Of course it isn't an obligation to change one's sound. They do it to address their paramount over the individual, while claiming their enterprise is only to supplicate the artist. They really might alter the sound to make the artist more mainstream friendly, but their real incentive is to assure their authority. Ultimately, an artist sound changes the moment they start working with a producer.

IMO opinion every 80's metal song sounds the same. I can easily see how this is different. Maybe not vocally, but their instrumentals are phenomenal. PS: Songs about addiction are far more original than the countless love songs of the 80's ;)
