I think it's important to note how serious these questions really are. The reason Trinitarian questions and questions about the forgiveness of those who have fallen away from the faith are so important because they change the value of Christ's sacrifice. If Christ is less important in the Trinity, then the incredible statement that God gave up his infinite power and surrendered unto death for the sake of all mankind loses some of its importance. If there is a sin which can't be forgiven, then the sacrifice of Christ to cancel all sins, has limitations. If you are the Church with the belief that you hold the most important truth that has ever been revealed to man, then how you talk about that truth is incredibly important.

There seems to be a misconception about Donatus petitioning Constantine being out of the ordinary, and that it invited imperial interference into the church. Donatus petitioned Constantine because of course that's exactly what a Roman citizen having a dispute on matters of divinity was expected to do. Constantine was, like ALL Roman emperors since Augustus, Pontifex Maximus. He was therefore the ultimate religious authority in the Empire. Christians had previously never petitioned emperors simply because theirs had been an underground religion, especially during Diocletian's persecution. When Constantine normalized Christianity he was simply including the sect into the Imperial register of recognized cults, right next to Mithraism and the worship of Sol Invictus (which Constantine seems to have attempted to syncretize with the Christian God). This normalization gave adherents of the faith formal rights to petition the Emperor on religious matters, and Donatus simply exercised his newfound right.

To quote the Monty Pythons "Here comes Jesus, preaching this wonderful moral philosophy about tolerance and compassion and we spend 2000 years slaughtering eachother, because we can't agree on how he said it"
@Mathignihilcehk
@Mathignihilcehk 8 жыл бұрын
+weldonwin Except Jesus never preached tolerance. "I did not come to bring peace, but a sword". His teachings were intended to split families, cities, and even countries over whether or not to follow them. Add that to "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the father, except by me" line he kept spouting... Granted, he did say love your enemies, and quite a bit against murder or hatred. There's a process for dealing with heretics, which ends in "treat them as a pagan"... considering we are supposed to be a light to the world, and basically lead pagans towards that light, slaughtering them all is a little contradictory. In short, he did preach against slaughtering each-other, but not for tolerance... I mean, unless your definition of tolerance is "don't murder"... in which case, yeah... it's just silly to say he preached to accept each-other's beliefs, and live in harmony. He said pretty much the opposite.

Same here. I'm not quite sure if it's a thing God even really meant for man to understand (at least on this Earth), but that was described in a pretty simple and straightforward way, while also acknowledging that it is, in reality, way more complex and confusing, and we still aren't in agreement on what it really is.

The thing is, can god's sacrifice be ligit? If gods don't die, can a god sacrifice his son, that is him, so, immortal? Could a man really has his sins forgiven by a sacrifice of a undying god, half spirit half flesh? Would not the importance of Christ only be real if he was but a human being? With soul and individual fate? And what about the Essenes education of Jesus? Could Christ just be a context of religious education+political orientation?
@brothapipp
@brothapipp 8 жыл бұрын
Ivan Mota Yes it can be legit. "If gods..." You are using a condition on God, that you use for gods, further more you presume to know the condition of God or of gods which is based of a limited human understanding. Yes a man is forgiven. It was important because he was a man. and then i lose you. and not trying to hate, but i didn't follow where you were going from "soul and individual fate"

I love this series! Arcane religious debates are some of the most fascinating pieces of our history because they remind us of a simple but easily overlooked truth: Sacred texts were written about the problems of the day...many of them things the macroculture hasn't cared about for several hundred years. Many religions have ancient roots, and some of the traditions come down to us from thousands of years ago, but, for the most part, religion is a thing of the NOW - it's constantly moving, breathing, reshaping....just like it was 900 years ago - and, someday, someone will be talking about our great religious debates as strange, arcane, almost meaningless relics. Religion is such a beautiful thing

As for Constantine braking the divide between church and state that is not entirely correct. It is the first time an Emperor meddled into the politics of the CHRISTIAN Chruch, but even before that all of those pagan Cults were practically subservient to the Emperor because he held the highest titles and it was common to deify the previous Emperor if the current one inherited the title from the previous one. Hell the reason Christians were persecuted was that as Monotheists they directly rejected the divinity of the Emperors and for Romans that was akin to treason. We even have to than Diocletian for the majority of "BAD" ideas that people often quote about the middle ages. Things like Rulers being appointed by god (or gods in his case) as their regent on Earth, so any disagreement is heresy. So it was the first time ROman rulers meddled in the affairs of this faith, but by that point that was norm for others.

My personal view of the trinity is that it's something like water. Water can be a liquid, a solid or a vapor, and all three states are different, and have different properties, but they're all still H20. You can not torture the spirit or the father as you can the son, in the same way you can break ice but not liquid or gas. They're made of the same thing, but have wildly different properties. None of superior to other, just tailored for different situations.

MadnerKami Tell me, could you enter an ant hill? You are far greater than ants, but if you were to enter an ant hill, the ant hill would be destroyed. It is too small to contain you, your presence in it would destroy it. God is the same way. The father is too great for this world to "contain". His presence would shatter every natural law, as he is above time and space. For our own sake, for the sake of maintaining the laws of the universe itself, he has to adopt a form the can "fit". It is not to say he could not enter our world as the father if he so wished, but to do so would by his very nature, undo every rule and law this world has...

Thank you so much for this series. As a practicing Christian, and employed minister of said faith, it is nice to see a series handle such a complicated and difficult subject in a manner that is both respectful of the history and the faith. My lifelong dream is to become a doctor of theological history, so I spend an extra amount of time studying these subjects, and I must say, this is one of the best presentations I have ever seen on early Christian schisms.

For an under 2 minute explanation, that wasn't a bad explanation of The Trinity. There's of course more depth (enough to fill plenty of lectures) but that's a decent explanation of one of the more confusing aspects of Trinitarian Christian Faith. Also can't wait for the talk of the Council of Nicaea. Considering we still are feeling its effects today it's a great topic to talk about.

+Cobalt Conqueror Okay so this is the best way I have heard the trinity being explained, if you ever bring it up with your muslim friend again, The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not to be understood as being three Gods, but as three forms in One, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The same way that water (H2O) is only one element, but can take three different forms, solid form in ice, liquid form as water, and gaseous form in evaporation, so also can God be understood as being One yet having three forms in this trinity concept. And even this explanation is not to be understood as something perfect to describe what God is truly like, God should still be understood more of as a mystery

But sorry if you're too frail and sensitive to handle that. Sheesh. Regarding understanding how the Internet works, it isn't just that I personally don't understand it. It is a fact that nobody can TRULY wrap their mind around the Stack (as Benjamin Bratton likes to call it). It has gotten too big and complex for the human mind. Any expert on the matter (such as Bratton) would (and do) agree with that.
