Eagle Tree Antenna Tracker Tutorial - RCGroups FPV Video Review

In this RCGroups video tutorial, editor Matt Gunn explains the benefits and how-to for setting up the Eagle Tree antenna tracker function.
Required items are the Eagle Tree Vector flight controller, a pan and tilt such as the ReadyMadeRC unit, and the Eagle Eyes FPV Station

I have been experimenting with using antenna gain as my feedback signal to smooth out the system operation. Using only the difference in the gps positions gives the slightly " notcy" movement. The processor has to resolve the difference between the two positions and convert this into a antenna steer. Negative feedback from antenna signal gain is my attempt to dampen this out a bit. Early days but getting there.

I have an Eagle Eyes Tracker setup. All new kit from Eagle Tree Systems. Everything behaves as designed and as indicated by the Operation Manual except when you get to calibration. The tracker will not move via manual calibration attempts with the elevator stick. I have manually hardwired the Vector video to the Eagle Eyes. Used multiple servos, three different radios, antennas, cables and multiple Eagle Eyes. I have 5V DC coming out of the Eagle Eyes servo ports. When I test the servos they work great. I have multiples of everything needed for the Tracker and each setup behaves as described herein. There is no binding in the tracker. Any thoughts would be great...thanks

So it uses the textv function to send data. Not the audio channel? I see the flashing bar up on your video. That is what texttv used before to send data.

Hello, I am new to this antenna tracking system. I have the EagleEye ground station and I want to set up the antenna tracker. Can the EagleEye work with other flight controller or must I have the vector before I can get the antenna tracking to work?

It looks like the tracker has significant lag. the antenna seems to be 15 to 30 degrees behind the plane. What's the "beam width" on your receiver antenna?

I would again like to comment. I have researched over a dozen of the Eagle Eyes units. I own three units personally. I have tried every conceivable combination of parts including but not limited to radios, servos, receivers, wires, batteries and so on. I have yet to witness the Eagle Eyes unit actually calibrate and/or track a Vector AP. Experience tells me that I am missing an input or have some electrical process failure. Regardless...I have been in the hobby for over 15 years and I have yet to experience an Eagle Eyes tracker that works. Surely a resolution exists that I or the circle of users in my area have missed. Any suggestions?

I haven't done it many times but when I setup my Eagle Eyes for tracking my Vector equipped aircraft it did work. IIRC I just followed the instructions in this video and it worked.

1.2Ghz works ok with linear antennas until you fly with objects in the background such as cliffs, houses, etc. Then you get reflections that mess up the signal.

Hmm what do you mean that it is "tracking very well" ?? In the video there is a lag of about 30-45 degrees.. ? Strange that you considet that tobe ok..

Not strange at all. That antenna is a Yagi and does not need to be pointed directly at the aircraft to work, there's a 60 degree field of view, so if there's a little lag, it's not a problem. Reference the video and you'll see no breakup of the feed at all. Trust me, I've used this setup extensively for years now and it works great and tracks well too.

I don´t mean the antenna it self but the tracker, does not seem to be all that accurate as I would expect, if for instance the distance was significant the I would be concerned if the tracker is not able to keep the antennas "peak" performance, i.e in the middle of the 60 degrees... Well that is maybe a matter of adjusting the tracker..

More like if using a parabolic grid antenna with a tiny beam width. Delay would mess it up pretty badly.
