Oh, this is charming. How interesting it is to see such a lovely opera staged somewhere comparatively small. Gerald Finley makes a wonderful Papageno :)

""Only as many notes as necessary, Your Majesty." And every one of them heard here. At the right pitch and time. And yes, Finley does indeed play the glockenspiel himself, which is more than Schikaneder could do. (Benedikt Schakt, the first Tamino, was said to have played the flute solos himself, or maybe not.) Many, many thanks for this magnificent post.

"Grad so viel (Noten), Eure Majestät, als nötig sind." Diese Äußerung Mozarts gegenüber Joseph II. bezog sich auf die Entführung aus dem Serail. Der Ausspruch ist historisch aber nicht gesichert.

What a fascinating staging, very reminiscent of Ariane Mnouchkine's work! And Gardiner's lightness of touch is miraculous.

Magistral, grandiose.... Non. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, tout simplement.

Thank you for posting this fantastic performance! Everything about is brilliant, including the choreography and dancing. There is also a superb Don Giovanni from Concertgebouw conducted by JEG with Rodney Gilfry as Giovanni and Ildebrando d'Arcangelo as Leporello from 1994. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXPKn6iunstnnLs

Pardon me, but how are people in flesh tone body suits supposed to be flames of a raging fire in Act 2? It just doesn't pack the same punch as some other renditions of this opera do.

How about a little Molotov cocktail and a lighter?
@lindacowles7563 жыл бұрын
@@ssballs I'm not suggesting actual flames or explosive materials. In other productions, much was achieved with lighting and other things made to look like a fire actually burning.

This might have been inspired by Ingmar Bergman's version (you can find it on youtube). There it is actually quite scary; because I saw that film when I was very young, this is the scene that always comes to mind whenever I hear phrases such as "tortured in the flames of Hell". But what works on film doesn't necessarily work in a concert setting...
