@oluv's gadgets For no apparent reason when i talked about it in this very video and left a comment on the pinned thread here kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWixgJt9qcmtr5I telling you BEFORE the video what and why i was doing. You are two faced, a liar and a bully. Do you ever take responsibility for your own actions? Wrong firmware when thats how the speaker is sold, come on, you got yourself involved in a mess and now you want to blame everyone else. If you hadnt started bullying me with your personal attacks and comments on my video the next video would have been the update, and you knew that. You had to delete them though didn't you so nobody could follow the trail. Comment left by me to Olaf BEFORE i made this video. "Alan Ross Reviews 4 weeks ago @oluv's gadgets hope to get a video up tomorrow and i really tried to get this right putting aside all thats been said before. I did ask for an updated unit but they are saying the new production wont hit market till probably September. as i dont like recommending people update their units unless they have a compelling reason due to risk of bricking the speaker i am reviewing with your older firmware. I will give the new firmware a go once the review is out to see the difference. I have made it clear in the video my testing is with old firmware and you recommend the newer firmware. i will include a link to new firmware with video. I did ask earfun about how representative the older firmware is and they insist the difference is small, actually quoting a 3% difference 🤷‍♂ You might not like what I say but its simply my honest opinion and i know our tastes and ears are not quite in sync 🤗 I do think its a great speaker for the money they are asking, about $70, im just not as enthusiastic as you compared to more expensive options. I will ask for a second unit i think also as per your suggestion for a stereo test and also to check the differences between two. Oh i should also add i used three different eqs for the three different volumes i compared the Uboom vs the M+ at. That was just to be as fair as possible to both speakers. Also something to put into the mix is that uses aac even on android. This will also make it a bit more unpredictable on android. I dont touch apple so my testing was all done on android. Are you aware of any android vs apple differences?"

Ok .. In the end I took advantage of the price discount and bought 2x Earfun Uboom L speakers. I did a quick test before firmware upgrade and was not impressed, but OMG..., after upgrading both and listening to them connected, I'm speechless. I mean, for the price, to get that sound quality!? They're worth more than £70 each, and I still got them for £50 each. They sound amazing for the size and price. I couldn't be happier with the purchase. I highly recommend purchasing 2 speakers and update them with the tools provided in the description. (The way I updated them is: I downloaded both the software and the firmware file, opened the software, then connected the speaker to the PC in power off mode , using another cable, from the motion plus speaker, while holding the Bluetooth button pressed, then I followed the commands required by the software. It took a few seconds to update. I kept pressing the Bluetooth button all this time.)

Hi Alan Thank you for being so tollerant, realistic and honest. I have followed you both and I think you are the most reliable audio gadgets reviewers on the net. As always Oluv has done an excellent job here EQ-ing level by level. The problem is that the electronics (amplifier inside) is having trouble pushing the power for the bass punches. The higher level you set, the more is the whole audio dropping/sinking at the moments of bass punches. So you get the bass boost on frequency response graph, but it is only relative to the rest (mids & highs). In fact the real life listener experiences something like hiccups (power drops) instead of full scale punches. This is significant on high levels (70%-80%+). I have noticed several readers on his video sharing similar observations. Not sure if this is really a lack of power or an unwanted negative feedback on the amp. Obviously Earfun have attempted to address this by a firmware fix. Anyway it is a hardware limitation that is preventing the speaker from unfolding it's full potential at higher levels. All in all the speaker is really good but not perfect. No one is to be blamed maybe except for the electronic engineers at Earfun :)

The motion Plus seems to be a better performing and overall more rounded speaker. It has better (more pronounced) midrange and vocals, and not overly exaggerated highs. The Boom L can get tired listening after longer sessions to due to the exaggerated highs, lots of hissing sound at the high frequencies. If you do a quick AB test the Boom L can sound better to most people right away due to the brighter sound and highs. But the Boom seems to have better and more neutral tonality than the Motion, the Motion sounds colored and just different. If you want a step up in sound quality to both speakers that is more musical, clean, accurate, and better battery life (but don't mind sacrificing some portability)...go for the Audio Pro T3+ Awesome review as always Alan. I just recently got into bluetooth speakers and found your channel. Hope you continue releasing these unbiased reviews!

I have lots of weird artifacts on certain tracks where the speaker just can't handle bass and clarity, which becomes a mess. Playing on an EQ lowering bass really helps but it just sounds tiny sometimes, this is really a "good" speaker but not the hype everyone is talking about. Great review! It’s too bad you and Oluv got into that argument yesterday.. I just started reading it and then poof it was gone. I just find it weird that oluv used to praise the motion plus and now it’s “unlistenable” he’s also said that about a few other speakers since the earfun L. I know he tuned it and everything but you can’t just discredit other speakers you used to praise. Maybe he was just upset that the newer earfuns with the update aren’t out yet and the consistency of how all the speakers sounds are different. Can’t wait to hear what it sounds like after the update! Hope you two can work things out.

A Alan has kept it consistent but Olav in his recent video, was comparing it with the Uboom L and slating the Tribit Maxsound, and part of me was jokingly thinking, wow his really invested in the earfun, then I read his other touchy comments and find out he has some deal with them. @@alanrossreviews Well maybe... But now I have realised how important is to have a customisable EQ, so for as long as that's missing , it's gonna be a deal breaker. Oluv did a good job tuning the speaker for the instrumental jazz , possibly classical genre to which I think the V-shaped EQ is suited more, but I'm not a fan. The mids are very important when it comes to emphasizing the vocals . So why not give the people a personal choice?
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 2 жыл бұрын
i think thats the point people are missing. oluv tuned to this to his own ears, own room and own personal taste. it isnt flat despite preaching that for years. suddenly he defends that by saying its in line with loudness curves which is a total misunderstanding of loudness curves and how our ears work at different volumes. nobody goes to a live concert and eqs the sound in line with loudness curves because that would be madness, it is done at low volumes where we lose the dynamics in our ears.

@@alanrossreviews you may not be interested, but would you update the one you have instead of waiting till September? Earfun may not have taken oluv seriously over time and downplayed the update I wonder? They might not have liked reading these comments or watching his videos or his dealing with his perfectionist methods, maybe things went sour. But a 3% change I kind of doubt. If we look at how most Chinese or even American speakers are tuned / upgraded annually, do we really trust their sound engineers words on sound improvements? I don't think so. But I understand if not interested. After all this your just the only voice I trust other than his, personalities aside. I prefer your personal sound signature btw. And the updates he made I believe we're to tone down the treble and have better bass output. So the 2 main criticisms. Kind of underwhelming considering the "beef" that raised expectations for it.😄 Yep, it's a niche product better suited for certain genres/musical preferences. In fact, as you said, you can use a 3rd party app eq to bring those highs down in the Earfun, in outdoors mode that would be great considering how well tunned the bass is in that eq mode. The thing is, if we are talking about using an external eq app, it can be also aplied to the Motion+, to tune the bass, making it deeper and less boomy, with an overall better curve in the bass frecuencies, which i do with mine. With that, i think there is no point in buying the Earfun if you already have a M+, at least imo. A thing a really like about the UBoom L though, is how the sound is addapting to the different volume levels, those drivers are getting the best(?) sound they can without distorting, i'd love other brands could do that too. Well done mate you kept it professional and to the point. i got my Motion plus for 70 euro. and i can customize the sound to my ears . I don't hear a huge difference here, however to motion Plus did sound a little droney and Uboom l sounded a little clearer . For electronic music with auto tune and similar effects the difference is not too big, a SMP with +6db sounds more impressive. With vocals, blues, soul, funk, classical music, it is noticeable that the Uboom L is one of the few devices that reproduce instruments and voices almost undistorted and cleanly separated. This only works in total with this balanced sound tuning. Setting 80 Hz higher, or 120, 140 whatever, shifts the entire sound image. I commit myself: For serious, critical listening, there is no way around the Uboom L in this size (note the difference in weight to the SMP, for example). And I understand Oluv that he is mightily annoyed: EarFun has not managed to attach the FW correctly. Unfortunately, the L does not sound 100% convincing ex-factory with this overemphasis of the treble. The FW update is inevitable to fully enjoy the effort invested by Oluv. And I deliberately say enjoy: The treble is corrected (tamed), the low frequency slightly fuller, smoother. This difference is certainly noticeable in measurements. Actually, it is an impertinence of EarFun, since the difference between standard and HiFi is in the fine tuning. I do not want to take sides with anyone, nor criticize anyone, but what is right must remain right. Alan I hope EarFun will provide you a second unit that you can sacrifice for a FW update. A comparison would be sensational! I have patched two devices (in TWS really impressive) one after the other, the sonic difference especially with those annoying upper treble is clear. Finally, I think it's a shame that many things are brought to the personal track, so I think it's very good how objective and neutral you have designed this comparison test here. For future videos, I would like to see more demanding music included, even if that might not be easy in terms of licensing. With instruments and familiar voices, you can hear distortions and detail reproduction more clearly. I still prefer the Denon Envaja or the Tribit Mega for some tracks. Mercedes, Porsche, Jeep... ;) depending on the occasion. In terms of authenticity and detail reproduction I see and hear currently with ~650 grams weight no better alternative on the market, provided the "right" FW is on it. (Finally, one must also admit the EQing of the SMP). Congratulations to Oluv, screwed up by EarFun. ☮️

I finally read a comment with more knowledge (for what i see). If the fw update fixes the tunning as you say, i would definetly buy it, despite it doesn't have the best hardware given the size, and the bass doesn't go deep enough. I currently use poweramp with a Motion+ to make it sound better in the bass, upper mids and treble, increasing the separation and details (at least in my ears), and if the Uboom L has that without a 3rd party app, then it is a nice choice (also i'm sorry if i write something weird, still learning english). I am new in this "good sound" thing, but i understand what a "good" tunning is, and enjoy it. I would like to have an EQ in the L if i buy it though, like in the Motion Boom where you can save different ones, because i also enjoy a warmer sound, or more powerfull, depending of the moment.

They said they would send me a new unit when they hit in September. 😭 i will of course just update the one i have then but not quite yet, im not here for the flame wars even if i dont shy away from them when they come knocking on my door. However i need my chill time, if i dont enjoy youtube then no point in me being here. i understand the requests for traditional instruments and vocals. My youtube is a reflection of me and im not a purist, you have Oluv for that and i am much more forgivng when it comes to Bluetooth portables, i do not believe you can judge them the same as you would high end audio. so i do understand and appreciate the requests to be a bit more fine tuned in my critique and testing but given how long my videos already are with my current methodology its not a road i want to go down. i believe for the majority of people and the way they will use these speakers my testing covers most bases. we need lots of people testing speakers and giving opinions from different perspectives so we can build a good overview, i am just another voice. 👍

Release date X so people get all excited. Then people start leaving their email addresses behind for a voucher. Now comes the part that worries me the most. Oluv/Olaf saying that the drivers changed. So actually everyone bought a different speaker than what was shown in the videos. There is absolutely no comparison in my mind, once again. The Soundcore was of course EQ'd to be warmer, but with the separate tweeters, the highs stay rock-solid and don't get that annoying rasp that comes from pushing all kinds of other frequencies out of the same drivers as the treble. Bottom line, the UBoom L sounds like a little speaker; it comes across as tinny and harsh, not "clear". The Motion + is capable of sounding intuitively like a much, much bigger speaker with the right EQ, and has decent stereo separation and soundstage which still outperforms other speakers in its class. I genuinely hope one day we get a true, hands-down upgrade for the Motion +, even if its a bit more expensive.

Hi Alan, did you update the fw? It appears that there was a problem with fw on production units and Oluv provided the new fw and tools to update it
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 2 жыл бұрын
no thats not accurate and i addressed this in the video. as far as earfun are concerned the difference between old and new firmware is minimal. There was no problem as such, just Oluv tuned a single unit and the normal speaker variance he decided was too much and he wanted to retune it. i made it clear in the video i am using old firmware because that is how earfun are selling it and any firmware update carries a risk of bricking the speaker. new firmware will be stock around september only because so many people asked for it after Oluv said it required the new firmware to sound good. My impression is that earfun would have been happy with the old firmware. i am going to try and geta second unit and update that one and then compare.

One thing that I thought would sound better is to start the rise at 8khz intead of 6khz to take some edginess off and reduce a bit of sibilance. The UBOOM sounds better in outdoor mode at low volumes, at least through my headphones. Indoor sounds far too bright for my tastes and gets worse as volume increases. Each track with a kick drum make it very very obvious. It just doesn't thump with the UBOOM. The motion plus maintains the low end better as volume increases and pulls ahead for me. check my ig where i posted them. this was a follow up to oluvs trashing of the motion plus vs the uboom. the point was normally i try and keep things simple. one eq for all volumes while assuming the end user will tailor to their use. My eq is normally set at 65% where for me the real world fun listen begins., i push the bass because a little bit of distortion is a fair trade off for more bass in my world. however for anyone who hasnt followed me before they wont understand that my eq is a general eq and does not do well at lower volumes where the speaker itself boosts bass. because of how unfair and biased oluvs comparison was i decided to use more balanced eq so people can best understand the differences between these speakers. that means a different eq for each volume to keep the balance of the sound and to keep the bass under control.

I currently have HK Go & Play, JBL Partybox 100 and Souncore Motion + at home. Today my collection will be enlarged with Uboom L and on Thursday with Stormbox Blast. I want to upload the latest firmware and check for myself how much this speaker is worth. I'm a geek when it comes to bluetooth speakers and I like watching your reviews, Alan and the Oluv's channel. I would like to add that I had a Teufel Boomster before and recently I tested the new Teufel Boomster 2021. Quite an interesting speaker, but compared to the HK, the bass seems a bit out of the box (not always) and at higher volume levels the DSP increases the decibels, reducing the bass range.

@@alanrossreviews Today I got my Uboom L. I didn't upload the new firmware, because program want to find the speaker under Winfows 11. In my personal opinion, Uboom L relates to Motion Plus as well as Tribit Stormbox to Partybox 100. Uboom L has less power, but it sounds nicer and is more consistent at about 60% volume. Above this level, you can hear the lack of power. Motion, despite separate tweeters, has some flaws in the spectrum and response - it's hard for me to say what, but it is less enjoyable to listen to.

@@alanrossreviews I believe it all depends on your sound preferences. There are people who will buy a speaker and will be satisfied, no matter if it is Uboom L, Motion Plus or JBL. By the way, I received the Tribit Stormbox Blast. I quickly compared it to HK Go & Play and I'm surprised how well it plays. So far I have compared it to about 60% of the volume. In the days I will compare the exterior with the HK, also with the HK power supply connected from the 19V powerbank and with the speaker grille removed from the front of the loudspeaker (clearer treble).

An excellent, factual and constructive review as always Ross. Having purchased the uboom L, my experience was very much in line with yours. Personal attacks and blatant bullying to fair reviewers just should not be happening. It's been a shock and wake up call that product representatives need to have a social responsibility. It's not the first time the representative has lashed out at feedback and it hasn't gone unnoticed. While I was somewhat satisfied with the product (grateful for a stereo speaker), I can't in good faith faith endorse or even support it. I see that Earfun have a generous return policy which is appreciated. I hope the love and support of your fans Alan pull you through what must be a stressful (and undeserved) experience. The new firmware from oluv has more bass, because the final speaker got a better driver. I bricked my second uboom L, but got it back working. I think it was, that I long pressed power button and Bluetooth button again, after the firmware writing began(new firmware of course). So it was possible to Unbrick the speaker. But I’m not completely sure. But it sounds really good now. But still having a hard time against two bose flex. Uboom L has much more punchy bass and it can go lower than the Bose, but still, it’s less bass than the Bose. But really, the upgrade is worth it. And trying out two uboom L in stereo. Really. Oh, I forgot, the highs are better too after the update on the uboom L. Not so harsh.

Now the tool should show your speaker as ready. Load the firmware to the tool, click replace and then on the start button. It then starts to write the new firmware to your speaker. I’d like to understand why many in the comments are talking trash about oluv and the uboom, since Alan’s judgment is overall positive. You see, that’s the problem. This childish attitude just lead to nonsense conversations about sound quality. The fact that you can get the speaker for this cheap and you can make it better (or fix it in some cases) by udpating the firmware on your own doesn’t seem to me a reason to criticize the product. I personally don’t like the soundcore motion + because of its boomy and not refined sound, so this speaker seems a good alternative for a cheaper price. Peace ✌🏻

I think they are commenting with in mind oluvs trolling in the comments till he deleted them all. As far as Oluv goes, the reason people are talking trash about him, is because he left some disrespectful insults towards Alan, and was being egotistical in a thread that is now deleted (per himself of course) Most people ain’t gonna take to kind to that. As for the UBoom, most of the comments ain’t been straight up trashing it (maybe 2-3 at the most) the general consensus is that it’s a decent speaker worthy of its price, it’s just by hyped up like it’s the holy grail when it’s not. In my opinion, the speaker with Oluv tuning sounds very good. I use the speaker for lower volume with laptop and lcd. The sound is neutral with wide stage and enough bass, not to much. Perfect for documentations, movies and of course music. Android phone with HiBy Music App (DirectSound) and only high quality files (no yt downloads). The problem nowadays is the over-compressed music and a generation with distorted ears. If you always listen to music with way too much bass, the ears acclimate it.

Great review, as always, Alan! I returned mine. I'd bought it hoping it could replace my Motion+ (mainly used as desktop speaker due to low latency and aux-in) and Soundcore Boost (travel speaker), but it can't do either as well as those. It sounds (and looks) worse than the Motion+ and is way bigger than the Boost - weighed in around 750g, not the 650g stated, and is far bulkier - I'd rather take the Motion+ or Stockwell 2 if I have that much room in my luggage! Also, the update situation is ridiculous. I did it, but what a faff, and an absolute joke that they don't supply the right cable. But despite all of that, and Oluv's disgraceful behaviour on here, I'd have kept it if it sounded great, but it's nothing special. Ok around 50-60% volume, but outside of that range, nah, not for me. And no ability to eq it, you just have the normal mode which is subdued, and the outdoor mode which is overblown - the highs, in particular, ruin it. The little Soundcore Boost, whilst far from perfect, always puts a smile on my face due to its bass response. I don't choose a travel speaker for it's neutrality (not that the Uboom L even sounds neutral) if I did I'd bring the Maxsound+, I want something that punches above its weight and sounds fun. If I want a bigger sound than that I have the Motion+ or Boom, if I want a more neutral response I have the Stockwell 2. Perhaps if you had no other Bluetooth speaker you could make a decent case for this at the £50-70 mark, but all of Oluv's fanboys lapping this up are a joke - if ever there was a case of Emperor's new clothes...

the reason to buy this speaker is because you want something costing around £60, then its a reasonable option. But yeah something like the stockwell is a different league. The problem for this speaker is not the sound its the hype. Apparently being returned in droves. Hype is good, over hype is a killer. Mine weighs in at 730g, i wonder if there are different versions of this speaker knocking around.

@@alanrossreviews I know about them, they are a bit hard to come by and since I am in the EU they are a bit more expensive than what I would like to spend. I will have to think about it, thank you for your answers, I'll keep watching your channel it's very entertaining.

@@alanrossreviews That's sad. I hope the new firmware will be more balanced 🤔

they say the treble is a tiny bit smoother and slightly more bass but the difference is not huge.

uboom l or motion+ ? i had motion+ and loved it. i liked to use it for micro parties on the beach or in the room. im listening a lot of electronic music but also the other genres. how much less bass is there on the uboom l compared to motion+ ? how about the battery life - which one last longer?

Problem with the uboom is there is a big variance between them so you cant be sure if it wil be bass heavy or bass light. Personally i prefer the motion plus at higher volumes, uboom for lower volumes

Hey Alan there is 00.36 firmware for Soundcore Motion Boom Plus they called it high frequencies fixes! Let us know what you think about it! I have xtreme 3 as well and honestly I want to like Boom Plus but quality is not exactly the same for me ...
