I started my zoysia yard in nc 20 years ago from plugs. It's like walking on carpet. You can always remove plugs from thick areas to put in the bare spots .

I would never put roundup on my grass lol. There are better ways to kill weeds. Plenty of weed killer are grass safe

Keep it up! I’ve seeded my front lawn with Zoysia early summer. It has been nothing but a heartbreaking experience. You see, I have full sun BUT currently are fighting with heavy weed that is shading out the newly germinated grasses. So even after 3 month after the seeding, the grasses are slow to grow and only were able to mow once. It is too tempting to use herbicides but I am afraid that it will stress out the baby grasses. I hope things would be better next year! If you have update, let us know!

I started my zoysia from plugs. Keep the bare soil areas loose. Zoysia doesn't do well if the soil is compacted. The areas that are thick remove plug and put in bare spots . Just suggestion. I have had my zoysia yard in nc for 20 years.

compaction isn't really an issue in my yard because of the sandy nature of it. I did pull plugs when I built the patio, and put few of them on the hill.

Once you till, you are back to square one. So no need to use roundup until AFTER you till, and then let all of the exposed seedbank to germinate and grow out a bit. Then hit it. You could allow seeds to germinate again even. Then sow your grass seed.

I've enjoyed following your journey. I'm pretty-much in the same boat with my front yard. If I could make a suggestion: on your fence line with the trees, why not just landscape a line out until the grass has a great sun exposure, and bed the trees out to that line with beauty bark. That will greatly decrease the effort - the uphill battle - in that area.

that may have to happen, but it will be my final option lol.

Would love to talk Zoysia sometime with you. Been working my yard for the last 2 years with it down in Beaufort, SC. Black Kow was the missing link for me at 5 bags per 1k sqft. I’m going to overseed my bare spots with zenith next year since I’ve spent an entire season preparing the dirt.

It did the same thing in Indiana as well Only I used Plugs those. Now my wife and I are planing on moving again and my plans will have to go to my next house which am not complaining (ok maybe a little) But Least I can pull up the fourth lawn because I didn't get that far into it.

It looks like it coming along decent. But I think St Augustine would have done much better in your yard with all that shade. Keep working at though.
@Lordofjunk
@Lordofjunk 3 жыл бұрын
st Augustine would have definitely done better in the shade. but st Augustine is not very traffic tolerant. I went with zoysia because of all the high traffic kid activities.

I checked out the Xsoil website and saw it wasn't available. There is a (better) substitute that can be used. It's called Humichar, made by Andersons. It's 50/50 biochar and humic acid in pelletized, dispersible granule form. I think Andersons owns the patent. It's about $84 for a 40 pound bag so it sure ain't cheap, but it will remain in and continue to help the soil forever. I like the fact you do things on a workin' man's budget and I enjoy your videos as well. Keep it up, especially the comical parts. Plus, when someone sends a comment, that get to talk to the Lord!

@Lordofjunk 3 жыл бұрын
thanks for the kind words. I have seen the humichar product, and you're right, its pricey! I need to check out the mirimichi green products. they have a similar product to xsoil. I haven't checked on the price though.

Great video brother! First time watching and definitely following. Question what other Zoysia cultivar would you do in the shaded areas?
@Lordofjunk
@Lordofjunk 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't decided, I'm currently filming/editing a video about tree trimming and getting more sunlight. I reseeded the areas that were shady. if that doesn't work I'm going to experiment with either el toro or crowne zoysia. both of those cultivars have a similar texture to zenith, but are supposedly more shade tolerant. I have read that diamond zoysia is the king of shade amongst the zoysias but its texture is much finer than my already established zenith. standby for more videos!

Where are you located? I was wondering since you planted in July.

wilmington/carolina beach, NC. as far southeast in NC as you can get. I put the seed down later than I would liked to last year because I was installing irrigation.

Your videos are very helpful. My plan is to seed front lawn in September before winter and to seed again ( with peat moss on top) in spring. What do you think? I live in Oklahoma and our weather is crazy.
@Lordofjunk
@Lordofjunk 2 жыл бұрын
if you seed zoysia, you need to do it in early summer. if you seed a cool season grass like I have in my front lawn,, then yes, do that in September. my would guess our summertime temperatures are not that far apart. your winters are definitely colder. if you decide to plant cool season grass in fall, I would try to get coverage as much as possible in the fall. spring seedings are rarely successful. only seeding I would recommend in spring would be spot seeding if you have bare spots.

@@Lordofjunk I couldn’t find zoysia seeds so I’m using Black Beauty brand. Fescue , Kentucky blue. Doing it September, and will see what happens in Spring. Thanks for the advice
