Holy smokes. As one who *loved* his Speccy, this is utterly incredible.

I just found out you exist and all this 1 bit music and the software you developed for making this stuff is simply amazing! I'll definitely go take a look at some of of it and I might even try making some of my own PC Speaker tunes!

Really nice reference to Martin Galways's ping-pong tune ! It really shows how much beeper engines evolved since this game was released almost 40 years ago !

Really great work. I’d actually love to hear these compositions using real instruments (or software emulation of real instruments). These are genuinely well written melodies.

Sounds are gorgeous and tracks are fluid. Nice and inventive music. Amazing work as usual. Sorry but i have a stupid question : could your work be played on a 1 bit Apple II speaker ? I remember Apple II could play some of the sounds i hear here.
@FavoritoHJS Жыл бұрын
In theory, it should be possible -- both the Apple II and the ZX Spectrum use a similar, entirely CPU driver approach for audio. In practice, that would require porting all the funky engines used, something which is probably quite hard...
@julienbraudel7109 Жыл бұрын
Merci pour la réponse. Thanks for the answer. Unfortunately, Apple II have so little new developpers, on the contrary on most of old platforms (ZX Spectrum, Amstrad, Amiga, Atari ST, C64..). Actual developpers use the Mockinboard card(s), which is like the ZX Spectrum/Amstrad/ST AY/YM.
@FavoritoHJS Жыл бұрын
Addemdum 08-01-24: their approaches are not identical! the apple ii clicks every time the sound memory address is accessed, even for reads! the spectrum has an io port for the ula, setting a bit on it will set the beeper high or low. these approaches are similar, but different enough that a one-to-one port of an existing engine would not work! such a port will access the speaker address, and thus switch the speaker, every time, even when it shouldn't be switched!

Are all of these using the same engine? They all sound like they're switching engines constantly (that's a complement). Spinning Bits is really an engine showcase, really amazing!
@shiru8bit Жыл бұрын
Yes but yes! All of these using the same engine, but the engine itself features 9 sub engines that can be seamlessly switched every row - the track always keep the same format and set of parameters, and the sub-engines store their variables in the same registers.

@@shiru8bit I legit listened to this album. It's a good variety of melodies and it does not sound bad to the ears at all. I wonder if someone could port it to the Atari GTIA sound, since the Atari 800 has a speaker attached to that specifically. The Graphics look like they could be brought 1:1 to the Atari to some degree....but I wonder how tight the timing is. Looks like it's screen-off time on Atari.....
@shiru8bit Жыл бұрын
@@AmstradExin I believe it is possible to port it to Atari, with a minor sound quality downgrade perhaps, but it is a quite dififcult task, as it is 9 engines in one, and they all have to be well tuned between each other. Still, should be doable.

sorry for annoying you again, but i tried to play the module files on 1tracker and it appears the ear shaver ex implementation there only support 7 engines while the songs use all 9, causing an out of bounds exception...

Just uploaded v0.45 to my website, it includes the latest ESEX engine, and the songs in the /example/.

...did you accidentally use black as the background of one of the engines (i think the tritone one?), or does it just not support background coloring?
@shiru8bit Жыл бұрын
I did it intentionally, the main engine that sounds most of the time (Earth Shaker-like) uses the black border, so the border stays black with occassional strips of various colors.
@AmstradExin Жыл бұрын
That's pretty cool! I guess you have to connect a real speaker to hear it like this. :D
