The history behind the tubular steel cantilever chair is indeed a big mess, almost impossible to fully comprehend. (We discussed this in a KZbin video some months ago if you’re interested in knowing more about it. Follow the link in the bio and scroll through our history.) A chair prototype without back legs was possibly made by the Cologne metalworker Gerhard Stüttgen as early as 1923, but no pictures or contemporary records exist of this chair, and it was certainly never intended to be put into production. What is more certain is that Tatra started using cantilever chairs in their cars in the mid-1920s. Consequently, the idea of a cantilever chair was already in the air when Mart Stam, Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich, and Marcel Breuer designed their versions with varying quality and success. According to us, it’s not that interesting to determine who was first since cantilever chairs existed well before Stam and Breuer succeeded in their experiments.
