@dickriggles9426 ай бұрын
I said that as a kid back in the eighties too, lol. Still waiting...
@rexex3456 ай бұрын
Ok probably way too nerdy for the obvious jokes, but the mechs in Gundam (mobile suits) are technically based on an industrial design. Originally they were exoskeleton space suits meant for 0g construction and maintenance of space colonies, with the very first models being called balls due to them being spherical pods that were later refined into the humanoid design for better manipulation and maneuvering. The weaponisation of them was due to the faction that created them being formed out of colonies who didn't have as much readily available infrastructure to build traditional ships or tanks and therefore adapted the industrial mechs by outfitting them with armour and scaled up weaponry. As for the middle schooler thing, at least for gundam, it isn't that they're the best option, generally they're the only option, either kids forced into the situation by circumstance, child soldiers who honestly either aren't much more than more bodies for the grinder where the mech is more valuable than their lives, or they're veterans by the point they're sitting in that cockpit cause they've been forced to fight from the day they could walk... Or in the case of the original teenager pilot Amaru, he was arguably actually the best option as his father designed the Gundam and he was regularly helping test the systems meaning it was keyed to his specific tuning settings when shit hit the fan, and with him being the only surviving member of the RnD team there really wasn't anyone else to take his place. Aside from that the only other detail that matters is new types which can be summed up as generationally increasing population of people with enhanced mental faculties and due to the time frame most new types of the current generation would only be teenagers meaning they end up falling into the conscription category.

@@rexex345Funny because if the Gundam gets damaged they can still salvage it and use it's parts to make a new one like they did in Wing Because Leo's and GMs kinda just explode with a single beam lol
@rexex3456 ай бұрын
@@ls0l4ce Gundam actually has different universes, so the explanations differ between them , in the main timeline for example there's only really 1 Gundam at first because it's a prototype, but generally for all universes the same is true that they're generally treated with or made with something called lunar titanium, an alloy that is resistant to high energy impacts and radiation while being more lightweight than the normal titanium or steel alloys you might see otherwise... It's worth mentioning some things: - the use of lunar titanium which is nicknamed Gundanium, the Gundams are initially named after the alloy in the original/ main Universal Century timeline, and unless otherwise stated are in others (like Wing). - Gundanium is prohibitively expensive for mass use, which generally results in Gundam being more Bespoke designs to give their pilots as much edge as possible given their rarity - Gundams are generally built from scratch with the intent to function in either an twin atmosphere and 0g environment which also means that they usually require either special training, settings or software to function often still being horrendously hard to use, eg in wing, an average mobile suit will need to exert G forces that can and probably will kill the pilot to keep up, and the Gundam pilots in that were trained from very young specifically to handle that strain coupled with specialized dampening equipment, on the other hand, the Gundams in Iron Blooded Orphans or Witch from Mercury don't have special materials but instead have cybernetic interfaces that can, probably will and in the case of the Aerial have multiple times killed the pilots. - beam/particle weaponry is not lightweight, to put it into perspective, a beam cannon you might see in wing or UC for example started as battleship mounted weapons that use a tiny physical projectile to lead a bolt of high yield energy that will then cause the target to tear itself apart at an atomic level, Gundanium's primary advantage is that it is mailable and energy durable enough to reflect, refract, or otherwise disperse the energy blow, same with beam sabers, that being said, they're still plasma and beam thus a prolonged enough beam will still cut through a Gundam just the same. - these things aren't running on fuel, Mobile suits in early UC use nuclear reactors that were known to go critical when even mildly damaged, later gen MS's use less volatile fusion reactors, many MS's built on earth are designed with fuel as the power sources, Gundams are generally either fusion, or fusion+solar/solar radiation powered, this honestly is often the biggest thing that puts them ahead, the difference between a Gundam and an MS and often an MS vs a tank is the difference between an F4, an F35 and an A10. The reason MS' took over in any Gundam timeline was generally either force projection, versatility, or just the fact that even if your Abrams has a lower profile, it doesn't matter much when the target can still see you, is using thrusters to put pace you on land or just fly over you, can pick you up and/or choose between snapping you like a twig or making you flatter, or just turning you and the surrounding cover into a 12000°crater. That last part is the biggest thing, the oldest model in Gundam's catalogue, the Zaku, had a general land speed comparable to a modern tank, but more packed armor more parts of it that could be hit without neutralizing it, could maintain hovering status if need be, and had what was essentially an M240 for a standard rifle shooting 100-120mm shells at roughly 280 RPM. And to bring it back to OP post, that was the old construction mech retrofitted for war. Later models were on par with fighter jets while on the ground with ammunition meant specifically to make that tank over there, it's friends and the general area around them all explode. Also if anyone is wondering why you've heard of wing but not UC if that's the main continuity, it's cause Gundam as a franchise was made by people who grew up in a post nuke Japan, and the original was as far as is known to date the first animated drama with Gundam's themselves being allegories for Nukes. Western, or more specifically American localisers couldn't make it kid friendly enough for TV especially past a point where it started really touching on stuff that resonated with Vietnam war vets and PTSD and had been cancelled due to (potentially fudged) poor viewership ratings in Japan. It's rise to cultural relevance happened afterwards with older crowds getting attached to the mature themes and story telling. It wouldn't be until the 90s with Wing that it would get a proper localisation as said localisers felt it would be easier for audiences to get into the fresh setting rather than the now extended UC timeline... Side note, if you want to watch the UC stuff, the whole thing was turned into a fantastic movie series, has several stand alone mini series diving into both various skirmishes and battles of the 1 Year War, as well as POVs of grunts and civilians from both sides, additionally there is a fantastic movie series that dives into the backstory of the main antagonist of the timeline, and the political machinations that would lead to the war, finally is Unicorn, an anniversary mini-series that is a great capstone and relavent enough that its titular Gundam shares a statue in Tokyo with the OG. Oh and Sunrise has gone from being a small studio that barely has a budget to now basically having a budget that would make a Disney movie look poor, so this stuff is all realized in all the detail you could hope for to go with the trauma you will experience.
