im a novice myself but i thinks its a combination of the high quality of the drum mixed with the hardness of the stick, his agressive strokes at the top of the drum, and the pressure he puts on the head with his right hand

It seem like a differnt kind of tipper as there is not a knob on each end, and is being held closer to one end instead of in the middle. Are you feet also providing a beat?
