Why would you gaff it in the eye and release it ?

Unfortunately a poorly placed gaff shot that went unnoticed until reviewing video….adrenaline etc….Intention was to keep one fish (only allowed one per person per day) and with what was believed to be a much bigger fish to still fight call was made to release. Have since found out you can buy very large lip grabbers for catch and release and will be using these going forward.
