lol! I don't know how else to convey it. Too often I see people getting so caught up on focusing on fish that would just not bite. Coho salmon is a funny species, they can turn on and off with the slightest change in conditions. They're so interesting to learn yet so frustrating at times too.
@grimskull416
@grimskull416 Жыл бұрын
@@FishingwithRod it is definitely hard to convey, especially if you are trying to share your experiences and advice to newer anglers! One day fish seem to bite exactly what you throw out, but the next time under what seems to be same conditions they're not interested at all. I think there's a bit more scientific technicalities behind the scenes, but until we find out what it is, we just have to keep trying different stuff or look for a different spot/day!

Great video rod. I’ve had pretty good luck with soft and hard beads as well this year. Where do you get 15g DNE floats? The lightest I can ever find is the 20g ones

@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
Yeah here in BC they are often called springs. I try not to do that in the videos since they get watched internationally but it just comes up from old habit. The name comes from that their run timing usually starts in the spring months I think.

@@FishingwithRod - Wow, I thought chinook spawn in the fall. That’s what happens here in New York. They come into the rivers from Lake Ontario.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
They don't spawn in the spring. The run timing for some stocks starts in the spring because they have a long way to go. For example, historically we'd see chinook salmon start entering the Fraser River in March and April, and these fish are travelling a couple thousands km's to reach their spawning ground, and spawning would take place in late summer/early fall.

@@FishingwithRod - Cool! Guess the Lake Ontario fish do all of their pre-spawn weight lifting, putting on makeup, curling their hair (scales), and smoking cigarettes in the lake, and then just get it over with as soon as they hit the rivers. BC salmon have to really work for it!

With the chinook salmon, perhaps, the rod is underrated and I didn't to tow them around and disrupt other people's fishing. With the coho, the main issue is usually that they're simply escape artists. Rather than just a straight tug, they tend to jump, roll, dart toward you etc, the hook often just get dislodged when that tension is lost.

That's correct, I always adjust my float depth so whatever my presentation is, it is one or two feet off the bottom. I don't want to be bouncing bottom, dulling up my hook, snagging on the bottom or worse, snagging a fish.

It’s weird but I found that baitcaster setup loses more fish than spinning setup. I have two almost identical Gloomis float fishing rods, both 10’6”, weighted 6-12lb for the baitcaster rod and 6-10lb for the spinning rod. The reels I paired with these rods have almost the same retrieve speed - 41 inch/crank for the baitcaster reel and 40 inch/crank for the spinning reel. My landing ratio for the spinning rod is 90%, but only 50% for the baitcaster rod😂 I think spinning reel gives a better fighting position. I landed a 30 lb chinook with that spinning rod and it was a manageable fight. But a 15 lb chinook landed with the baitcaster at the same spot felt like a torture for my wrist…
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
For me it really depends on the day. On some days, I do really well with the baitcaster/float rod, on other days, the spinning rod/lure casting works out better. Take this season for example, I was doing way better with the spinning rod early on, but this past week, I lost all of my fish on the spinning rod while landing just about every fish on the float/baitcasting rod.

Often when I go everyone is float fishing so I sometimes wonder if I'm doing it wrong. Or can both methods be productive in the same waters? Thanks, I love your videos!

The hookup ratio can be pretty dismal on those pegged beads unfortunately. I had similar struggles last season losing lots of fish in the first few seconds with bead because fish never hooked up. I'm trying just having the bead directly on the hook dangling. Tight lines

I have noticed with bead fishing if you do more of a reel set rather then a hard hook set with your rod the hook tends to stick better. Also it seems the less I horse on the fish and the more I loosen my drag and let the fish run the more I tend to land. Might just make me have more confidence but maybe try it if your having trouble losing fish

Hi Rod, the water level at the Vedder has been so low and now with the rain finally coming. I was wondering if this will extend the season with more new fish coming in? The other day, I was fishing nearby the hatchery and there were still plenty of fresh Springs being caught. The same with plenty of fresh Cohos and the Chums too. Like I’ve always been intrigued of how water level and rain helps with assisting fish get to where they are trying to go
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
From my experiences, I've always found tha despite of low water, these fish are going to move in as long as there is 1 foot or 2 of water. Most of that movement happens at night. This year we are seeing the extreme of those conditions, and we're blown away by the amount of fish that have still made it to the hatchery. We have a huge incoming tide in less than a week from now, and I think that's when we will see another good push of coho salmon. The best coho salmon fishing I've had always happened in the last week of October and first week of November. The coho salmon run typically tapers off around the second week of November, and I would expect to see the same this year. I don't think we'll see the run time extended because of the conditions we've had in the first half. That said, I have been wrong many times in the past about nature, you just never know what's going to happen.

bead landing ratio is noticeably worse than roe I've found, thoughts Rod?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
Yeah there are some days when they definitely just pop off left and right. We've been talking about this in the past few weeks on why this is happening, and how different style of rigging would improve that etc. Still working on it. When we used to target trout and char with beads, the landing ratio was fantastic. One thought is that the ways salmon and trout bite are quite different. One is mainly to ingest food (trout) while the other is more of an attack (salmon). Perhaps that may influence that landing success.

A thought I was recently on a guided steelhead trip on the island having a similar issue just not even hooking the fish. The guide looked at my set up and said he runs a size 1 hook with a 12mm bead for steelhead who are not hooks shy. But was thinking of upping my hook size for salmon this year obviously not going to crazy with size as salmon can be a little more spooky. But thought it would be worth a shot. You will see the river more than me this year so figured id pass it on if it works let me know.

Hey Rob, great video! Two questions: Is a 25g float still too heavy for coho, I have ppl catching to my left and right while I typically don't hit. I think my float is not sensitive enough. Do I give myself a better chance of landing coho with a bigger hook than a 1 or 1/0. Thanks Rod, keep it up!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
I think that'd be up to individuals to find that "sweet spot". I personally tend to stick with 20g or less floats, size 1 or 2 hooks. Others do just fine with 25g floats, bigger or smaller hooks, etc. Give the smaller floats a try if you are missing bites.

Hey Rod, I managed to get a coho the other day at last light in the canal. I noticed the chum salmon numbers are way higher. Last year I barely seen any, this year there is way more and I'm seeing people snagging them with their coho rods. Is it already pre determined chum will remain closed?
@FishingwithRod

The chum salmon closure could be changed, but the estimate in the next couple of weeks would have to go up quite a bit before that happens. There are definitely a lot more fish than last year which is great, but I think the low river is giving that perception that there are more fish than we think there are. The run is still considerably smaller than what we saw a decade or two ago.
