PBS in the states loved British television, especially in the 70s and 80s, filled to the brim with BBC and ITV sitcoms and dramas. Americans loved British television, lap it up, and PBS provided it all for free and best still - without commercials, as PBS was and is a non-profit educational network.

As for the Annan committee report of 1977, it recommended the setting up of Channel 4 and S4C, both transmitter networks and regulation are the responsibility of the IBA and funded via advertising revenue from the ITV companies; no advertising during children's programming and no canned laughter in comedy and light entertainment programming.

I completely stopped watching telly last August which is why I now use KZbin where I can be more selective. Why go telly cold turkey? Hidden and sometimes open agendas both social and political. Vacuous content. Twisted morals being normalised. Lots of reasons but it's a hard habit to kick. When I visit my parents I notice that they have the box on. Usually soaps. All I detect radiating out from their telly is tension, anger, raised voices, weirdness, screams, aggression and a whole bunch of negativity. Why would I want that in my living room? I guess David Attenborough still makes good documentaries and that other quality programmes do still exist but for the bulk of it you can keep it.

Veritas Vincit same here! Just had enough of the constant political agendas or never ending soaps or reality TV. Utter drivel. Sad really, perhaps I was naive but I used to have some trust in the impartiality of broadcasts, and documentaries and nature programmes were invariably educational and utterly absorbing. No longer the case.

I stopped in late 2010 after our roof aerial snapped in two in gale force winds. Not missed a single second of that wretched propaganda I was subjected to for years. They're forever trying to normalise depravity and subvertive behaviour and thinking, along with an firm anti-England / English sentiment and instead they promote a pro-EU one, and I am not buying into their lies one bit. So many other issues and agendas that they push, and none of it is for the good of society, only for those with a vested interest and also the ones that own and control everything the JQ.

Glad it's not just me, I thought I'd never be able to do without TV. I've seen TV change from 3 channels 16 hours a day, to hundreds of channels with absolute trash, now I honestly don't know when I last looked at TV, I mean I read about some crap called "Love Island" and I am glad I don't watch it. Clive James! I remember him having his own funny TV show in the 80s, I wonder if he's still with us 🤔

Television in Britain in 1977 was very limited compared to the states. Britain had just two full time stations of BBC 1 and ITV, with BBC 2 nearly evenings only station. In 1977 America, we had NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS all running non stop, usually from 6am until 1am, with some independent stations too. Vast choice, but quality was crap as Clive James said.
