Great video eamonn, i live near the crossing in the video at 17.16, I have heard talk over the years that it was the deepest dig out on the whole line, underneath this bridge is a master piece of stonework. I will take some photos for you

My late granny would go on holiday to a small farm near Newtownbutler. And she would’ve gotten the train from Belfast through to Armagh and down into Clones. Where they then got a taxi.

Eamonn, This is terrific. I also viewed your Google maps tour of the line from Newry Edward St. to Markethill. These railways were closed in the era of Dr. Beeching. Todd Andrews in Dublin just aped the Beeching cuts and the Northern government followed suit. CIE always saw it as their brief to close railways at all costs. Together, these were formidable destructive forces. I would dearly love to see these lines reopened, but the cunning rail companies have a new plan called Greenways. In east Cork they are turning the line from Midleton to Youghal into a greenway lest they be prevailed upon to reopen it. Greenways are great where clearly a rail use is not viable. Apart from the RPSI and the ITG, rail preservation on this island is blocked - unlike the happier story in Britain. Isn't Google Maps just a brilliant means of charting disused lines? I love it. We can only dream of reopening.
