Every guitar course I ever took emphasized interval training as part of ear training. I never made any significant progress using this method so I'm excited to put into practice your method of ear training within my piano practice daily routine.

You can do this on guitar, too!

I love that my two hobbies - piano and singing -are so complementary. I just did something similar yesterday concentrating more on my voice and on matching the pitch. It's really great if it can help both for my voice and for training to play by ear !

It really helped me when you pointed out that all music is made of chords (blocked or broken) and scales (or parts of scales. Music can be endlessly complex, but remembering that fundamentally it is made of these basic components right there helps to begin to cut the overwhelming complexity down to size.🎹🎵

I am not sure I will completely drop computerized challenges of distinguishing between minor and major chords anytime soon. But I am willing to give your approach to ear training a go 🙂

I think you'll be pleased at the results, Jan! Think about little kids that play by ear - they don't spend any time with computer programs. They sit at a piano, hear something in their heads, then work on matching that sound on the piano. This is the most natural way. 😊😊

Dependance on sheet music or chord tabs is an obstacle to people realising their full musical potential so thanks for posting this. Personally, I was fortunate because I learned guitar by ear and had to (as a non music reader) develop my own ear training but I think I was subconciously doing a lot of what you are saying here.

I always aim to learn as close as possible to how children learn things, and I've never seen a child sit at a piano and practice memorizing intervals. So, it sounds like you did what came naturally, and that worked for you! 😊
