where she sang at the opening is now on private property.

Sure hope that's a one way road
@charliefass4 жыл бұрын
It is a road open only to the specially designed buses on which you ride to and from. About midway up the busses coming down pull off to the side at a designated location to let the upward buses go by (much like two trains which meet on a single track railroad). It would be quite hazardous otherwise. Private vehicle's are not permitted on this road.
@marcconner83824 жыл бұрын
Charlie Fass TX for that info. The history there has to hit you in the face.
@charliefass4 жыл бұрын
@@marcconner8382 Yes, it was "in the face" history for sure. For many years I just read about the events of WWII, looked at photos, watched movies & videos. Until you are actually there, though, you have only limited conception of what it was like. I really deepens your understanding and appreciation. I have been the Ardennes forest, stood at the water's edge at Normandy, slept at Rommel's headquarters in France, been in the bunker at Ponte de Hoc, been in Churchill's bunker in London, been to Bletchley Park where the Enigma code was broken, and stood on the deck of the USS Missouri where the Japanese surrendered in 1945, plus many other historic locations. The same has been true of our trip to the Holy Land where I stood on many of the spots written up in the Bible. History becomes ALIVE because of this experience. If you are a history buff, I would suggest that you put travel to locations of your historic interest on your list of things to do. You will never regret doing it.

By car, take the AB and exit at Bad Reichenhall or at Salzburg Sud to Berchtesgaden. From there, take the Obersalzberg road to the Hintereck parking area. This is also known as the upper bus parking area on Obersalzberg. The bus runs from about May to October depending on the weather. It leaves every 25 minutes.
