The first and maybe the most important thing to know about early miscarriage is that is extremely common. Between 50 to 60% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. Of those, about half are very early miscarriages which often occur before a woman even knows she is pregnant.
An early miscarriage is defined as a pregnancy loss that occurs during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. But really, most early miscarriages occur before your doctor can see a fetus with heart motion on an ultrasound which is typically around 7 to 8 weeks.
The good news is that if you have an early pregnancy and are experiencing vaginal bleeding, but your doctor can see fetal heart motion on ultrasound, 95% of those pregnancies will go on to result in a viable baby.
A slow heart rate on ultrasound, however, is a concerning sign. A slow heart rate is seen in nearly 70% of early miscarriages. Stated another way, the likelihood of having an early miscarriage is 30 times higher if the ultrasound shows a low heart rate. A slow heart rate in combination with vaginal bleeding is seen in 85% of early miscarriages. How slow is slow? If the measured heart rate is less than 110 bpm, then that is of concern
A number of things can cause an early miscarriage. The most common cause is the embryo or fetus does not have the correct number of chromosomes. A normal fetus has 46 chromosomes, 23 from each parent. 60-70% of early miscarriages are found to have an incorrect number of chromosomes. As women get older, this number gets higher. So older women are more likely to have a miscarriage and any given miscarriage is more likely to be from a chromosome problem.
Other things that probably increase the- risk for early miscarriage include:
-- Smoking
-- Drinking Alcohol
-- Caffeine
-- Obesity
-- Taking supplements (other than prenatals)
Things that do NOT cause early miscarriage include
-- Stress
-- Having sex during pregnancy
-- Exercise during pregnancy
-- Using birth control before pregnancy
-- Falling during pregnancy
-- Getting hit in the abdomen
-- Morning sickness
In fact, women with morning sickness have a lower risk of miscarriage.
The most common signs and symptoms of early miscarriage are vaginal bleeding and cramping. However, these symptoms are also pretty common in women who do not go on to have an early miscarriage.
If you are pregnant and have bleeding, please contact your doctor for further evaluation. Your doctor will want to get a blood test to measure your hCG levels and an ultrasound. This is important to do because some women with early pregnancy bleeding may actually have a tubal pregnancy which is less common but much more dangerous.
One of the most common questions I get asked is: Can an early miscarriage be prevented? The answer depends on whether your are already pregnant. If you are not pregnant and you are trying to prevent an early miscarriage in your next pregnancy, then there are a number of things you can do.
Stop those bad habits, Avoid alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine. If you are overweight - lose weight. If you are older, ask your doctor about IVF combined with testing the embryos for chromosome abnormalities.
If you have had multiple early miscarriages, meaning three or more, see you doctor to be evaluated for recurrent pregnancy loss. There may be treatable problems that can be found
If you are already pregnant, besides the things I discussed before, there is probably not much you can do. Bed rest will not help. Avoiding stress will not help though it may make you feel better. Taking progesterone supplements have been recommended in the past but there really is very little evidence that it will reduce the chance for an early miscarriage. But, it probably won’t harm anything.
Another question I get all the time is: How soon can you try to conceive after having had a miscarriage? In the past, doctors told patients, without any evidence, to wait at least three months. However, we have solid scientific data that shows; attempting pregnancy again right away, as soon as you start ovulating will increase the chance for a successful pregnancy. This could happen within a few weeks of an early miscarriage.
Finally, if you need fertility treatment to conceive, we recommend that you evaluate the uterine cavity before starting treatment again.

I used to work overnights and drink coffee in my 1st month because I didn't know I was pregnant. After some time I had a really bad stomach acid and took medicines for stomach pain (still unaware of my pregnancy). I miscarried at 9w 6d. I had blood work done every few days due to a subchorionic hematoma. Had ultrasounds, heartbeat was beautiful, and strong. Subchorionic hematoma completely absorbed and healed itself. Went for my 10w appointment at 9w 6d and there wasn't a heart beat. They said it had to of just happened, because baby was exactly where it was supposed to be. I had felt a sharp pain throughout the night at 5am, so I'm assuming the pain was the heartbeat stopping 😔. I got pregnant 6 months later. Miscarried at 5w5d. I got pregnant 2w after that miscarriage, without even having a period first, and knew exactly the day I ovulated. It was a chemical pregnancy. Here I am, 3 losses later and now clue what the heck is going on, because everything is fine. Bloodwork is always fine, besides this last time, my progesterone was very low and only at 5, and they wanted to see it at 25. It has never been low like that before. I immediately got on progesterone and low dose asprin and my 2nd day taking it (literally 1 hour after taking it) , I started to miscarry. Over this. I've been trying for almost 2 years and have had 3 losses in the last 8 months. It took 10 months to get pregnant with my first miscarriage. I started taking Myo Inositol & D-Chiro and got pregnant right away, and have had no problem getting pregnant since. Yet none of the embryos are healthy, I guess. What's insane is that I have a very healthy almost 4 year old and my pregnancy was completely fine the entire time with him. I've been taking prenatals for a year if not, more. I only have 1 coffee per day. Other than that, I only drink water. I eat healthy. I drink a probiotic every morning to help my digestion. I have no idea what could be wrong. I'm so tired of this.

Hi, I had a miscarriage when I was 4 months pregnant. About 15 hours before I had the miscarriage I contacted my doctor's office and I told the nurse that I had severe lower abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding and back pain. I told the nurse that I lower abdominal pain was so bad that I couldn't even stand up to take a step. The nurse told me that the pain was normal because the uterus was growing.... The pain kept getting worse until I couldn't take it anymore I rushed to the ER, I miscarriage as soon as walked in the ER room. The thing that bother me so much is that my gynecologist and this nurse that I visited with knew that I was do for a miscarriage anytime. Two weeks after I had the miscarriage the doctor told me that the *squad screen* came back so high that it was just no way that my baby was going to make. They knew that I was going to have a miscarriage and didn't tell me. Not even because I told the nurse my symptoms she didn't stop for a second to assume that I was having signs of a miscarriage. What would it you do if you were that nurse? Would you have me come in to at least check me?

I had a miscarriage at five weeks and four days. I’m also using donor eggs, the embryos were genetically tested, all came back very good. I’ve gone through hysteroscopy, and Endo scratch, IVF medications, acupuncture and still had a miscarriage. They may be some relationship between your exposure to his cigarette smoke. Some studies from IVF found that men who drank alcohol produced higher miscarriage rates in their partners. I am not aware of any information that ultrasound pressure will increase the risk of miscarriage

I have had 2 miscarriages back to back the first time we didn't no but the second time I was 4 to 5 weeks and was told by the OB that my progesterone was 0 the next day the bleeding started with the 2nd miscarriage what can I do if the OB want give me progesterone to support a pregnancy my husband and I want a baby of pirs we both have kids from previous marriages . I had a MC in March and d&cin April. We started trying our 2nd cycle in June and got pregnant in July but it ended in a chemical and then we august, this month as well but that also ended in a chemical. What kind of supplements should we avoid prior to pregnancy? I'm taking a bunch of supplements recommended in the book It starts with the egg and I just had an early miscarriage of 8 weeks, although I stopped most of the supplements once i had a positive pregnancy test. I take prenatal, coq10, vit E, vit C, vit D, probiotics and DHEA since I have low ovarian reserve. Thank you

Me too I take, almost all the same even with cod liver oil pills, Vita and C, and B12 but will definitely put it on pause and just take my prenatal vitamins and my folic acid because I just had a miscarriage last month 💔and are ttc RN as I am in my fertility window and I am in my mid 40's, I also believe in my higher God and he will make the last decisions, I pray for healthy babies for us all🙏🏼🙏🏼

I had 3 miscarriages for the last 3 years. 2 miscarriages this year at week 8 (had normal heartbeat at week 6 and 8) and week 5. My first miscarriage was in 2016 and it was about 6 weeks. I have all the tests done for me and my partner. There is no reason found about us except that the 2nd mc happened due to trisomy13. This was found after the tissue was sent for testing after d&c. I have never smoked or drunk alcohol ever in my life. Have a very limited caffeine intake and I only drink tea in the morning and afternoon. I don't take any other medications except pregnancy vitamins. I am really devastated as doctors cannot find a reason. Please assist what I should do next?

at 6 weeks my baby had a fast heartbeat. I was told the heart beat of a "girl". I started showing miscarriage at 11 weeks. I wish I had known before, how much blood will come with a miscarriage. It did not stop bleeding for a week and I was in fear I could pass out. I did not get this information from any doctor or other person, so please tell people about the procedure. When it’s happening they mostly are home alone.

I've had 3 chemical pregnancies in the past year and a half. My husband and I have been trying for 2 years and 8 months. We've been to a fertility specialist and they say we have unexplained infertility. They say nothing is "wrong" with us. I'm not sure what to do now.
