My Grandad used to work on Mosquitoes during his National Service in the early fifties. Funnily enough him and all the other ground crew *hated* them. They're very pretty to look at and when they're flying, but they were nasty things to maintain and get started. To get the engine going some poor sap would have to stand behind the exhausts to do something (I can't remember what) and for their successful efforts they'd get blasted with a cloud of soot and engine exhaust which probably takes a year off of your life each time, then go around and do it again on the other side of the plane. When they only had one left at his airfield some bigshot flying ace came down to the airfield and proudly showed everyone "See this badge, that means I can fly anything, so I want a go in the mozzie!" Ended up crash landing it (luckily the only thing he hurt of himself was his massive ego) and writing the plane off. My Grandad and his mates had a small party in the hangar after that!

DCS already offers WW2 multiplayer servers and single player campaigns. It looks to me that simply players tend to spend more time in jets and on jet era servers. After all, WW2 planes require more skill to score a kill with cannon then with missiles in jets. Also hitting a ship or ground targets with bomb just by eye and estimation is hard, too. That propably discourage many players since easy air to air kill with missile or pre-computed ballistic path for bombs followed by guaranteed hit offers instant gratification without too much effort.

I'll definitely be getting this. However in the arena of Air Quake in the Storm of War server (the only active WW2 server) I can't help but feel that this is going to be one visually huge target, with no way to out turn the smaller aircraft and nothing to bomb. Dents and scratches are immersive, but they never think that airplanes might be a little newer at the time they are used. Personally, it bores me to see the same scratches every day and in all YT's videos.
@sildurmank3 жыл бұрын
Also people never thinks an used aircraft no matter how new it was the day before is going to be worn and they worn out really quick in combat environment, nothing to do with an expensive warbird in modern day well taken care of, using modern paints and materials, and with a caring owner who pays the bills so better to keep it clean and spotless XD
@startrekmike3 жыл бұрын
@@HeinrichHarpo I would say the same of those who have never really thought about just how much abuse the various controls and instruments took in active service and how that would impact the paint work. Anyone who has actually worked on a military aircraft will tell you just how pointless it is to worry about nicked up paint when there are far, far more important things to deal with. I know that this is a big controversy item in the DCS community but if you really look at photos of active duty aircraft, you will see that they have always been rather rough around the edges when it comes to interior paintwork. Some planes get hit harder than others depending on how HOTAS centric they are but when it comes to WWII stuff, what we see in DCS is generally consistent with what a real combat pilot could reasonably expect.

You realize that the Air Ministry didn't believe that an unarmed bomber would be useful, so wouldn't fund it. Goeoffrey De Havilland built it anyway, and rammed their fears down their throats. The world's first truly multi-role combat aircraft. Someone once wrote about the Mossie "A jack of all trades, and master of them all".
