In this video I cover the various repair approaches for the cowl vents when rusted. The '65-'68 Mustangs have the same cowl vents. The approach selection depends on an assessment of the extent of the rust in the cowl vent area. I then cover the way I chose to do it on my '67 Mustang project. I explain why it is so important to assess this area when considering purchasing a Mustang, and also why it is vital to repair this area sooner rather than later. I provide some leads to good repair info from other sources.
I also cover debris removal from the cowl vent area, and ideas for keeping water and debris out in the future. Finally, I explain a unique method for keeping the rust from ever spreading again.
Below I list times for the various sections of the video, if you desire to save time in finding the information you are interested in:

Going to attack this on my 67 soon. Thinking about removing the fender, cleaning out drain port good and coating in the internal cowl area with Eastwood Internal Frame Coating via the drain port and via the cowl vents on top. That product come with a flexible tube that sprays the coating in a 360 degree pattern

Sounds like a good idea and perhaps a way to prevent ever having to replace the cowl.

As a person who has owned SIX different mustangs in his long life and currently own THREE I say a big FUCK YOU to Ford for designing the cowl panels the way they did. In fairness, though, they had NO IDEA that some FIFTY years later all the aging boomers would be pulling them out of junkyards and rebuilding them. My 1965 coupe lives in the garage and I have a plastic cover over the vent openings that I bought from one of the mustang part places on internet. I am going to shoot some Cavity Wax Plus into the cowl in the near future and let several coats dry and build up. Love my old 1965 mustang coupe but it is not in good enough shape to pay 2-3 thousand dollars to a body shop to replace the cowl assembly. Now if it were a 1969 Mach I model I would pay the money and have entire cowl replaced but......my coupe is just a basic six-cylinder model. On the other hand, if I had a cherry 1969 Mach I model I would live in fear of driving it on roads around the Dayton, Ohio area here and having somebody run into me as they have fender benders around here every day seems. So better off with my plain old coupe I guess. Ha. Ha.

My driver cowl is just starting to rust through a drip. Is there anything I can do short of cutting open the vent cover to stabilize it? the car was restored in 03' and is fine body wise other that that cowl. even the passenger cowl is fine.

I have a 68 and I have about a 4 inch rust hole under the dash but the body work is perfect and the part that you can see from the outside into the cowl looks perfect too

@@6ty8stang May I ask where you live? I live in Ohio and rain and winters are brutal on old cars. I though about using a Beef Injector but with POR 15 or a resin to push through the rust hole and create barrier.

why can't somebody put some kind of a mesh on top to filter out the leaveas/needles? why the holes have to be so huge?

They sell aftermarket kits that cover the slats when the car is parked. But most restored Mustangs never see rain and leaves anymore anyways. The damage was done when these cars were in normal use.

If ford had done what chevy did we wouldn’t have this bullshit problem. The 67 Camaro’s cowl comes off with SCREWS!
