The whole idea of National Insurance contributions was to pay for a state pension. The fact that NI now contributes to the overall tax take from the government isn't the fault of individuals who've paid NI contributions for forty years of their working life.I don't have children but some of my taxes have been used to pay for state education.Am i resentful of that fact? No.Children need to be educated and i'm aware tax resources need to be spent in that area of public spending. There are universal benefits and means-tested benefits. Some people might regard a pension as a benefit....i don't.There is a social contract between government and tax payers that pensions should be honoured and guaranteed because that is what governments have promised in the past.Means-testing for something that you've already paid for is not going to go down well with those who are not far off retirement age. Many public sector workers retire at 55 or 60 with their public sector pensions, well ahead of many people in the private sector.Should that anomoly be looked at? Their are many unfairnesses and perceived disadvantages when pensions are discussed in the round, but it will be a disgraceful day for our parliamentary democracy if politicians go down the road of means testing the state pension.

Jack mentions the poorer people who collect their state pension for a shorter period of time than richer people, as they have lower life expectancy, completely ignoring the fact that the richer people are likely to have paid more in to the system over their lifetime than a poorer person. Using Jack's philosophy, when people do their supermarket (or any other) shopping, the cashier should ask the customer how rich they are, then charge the richer people more for the same goods! It's a fact of life that whatever someone does to try to make things 'fair', there will ALWAYS be some people who are better off than others. Perhaps he should consider the fact that he's wearing a smart shirt and earbuds, sitting on a chair in a room with electricity and an internet connection, while there are other people throughout the world without homes, electricity, clean clothing or sufficient food. Your NIC contributions paid for the pensions of people who were already retired. At the time the demographics meant that there were far more working people paying pensions of relatively few retired people and for a short period due to life expectancy changes. We now have a situation were our demographic is aging so we have fewer workers paying the pensions of lots of people who may be retired for 20/25 years. That is a massive transfer for wealth. The younger generation are being massively screwed over.

If the National Insurance payments had been pooled for a year or two,or,alternatively, the pension had been started at a low level, and gradually increased as the pot filled,so to speak, then we would not be facing the issues that we have today. I don’t really want to raise the ugly head of politics, but Attlee was a Socialist, and that party seems to have a history of spending money that they/we can’t afford!

After 50 years of paying NI contributions, never drawing benefits and saving in a personal pension I am now in a position where my assets exceed 1 million tax payed pounds. I am now in receipt of my full state pension which I feel I am fully entitled to. I still pay income tax and VAT on goods and services so am a contributor to the economy as are many other pensioners. He's talking drivel.

You worked hard to make a million. His idea is to take pensions off the hardest workers like you & give it to pèople that worked the least like dolescroungers. 2 works for thjs chap. Brain & dead. People this stupid only see rich pensioners & conclude they dont need the money. Very Simplistic like him. They have not got the mental capacity to formulate the conseqences of such a stupid idea.

Many of his generation are on benefits anyway, are they not. I have paid my for my pension, those who have never worked should not get any.

The wealthier pensioners who receive the same state pension as those who were lower earners probably spent more of their working life paying higher levels of tax into the system.

Can someone please explain to the young whipper snapper how the state pension system works, he seems to think it is a benefit given to people in old age.

From the generation who want everything yesterday , the generation who spend with gay abandon and then at the end of the month when the invisible cash spent on their soya skinny lattes and poke bowls etc needs paid they start twisting about having no money, Ive been working 50 years paid tens of thousands in tax and NI had a mortgage when interest rates were 15% but we do t deserve a pension give your head a wobble, 🔔end!!!

Our pension payment it a disgrace, other countries in Europe pay much higher pension to retired people.

Means testing means it'll be progressively lowered. The tax threshold has been frozen so even the most modest pensioners are paying more. The younger generation have never been so affluent with foreign holidays, cars, iPhones and no end of consumer goods. I was born in 63 and have to wait 2 years longer for the state pension which is a 23 thousand tax raid on my retirement. If you start means testing wealth or asset that people cannot readily sell then people will plan to reduce it to avoid. Most pensioners are not well off and at 67 going up to 70 means testing the lowest pension provision in Europe. If you want to reduce welfare what about the 5.5 million economically inactive people of working age? It should be only in exceptional circumstances that someone of working age is not mandated to contribute work or service to society. Too many claim housing, benefits and health care without thinking others have worked to ensure it's there.

I wonder what Jack does for a living, I worked as a unskilled person for over fifty years worked long hours over sixty hours most weeks to bring up a family and was told my national insurance was taken in part to pay for my pension when I retired , now because I also have a small private pension I'm having to still pay tax. The youngster's to day have no idea , the reason this country is in such a state is because both Labour and the Tories have for the last twenty five years or so ran this country into the ground while they and their mates have got very rich it has nothing to do with the pensioners of this country. I wonder how often have you had blisters on your hands through hard work?

So working hard from school through to 40 years working means you will get less state pension than someone who has lived on benefits all their adult life?? Yeah that sounds about right 😂😂😂😂

Yes, another idiot trying to get a degree in plastic sandals or some other useless qualification, rather than getting out there and working, paying his taxes and contributing something useful to society and his OWN future pension.

You don’t understand how the pension system works. You think of it as being like a meal that you have paid for for yourself and that someone is now trying to take away from you. In actual fact, to use a restaurant analogy, the way it works is that every group of diners at a table has to pay for the meal that the previous diners at the same table ate, so your meal is actually being paid for by the people who are eating after you. That might all be fine if each group of diners is the same size and everyone eats the same meal. But what has actually happened is that the first group of diners were a table of 4 and had one course, your group (which consists of 8 diners) then paid their relatively small bill and split it 8 ways, your group of 8 then had a 3 course meal followed by port, your be try large bill is too be paid by the next group of diners which is only another 4 and have been told the kitchen is closing and can only serving salads. Would that seem like a fair arrangement to you?
